Raising feeder pigs on deep bedding
We are trying things out a little differently, we're taking our feeder pigs from pasture to a open barn with deep bedding in hopes to improve the operation in a positive way by applying forages to the bedding material to incourage rooting and aeration of the litter which will turn into a very usable nutrient that we can apply to our fields and gardens. The spacious barn will allow plenty of room for the pigs to root and move around while providing a shaded roof protecting them from the elements.

he talks a lot and shows little. nobody wants to see a talking head 10 minutes out of 20 mins video. that's why people don't subscribe.
Maybe have operable vents high and low, a rolling tarp at the big opening to help moderate temperatures during the changing seasons? Combining with pasture time could work well. Great video.
Check out our new video, cleaning the pig barn for more on raising pigs on deep bedding!
mustache good

We are working on getting some feeders to raise in a small covered barn to see how it goes and if it’s something that we want to do to expand our operation. Thanks for the info.
Did you get any heat from the bedding

You will definitely get heat off the litter. I think more so with cattle because you'll have more compaction and less aeration but even with the pigs it produces a warmer temperature then the air temp
How many pigs do you recommend for one square feet of this system
@afarmlife

Ideally you would want at least one pig per 13 sq.ft most of the time in this barn we were closer to 30sq.ft per pig
concrete floor in there?

No it's a dirt floor, concrete would be easier to clean but it holds all the moisture and is a mess to deal with. The dirt allows urine to be drained
Just came across your channel, so new sub. Gonna follow along through your vids to get up to date on stuff. Very interested in how this goes. Gonna be moving onto a one acre property we just got and was thinking about doing 2 or 3 pigs in deep bedding on one corner of it. Just enough to help feed the family and maybe extended family or close friends. Will come over and sub with the channel that we started for when we get everything going over there. @oneacrehomestead Keep up the great work 👍
