Just finished reading Little Girl Blue, a biography of Karen. So sad. We lost her way too soon (32 years old). Such a clear, pure, angelic voice and an awesome drummer. They used to call her One-Take Karen because she so often nailed it the first time around. Her brother Richard was on the keyboard/piano and he was composer/producer of their music, too.

It must be a little difficult sometimes for a singer to compliment another singer, but you do it with honesty and grace - your obvious admiration for Karen's singing style and her beautiful, resonant contralto voice is highly appreciated by her legion of fans - yes, she made it all seem so easy, but then masters of their craft always do - thankfully, she never indulged in the excess vocal gymnastics that most modern singers employ - she didn't need to because the gorgeousness of her voice "spoke for itself" and any frills or runs or even too much vibrato would have been a serious distraction from that wonderful voice and the joy of listening to her sing - "Rainy Days and Mondays" IS a great song and it's one of her finest vocal performances. Here are some others where her incomparable voice can be heard at it's best: YESTERDAY ONCE MORE, FOR ALL WE KNOW, YOU'RE THE ONE, A SONG FOR YOU, THIS MASQUERADE, I JUST FALL IN LOVE AGAIN, LEAVE YESTERDAY BEHIND, KISS ME LIKE YOU DID LAST NIGHT, THOSE GOOD OLD DREAMS, I NEED TO BE IN LOVE, LOOK TO YOUR DREAMS, TOUCH ME WHEN WE'RE DANCING, TICKET TO RIDE, (lyric video), A PLACE TO HIDE AWAY, ONE MORE TIME and DESPERADO. For more info on Karen's life read Randy Schmidt's biography "Little Girl Blue". Thanks again for your informed and enthusiastic reactions!

I have heard Karen Carpenter had the deepest singing voice that is within the female vocal range. I consider her to be comparable to Elvis in the sense that she had the greatest of all female singing voices as he had the greatest of all male singing voices. Like others, I was so shocked and sad when she died. I'm sure I had a bit of a crush on her as a boy. I've heard there were people, including her brother, who wanted the act billed as "Karen Carpenter" but she insisted it would stay "The Carpenters" and include him.

And don't forget she did it all WITHOUT autotune. If only autotune sounded as pure and true as Karen Carpenter then modern music would sound 100 times better.

Back in the early to late 70s' The Carpenters owned radio air play. Karens voice was just a magnet! Like The Bee Gees' in the 60s' and mid 70s' for some reason it became NOT COOL to like them, although everyone did! When Karen died everyone was all; Oh it is so sad, she had such an incredible voice, how could this happen... All of a sudden, the "closet Carpenters Fans" emerged. It would have been nice had they been true fans to let a girl who was suffering with internal demons to know she WAS accepted! And appreciated! Just our human nature I guess to be dick heads.

I think you struggled doing this review, Ms. Atkinson. Yes, her song and voice are "nice" but it's way more than that. She had perfect pitch so was never "pitchy". She Owned the lower register, which even she noted was, where the "money" was (!). One of the first Paul Williams (and Roger Nichols) written songs, the beautiful orchestration was from her brother, a musical genius (imho) in his own right, then all the backup singing is the brother and sister overdubbing. Unique in it's time! Quite the song and I remember listening in Awe to this and other Crpntrs tunes, when my girlfriend who say "Hey! Pay a little more attention this way, buddy!" But it was nearly impossible. They were THAT Good !!!
