Growing up in India, at the end of each school year my Dad would help us tear out all the unused pages at the end of our notebooks. He would then take those to a book binder and get the pages bound to make a new notebook that we would use to practice math during summer vacation. This brought back lovely memories.

Hi Rajiv! Love your videos! As a professional hand bookbinder I give you kudos for doing this video and enlightening folks out there about bookbinding. I would like to make mention of the purpose of mull. Mull is the thing that makes a book structurally sound by actually attaching the text block to the boards, thus creating the strong hinge. Make sure to extend the mull beyond the spine on both sides by about 3/4" -1" so that the mull, hidden beneath the endpapers (and your marbling is gorgeous) will firmly attach to the boards and give you a hinge that will last for many decades of use without ripping. Thank you again for your terrific videos!

I love your teaching style. I’ve been interested in bookbinding for so long, this was fabulous. Watching you read your own book was very motivating. I also love how you say “let’s think about this”, and “what happens when I use three pages or four” That kind of talk helps me ask deeper questions about why I’m using the media in the way I’m using it, and helps me frame questions in my own mind that I can then research further. Thank you!

I am from India. I am 90's kid. While growing up, at the end of academic year, after we got the results, we would tear all the unused pages of the books and keep them ready for binding. My dad knew binding. He would bind all these pages together in to a nice book. He used to even make the gum out or rice. He taught me how to do this. When I grew up to teenage, I used to do this on my own. Later when I was doing engineering, we had to submit engineering drawing sheets for correction at the end of the semester. Many students used to take the sheets to a binder to get it in to book format and submit it. I on other hand, did the binding on my own sitting in my hostel room one day before the submission. Many of my friends were amazed and actually asked me to bind their sheets as well. I ended up doing more than 10 books over a night. This brought back so many memories.

2 tips for making it easier to properly align & make holes: when I was taught book binding, to mark/make the holes, we would clamp the signatures (just as you would when you're glueing) so it has no chance to get wonky. And then we used a small saw to make a very undeep straight cut accross all the signatures. This has the advantage of creating a line + creating the hole (or if less expertly done, at least making the paper in that spot thin enough you can more easily poke through it with the needle or awl). Additionally, 2 layers are not really enough if you want to make a solid book, especially with thick signatures like that. Ideally, you would make enough passes so the dried layers of glue are a couple millimeters thick. The correct type of glue for bookbinding is flexible and will give a little, rather than crack. Remember, it is made to build up a spine so it can take a lot. EDIT: I realised that the thing with using the saw can be a bit tricky to execute, so use it with caution (and a very thin blade). An x-acto knife might also work but I haven't tried that.

Another thing with sawing the holes is that the paper that is pushed through comes out on the wrong side. Ideally you want to punch the needle from the inside out (contrary to the way Rajiv does in the video) so that the extra “pulp” gets glued down to the spine and so that glue doesn’t seep into the pages. This will not be a problem if you are just making a little book for yourself but in order to make a book that will last for hundreds of years this is the way you should do it:)

@@rileystewart2269 I don't know what brands are available where you are of course, but I've always used the synthetic ones from my local art shop and those were just fine. They are mostly PVA-based, white glues (eg. the brand Collall). There's another synthetic one called Planatol that I've seen around a lot, which should be similar (though not PVA-based I think). The main thing to keep in mind is that it should be Ph-neutral/acid-free, if you're dealing with paper.

I seriously love this guy! I honestly believe he can talk about absolutely anything and it will be intriguing. He does such a fabulous job explaining..super thorough. Also, INSANELY talented, so inspiring, etc..etc..etc..! I agree with many on here that he needs his own show. I'll surely be watching.

Are you serious? As someone who does bookbinding, l was expecting a beginner’s guide to stick to something rather more basic before going on to more complex work in subsequent videos. But you obviously recognized that most people who want to learn bookbinding aren’t really interested in, or have a use for, most of those simpler projects. Your explanation and demonstration of the process is first class, and your teaching style is both engaging and humorous. What an absolutely lovely, gifted and talented man. A beautiful soul.
A spellbinding bookbinding episode here Rajiv. You are a dying breed. Gen Z are mainly into tech. You only have to look at today's architecture, housing, furniture, clothing etc, to see that the 'knock it up, get it out, mass production without frills & built-in obsolescence' philosophy is the way to go. Those days of master craftsmen dedicating their whole lives to building a cathedral are long gone.

Excellent, excellent instruction!!! You explain things in such a clear and precise way, with a pleasant voice. Thank you for sharing your talents and skills. Looking forward to more.
Rajiv, I am a vintage woman who has recently discovered your channel and is enjoying it greatly. What is the appeal and satisfaction of your programs? You are like Mr. Rogers for grownups. Thank you. And may every day be a beautiful day in your neighborhood. ❤
Rajiv you really inspire THIS artist and DIY maker with such upscale artsy ideas that you make accessible for people to make. Now that’s a legacy to be proud of!
My grandfather was a bookbinder in Israel! Thank you, now I know what he was doing! ❤️
It's been a rough weekend. This video was like a balm for my soul. Soothing, comforting and inspiring. Felt like I was hanging out with a friend. I can't wait to introduce this to my crafting kit. Thank you Rajiv, you are a gem :)
I didn’t expect I would enjoy 40 minutes of bookbinding ❤
Gorgeous sewing box, good tutorial, love love love Agnes ..sometimes. Tfs
Someone please give this man his own channel and a studio to work! Love his videos. 😍❤️
Yup…he needs his own show. C’mon HGTV…is anybody listening??? He needs his own empire He’s the Real Deal!
I have recently getting back into buying books rather than buying a digital copy. For me its the whole tactile aspect that I enjoy. Like yourself its enjoyable seeing what is yet to discover. Having bought quite a few art based books being able to see the images out on a page than through the screen feelings far more personal. Like when you curl up with a book in bed.
Watching this video was an absolute treat. Rajiv is so endearing! I found his personality so refreshing and relaxing. Love, love, love!
