I heard my Mother and Grand Mother talk about the grade raising. They said it was horrible while it was going on. Stink,, mud and mosquitoes were definitely bad. With the 1915 storm, my Grand Father paid the last note on their home and that night, it was blown away due the Hurricane. They had to start all over once again.

I can’t believe how much work they put into this just to live here -

My great grandmother Matthews was born on the island in 1876.

I thought it was 17 feet. Also it was over 12000 deaths estimated, and not one penny of federal money went into the entire project.

Walter Shattenkirk answered that for me about a year ago. He wrote, "The video is 5:32 in duration."

The reason only 8 lives were lost in 1915 because people left Galveston. They still had fresh memories of the 1900 storm.
