I really like your setup, with the tent under a large tarp. That gives you more living space during a storm. But ... You're fortunate that there was little or no wind. In parts of the U.S. there are no tall trees to block the wind. So that a setup like you have would not be practical because the tarp would soon collapse in the 30 to 40 m.p.h. wind.
