Rajon Rondo on How to Slow Down "The Joker"

Спорт

Rajon Rondo sits down with Matt Barnes & Stephen Jackson on All The Smoke Podcast & gives insight/advice on how he would slow down 2X MVP Nikola "The Joker" Jokic if he was an NBA coach. He speaks on how the Minnesota Timberwolves probably have the best duo ( Karl Anthony-Towns & Rudy Gobert ) of bigs to slow him down.

the problem is there aren't enough offense minded bigs in the league to where he doesn't have to do much on defense ......u gotta beat him up when your on offense..... thats why it woulda been hard for him to try and check shaq, olajuwon, ewing, Robinson and all of them back in the day. there's only about 3 centers to worry about nowadays

Yeah but it starts with having someone who can decently single cover him. He won't pass as much if you can guard him 1 on 1. That said, JJ Redick was talking about it on his podcast and the Nuggets are a team that really doesn't want to shoot a lot of 3s. They're efficient but they're like bottom five in the league in attempts. I think he said they're like 2-4 when they attempt a high amount (can't remember the number of attempts) from 3. So I think the strategy is to just trap him every time and hope the Nuggets miss - especially in a 7 game series. The team is bound to go cold from behind the arc at times.

The Lakers in the Bubble beat a 2 time all star Jokic, not a 2 time MVP Jokic. And the reason why that version of Jokic struggled was because refs were calling ticky tac falls on him that limited his time on the floor. Jokic was a 20 PPG scorer in 2020 and had not mastered the playmaking game. He can average 30 ppg in his sleep from 2022-23. And even 10 assists. That's the main difference. In 2020 the Lakers had to scout for a 20 pts, 10 reb, 7 assisy guy ( similar to Sabonis now or a bit less dominant due to lower conditioning). It is like scouting for Steph Curry in 2013 (pre mvps and superstardom) and in 2017, two worlds apart or Kawhi Leonard in 2014 Vs his prime.

They say T-Wolves have the best chance currently, yet they were 1 missed free throw away from being swept last year. That bubble Lakers team gets way too much credit for beating Jokic. That was only the second trip to the playoffs for this Nuggets core, and they were coming off 2 series that were 7 game wars with historic back-to-back 3-1 comebacks yet had only 1 days rest before having to face the Lakers right away(NBA had a rushed schedule because they wanted to finish before the Olympics started, which ended up being cancelled anyway). The Lakers were full of old and injury prone players that likely wouldn't all be healthy after a full season during a regular year, but they got 4 months of rest and recovery that they normally wouldn't have. Even then, they needed Dwight and Javale to act as goons whose sole job was to double Jokic the entire time and get as physical as they wanted, plus AD and Lebron still constantly stepped in to triple team as much as possible.

That 2020 Lakers squad was highkey a superteam smh. You got AD, Lebron, Dwight, Rondo, and KCP. With a stacked bench with Caruso, McGee, Kuzma, and Danny Green. They even have guys like Morris, Waiters, and Bradley who they didn’t really need to use that much. Their team didn’t have any weaknesses in all 5 positions. Guard rotations: Rondo, KCP, Caruso, Green, Bradley, and Waiters. Forwards: Lebron, Kuzma, and Morris (With an occasional Talen Horton Tucker but he was young) Centers: AD, Dwight, and McGee

One of the absolute worst decisions the lakers ever made was completely blowing up the team right after they won a championship, especially under those conditions in 2020. I would never understand it till this day. I understand a few tweaks here and there with one or two players, but a complete blow up was just plain dumb, made no sense, and oh my God don’t even let me get started with that idiotic team assemble of 2021… that’s a memory I want to permanently forget. McGee and Dwight helped that team tremendously at the center, now they’ve been riding AD hard ever since even though he is not a true center and not built for it. Yes AD is now more of a consistent force on defense the last couple seasons, but at what cost? He clearly needs help and ever since 2020, he has never gotten the kind of help he needs on 5 so he can play more 4, even though he has been so vocal about it. I was actually surprised that he re-signed with the lakers, I know the money was a factor, and he probably there for Bron as well. It’s just ridiculous the decisions the Lakers have made in the past few years.
