Thank you for posting the follow up. That is wonderful to hear. So that means her children are grown adults now. I had seen another program of a husband and wife, I believe the mum was Blind & Deaf but I think the das was blind living in the UK as well. Julia's story (life) is no where near how this family was/is. They were chain smokers and the eldest daughter was actually filling the role of mum & dad. It was an extremely sad situation to the point she wanted to end her life and she was barely a teen if that. The parents said they would just keep having kids and no one could say different. Difference is Julia was/ is determined to be the best for Ayla and she was!

I don’t believe Julia hates social services, she just wants the chance to do things on her own just like the rest of us. I think she is a very positive, hardworking, good mom!

yes but I also understand that the social workers have the need to look after them, because we cannot really know how it is to be deaf and blind and we do not have the other senses oversensitiv such as deaf and blind people do have it

I work in disability support and this situation wouldn't be the same nowadays. Julia's "attitude" is in my humble opinion completely reasonable and she is very articulate and patient. She's got super positive energy which is actually amazing given that she seems to have been alone in her struggles for so long and keeps being made to prove herself. Today, she would receive support on her terms. People who she interviews and trains would either be hired through an agency or by her without the middle man, and be paid through funding for disability support. Listening to the social worker and the staff in those early days try and figure out what the problem is is with the benefit of hindsight kind of silly. Julia knew all along how the support should have been and I'm just sorry she didn't get it at first because it's tough for anyone being a young mum and she had all of these extra troubles trying to get proper supports in place which took precious energy away from the beautiful and massive responsibility of caring for her sweet girl. But she did it!

And at that age as well! I have tremendous respect. Not for being a friend... Julia seems to be a great friend to have and you can count yourself lucky to be her friend. The respect I have for Lisa is much more directed towards the fact that she decided to go into that line of work. As I've previously mentioned - especially at that young age. It's amazing that she decided to learn this specific language. She is a hero for that!

She is a paid assistant however, they built a friendship and a bond with one another, so their relationship went beyond a working relationship.

Julia's best friend/helper is an amazing person. It's so great that Julia has help that she chooses and isnt just assigned people she doesnt trust

For anyone wondering: This little girl turned out just fine and is now an adult. Only saw some pictures bur she also had one with both of her parents so I am sure I found the right person. Disabled parents can be wonderful or horrible parents just like any able bodied parent can be.

@@amandapanda7878 the reason she is being referenced is the way that Julia communicated and the woman communicated with her with the hand movements was created by a teacher who met decided Helen Keller was not brain damaged like everyone thought. She simply didn’t have a way to see or hear so she found a way to reach her and teach her how to communicate. That’s the method of communication this woman is using here and people are referencing that without the teacher and Helen Keller both being strong and stubborn and not giving up people like Julia would never have had a way to communicate with or understand the world around them. They were prior to that placed in homes and left in the silence and darkness and barely cared for. So nobody was mentioning her over the part of being a mom or not but without her and her teacher, people like Julia could have never been mothers. She wouldn’t have been given a chance and wouldn’t have made it to adulthood without the method of communication she was using having been invented. If she had made it to puberty they would have sterilized her or had someone like her gotten pregnant they would have forced abortion on her or just taken the baby away without her ever knowing what was going on. Without a way to understand what was happening to her because there wouldn’t have been a way for her to be told or understand what was happening.

yeah but it was even worse for Helen Keller bcuz sshe was born that way. Julia went deaf at 20 YO and blind at 4. So she was already taught the world thru her ears. Which makes it much easier to learn the hand sign language. Not saying it's easy by any means. She is a true inspiration. I'm just saying the fact that that woman was able to teach Helen Keller anything is a miracle in itself.

I empathize with the social workers and caretakers...you are angels! Gratitude is not always given when it should. In this field, if your paycheck is all the gratitude you'll ever receive...DO IT ANYWAY! God sees your heart even if no one else does!

ableism + the tough exterior she had to built to protect herself from it + all the ableism social services agents was her problem. Julia was clearly capable from the beginning + had to fight doubters + prove herself twice over every step of the way. she needed help but she should’ve been able to direct + determine what that help was + how it was received. she should’ve been treated + respected + listened to as if she knew her own life + her own needs better than anyone else ever could. it wasn’t until they figured that out that things got smoother. thank god we do things better now. even though the ableism is still just as bad + ever present. especially in the minds of abled spectators who think they know better than the disabled person when it comes to identifying their “problems” + what they need. 🙄

Julia was ALWAYS determined to take care of baby ! Even with here multiple disabilities, she never backdown. Because she knew if she gave social services a step they would have taken a mile and her baby away from her. This story is truly inspiring.

