Make sure your totes have a 2 or 5 on the bottom which means they are safe to grow or store foods in. Any other numbers mean the totes are made from chemical recycles that can be absorbed into the soil which will transfer into your food plants and in your produce that you eat. By the way, Your little one is absolutely adorable!

1, 2, 4, and 5 are considered food grade. You want to avoid 3 or any other container without any number at all i.e., Dollar Store buckets and plant pots. My 18-gal Sterilite totes are a 5.

Amen, Sis ❤ I've started mine from store bought bell pepper and mini sweet pepper (seeds). I'm definitely trying the bin raised bed method he's using in this video. Congrats on your balcony vegetable garden! Happy Harvesting, Sis ❤🖤💚💛
Im really glad to see you are involving your children.
You are instilling respect for nature in your adorable little girl. She is a little doll!
A child and dirt and something to dig with. It doesn't get any better than that. 😊 Great video thanks.
That was so precious when the baby said, "ok Daddy." ❣️❣️ Thanks for your great tip!
That was a beautiful moment with your daughter. If you teach her while she is young, you will have a love of gardening together and fresh food all your life.
The minute the baby came in I had to subscribe!
I'm a tote grower and this is AWESOME! Never thought to use the refuse to reduce soil cost. I have native soil as well but I still buy container soil and it is costly. You just saved me a bundle! Brilliant.

When you said “Here in Florida” I had such a relief 😅
Your child is such a good helper - you must be so proud! 😊
I've gardened for many years. With the world in such a crazy state, I'm going to try 4-6 totes of veggies and share with my elderly neighbors next door. I had a dying tree taken down in the front yard before the snows came this past winter. I'm going to use some of those fresh wood chips to partially fill the totes. Last year my dogs ate tomatoes, peppers and strawberries I grew in the yard ! Now the totes can go in the sunny front yard so the harvest will be people food. 😊 Thank .you for your inexpensive ideas. Your little one is adorbs!! Peace to all from Buffalo, NY.

Community gardens would be even more useful than the grassy parks covering sections of a town or city. Maybe those with a lower income can pay less or nothing to rent a square of the community garden. I'm not sure how it works because my own small town lacks one, but I know they exist elsewhere.

@@NormieNeko one of the best ideas I’ve ever come across. Not only low cost, but teach people self sufficiency. Government would not like that though.

Please be kind and feed your dogs proper dog food and stop being so darn cheap! They shouldn't have to live like savages. 😢
I love how your lil baby is involved, this is super meaningful activity for little ones to observe and participate in. 💕
I do use totes but had never thought to reduce the amount of soil. Your method is a big game changer. I make a lot of my own compost and then have to buy some in. This year for whatever reason bags of compost have doubled in price in Ireland and reckoned I would have to reduce the crops I was going to grow. Now I won't have to, many thanks for the tip.
Thank you for the suggestions. And involving the baby...SO adorable!
Yes - I'm using those this year. I've also added kitchen scraps to the mix before adding the potting soil. I have mine on blocks and/or bricks to help raise them up some. It's easier on my back. There are also lots of things that can be done with the lids. Your 'helper' is a real cutie!

@@shallowphatgal Great idea. I need lids for several containers I actually use for storage. Some people throw away containers that lack a lid, so that's another idea--asking around or actually "dumpster diving."

Yes but look for beat up ones at thrift stores . Use your old ugly ones n put that new one inside .😅
Watched it because Baby Kendall is too cute to miss. 🍎🍅🍓
With the composting material, something I learned doing the very same thing, is that some plants do like a deeper depth of soil for their roots. I learned the hard way that plants like pumpkins, watermelon, tomatoes, winter squash and sweet potatoes all like 24+ inches of soil to grow in. I’m in New Mexico and have found tubs a great addition to my garden.
Your daughter made my day. Family is a beautiful thing. You definitely made this look easy. You answered my question, holes on the side. I never thought of mulch in the bottom. Thank you
I’m glad your video popped up. I love this idea. Now I’m not so intimidated of “gardening” because you shown me how to start small. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to more videos.
As of April 2024 Walmart had the totes for $8.50. This is my plan this year for my squash and cucumbers. You have to water and fertilize more often. That was my lesson last year with the 5 gal pails. Children are apprentice adults. Teach them well.
Love your child’s name. Beautiful little soul.
I like this because I want my garden to save me money not make me broke. ✌️ Will have to try this.

I have been clearing my storage unit and plan to use those totes up on old patio chairs for a raised bed garden. Just researching what layers go into it. Starting small (2 totes).
My husband says he wants to do this. Thanks for this video. Your baby is so cute and sweet
What a precious little helper you have!! I live in POLK County Florida and wanted to remind you that mid summer till Fall, it is difficult to find Totes in any stores cause kids are packing up for college, schools and universities. When my daughter was headed to FSU, Tallahassee 3 years ago, we couldn't find a tote in any Walmart...so shop early!! Good luck with your beautiful garden..

Great job. Enjoyed it very much. I love my garden.
Keep up the good work and educating people about growing food. I used to have a half acre truck garden in Missoula, Montana. Now I'm 80, on my own, and have a tiny space at my apartment complex. I live at over 6,000 ft. elevation, in a high mountain valley... where it gets routinely 40 below zero in eight months - long winters, where the ground is frozen solid until May.
Thank you for being so positive and encouraging. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💚💚💚💚