It is amazing the way Ayla adapts and feels instinctively she has to communicate with her mom in a different way as with others.

As a blind mother of three in the United States, I understand why Julia was apprehensive and abrasive with social services. They just assumed because she was a person with a disability that she had to have around the clock help. She’s a beautiful, wonderful mother and I hope for, the best for her and her family.

She is not only blind but also deaf. Maybe not her, but her baby will need help of someone else all the time.

I think Juliea is doing fantastic. I work with people with disabilites and I support independence all the way. Two 👍👍for this video.

Wow. What a remarkable woman. This is so touching. I am neither deaf nor blind and I struggle with 2 children. I hope she is made aware of these comments and realises how much admiration she has received. This has made a real impact on me. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessings to you Julia and family.

Julia has been better mother than so many who can hear and see but prefare to ignore their children....full marks to her. It would be so nice to have an update about her and her family.

Me, too, LOL. She reminds me of some old people at the assisted living home where my Mother lives. Rude and argumentative and think they can get away with it because they are old.

Julia is truly remarkable. Having a baby is challenging for anyone. Most moms need help and I think she recognizes it, but she was being scrutinized with the expectation of failure. Good for her proving everyone wrong. The way I see it, she needs help mostly having people visit and talk to her so her baby learns how to communicate on a hearing world.

I love and how she explained that there is mums out there that are just got a baby but don't love it. And there is people out there that have a baby and love it so much that they are more protected than just a mother. I would be proud to have you as my daughter. I had my daughter and she was born with a cataract and she is completely blind and deaf in her left ear as well as blind in the left eye due to the cataract. And my family history and genetics wearly in life as I've got glucoma and I'm only 35. This is giving me hope that my daughter could chief of everything being a mum and I am so proud. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely story.

I'm so proud for Julia, I noticed she smiles most of the time. I feel Julia is making a great parent and is doing great with her well behaved baby.

Julia's carer is a very patient and wonderful help to her; I think she should accept all the assistance she is offered.

What if a stranger walked in...Ayla needs someone to show her the things Julia can not . you didn't see the real version of this. At one point the baby was in the cot all day. 😢

First reaction shocked but I think there's a specific reason for it that we wouldn't know - something like she's trying to train her child to leave her hands down so that she (mom) can feel her hands to communicate with her like before each spoonful (a kind of behavioural training for special communication, a way to adapt to her disabilities so that she can properly communicate to her child). And if you think about it, smacking her hands is what sighted parents do to their kids at times too to get a message across.

So happy for her! What a delightful little girl. She was a beautiful baby and is a beautiful child. They are a lovely family. May God bless and protect them.

The main thing would be to find a solution so she can detect when the baby is crying when it is not next to her...nowadays it would probably be a vibrating babyphone (instead of one with a microphone or a light notification)

I felt the feeling of abandonment that Ayla seemed to feel. That light in her eyes were gone when John left. And she looked unkept. But as soon as he came back, those eyes lit back up with assurance. I’m happy John realized that he had to be there for Ayla. And Julia, has become more calmer with him.

Thirty-nine-year-old Julia Kimbell is explaining how she lost her sight quite gradually from the age of two. And how her hearing, which had been slowly deteriorating, disappeared suddenly around the age of 20. She was educated at a boarding school for the blind (“There was no other choice then but to send us away,” she explains), where she gained five O-levels. She learned Braille at school and, for a time, used a radio hearing aid tuned in to the teacher’s microphone. The children are fascinated to hear details of Julia’s life - she is married with three children, loves animals and has a Border collie and eight pet rabbits. But it has its frustrations: she cannot simply put on her coat and get out of the house, particularly after a row with her husband. She would love to be able to take her daughter for a walk on their own.

It seems to me she wants John around because it makes her entire life easier. Even by the end she couldn’t just say I love him. It’s I need him. I hope over there tears she was able to truly love him not just as someone who helps take care of her and the children. I hope she shows and tells him how much she loves him and vise versa.

she communicated to the audience that she loved him in other words. also, “i need” doesn’t just have to mean need physically. people say that all the time + mean they need their partner or loved one emotionally. to me it’s pretty clear she loved him (which doesn’t negate or diminish John’s very valid need to hear that more directly, especially if that’s more in line w| his love language). it’s also clear she hates being seen as vulnerable more than anything else. i mean, this entire documentary is about her resenting her own vulnerability!

Julia needs to thank her lucky stars for social services. It's WHY she can live on her own. $$$ Ayla is doing great because Julia HAS had the help of social services, people to help her, make her dinners, clean her house, help hold, talk to , make visual contact and respond to Ayla. Show some gratitude.

As a mom that has had two C-sections, one that was not emergent after 20 hours of labor and my last being emergent when his placenta started detaching while I was in labor I absolutely cannot not fathom the trauma of going through what she did while being deaf and blind. Her friends crying because there just wasn’t anything they could do to help her in that moment and they probably felt so awful for her was so real.

I knew she would just be an amazing mama! So proud of you Julia!

Oh my word this is one impressive woman. Wow! I'd not have imagined that someone who is both deaf and blind would cope with a child almost alone. Pretty headstrong too. That her child senses her mother's challenges is fascinating to me. Impressive!

Lovely carer, she knows that Julia will resent her a bit. Yeah, it happens. My partner and I are both disabled and we can lash out at each other here and there. We don't mean to, we don't want to, life is just stressful.

@@lvnprntlc also, we both have sleep issues and so when dealing with sleep deprivation, it is a bit impossible to control your emotions. We don't snap at each other constantly, but we also are forgiving when we become cranky. We also talk through any issues we have 😊

"How is a woman who is deaf-blind going to know of all the dangers in the house?" Um. She navigates by feel. She has to keep her home a safe environment for herself. I am pretty sure a deaf-blind person's home is inherently going to be safer than the home of someone sighted and hearing that can shuffle around obstacles easily 😅

@@secretdoll92831 yep, and I noticed later on that as dangers were becoming present, she was very aware of them and trying to figure out what to do.

She is only coping because of her husband. Watched a few documentaries about her, Ayla was left crying for hours waaaay too many times that's why she attached so easily to others when small.

As of 2004 Julia is married and with 3 children. Maybe someone can find a more recent update.

Her speaking is so good because she didn’t lose her hearing completely until she was 20. So up until then she heard so she learned how to speak well like any of us.

Nope. I met quite a few deaf people, they were all completely deaf since they were born. I didn't realize they were deaf until they casually mentioned it about a year later (they thought I already knew, so the topic never came). So no, they don't need 20 years of hearing to learn how to speak. They only need decent teachers and by the age of 3 they'll have completely full conversations like any kid their age. Oh, by the way, they also had a couple of deaf and blind friends since born and they'd also speak perfectly fine.

Her situation is that she has to be an over achiever from the moment she wakes up THANKGOD FOR HER STUBBORNESS

I can't imagine the bond they feel without her hearing and seeing , the bond must be 100 times more, it makes me feel like I can be a 100 times better of a mother

She's is wonderful, many hearing and sighted parents do not put in that much willpower and effort into their children. I would be proud if my mother had advocated for my rights the way Julia advocated for Baby Ayla.

She's a very intelligent woman, of course she knew he would want her to say she loved him. She was throwing up brick walls to protect herself because of being burned by the married man, Ayla's birth father.

I cant figure out why they couldn't have trained the dog or a dog to alert her when the baby (or later child) is crying.

How traumatic! I admire that she has gone on to have a happy family a husband and more children. I doubt after that I would even think of it. She’s an incredibly strong mom and women and wife.

How can she be sitting on the couch, petting her dog, while the baby is crying her eyes out? And claiming she dont need help? That's like, i dont hear het crying, i dont hear her crying, so she isnt crying?

Yes! She doesn’t have to see or hear any pain from the child so she’s not in tune to it at all… I think she’s very entitled and selfish. She smacked that poor child harshly for nothing.

Social services were worried for the baby and Julia failed to understand that. She doesn’t need to be rude to Sandra as she was leaving. She will understand later in life I hope. I wounded why her mom doesn’t want to help her. John walked on her and will leave her again. She makes it difficult for her self and other and mostly her baby. Pray for her🙏

Guess you havent seen the updates, lol? She's been married to this man for over 20 years now and has 2 more children with him.

Ohhhh I am so happy to see she found John! I heard she had 2 boys with John. Ayla should be in her 30s now. Has anyone heard anything about her? She has the most gorgeous eyes!

Oh my goodness!! I wrote that comment only to see he left her. That’s terrible. Shame on him. If he needed her to say I love you, then he should have asked for what he needed. What an immature man! Shame on him for up and leaving her Aylah and his baby. I’m so disappointed in him. Grow up, you made the choice to create a baby so work it out.
