Not to forget....THE BEST guitar solo EVER! What a climax! Such a DISGRACE this guy stops it! TWICE! Since 1968, "The Man In Black", Mr. Ritchie Blackmore, is THE GREATEST within the hard rock community! Without Ritchie Blackmore, NO Dio, Powell, Bain, Carey, Coverdale, Hughes, Bonnet, Airey, Lynn Turner, Rondinelli or Rosenthal. Just to name a few! I'd say, even NO Bolin. Had Blackmore NOT left Purple in '75, Bolin would've never got the recognition he got.

There is a string section on the track - The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra recorded it, and there's also a string synth on it (something called a Vako Orchestron). Ritchie Blackmore makes this sort of stuff effortless - he also does flamenco influenced stuff later on with the Doogie White era Rainbow from the mid-90s. "Black Masquerade" being a perfect example.

The lyrics, taken literally, are about a wizard who enslaves countless numbers of people and makes them build a stone tower for him. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, as they build the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains") just so they can see him fly, which gives them hope. In the end, the wizard falls off the tower and dies ("no sound as he falls instead of rising. Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand." The lyrics also have a covert meaning, which many people have interpreted as a warning not to believe in false idols or messiahs. It can also mean that one should not give up hope even in harsh circumstances. The song also showcases Ronnie James Dio's soaring vocals and Ritchie Blackmore's guitar work. According to the book Rainbow Rising by Roy Davies, Ritchie Blackmore wrote this song on a cello.

My personal opinion.. all vocalists in the hard rock or metal community should study the techniques of Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickenson, Rob Halford, Freddie Mercury, and for a more modern addition Devin Townsend, Tatiana Shmayluk, and Joe Duplantier. Anything that can be learned from any of those vocalists (among others I am sure) will benefit them in the long run. Oldschool for the solid foundation they provide with the operatic and high-pitch clean vocals, and the newer stuff for the grit and grind of the more extreme vocal spectrum. Just my opinion of course.. yours may vary.

Rainbow was an absolute iconic band with all of its member. And this is an iconic song (at least for me). I love when people get stunned by Dio`s vocals because he was incredible not only of the notes he could hit (we see a lot of great power vocalists nowadays) - but because of his own unique way of delivering it to the listeners - we immediately connect to each sound he produce. I dont know how to call it but i think its something we call Truth. His sings the way its not just power - its true power )

Hear n Aid is a collaboration of all the metal gods getting together to help feed the hungry people in Africa. Dio facilitated it all. The song is We're Stars.

There is a reason the band was called Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow . But have no doubt Dio was a very small guy but had the biggest voice.

Still waiting for an epic STARGAZER movie to be made. There is actually a sequel to this song called "A Light in the Black" that continues the story. Great reaction. Watch the live version. \m/\m/

In the meantime you could watch the film “The Silver Chalice”, part of the plot is that a wizard (Jack Palance) wants to prove that he is greater than Jesus, so he enslaves a large group of people to build him a tower to the sky so he can jump off it and fly…but instead he falls to the ground and dies.

Ronnie explained the lyrics as being about a mystical creature that beings followed until it laid waste to their land. It fled and the beings were left with choice of staying or following.... holds true over the test of time.

The song has been called a "morality tale", and its lyrics are written from the standpoint of a "slave in Egyptian times", according to lyricist Ronnie James Dio. They relate the story of the Wizard, an astronomer who becomes "obsessed with the idea of flying" and enslaves a vast army of people to build him a tower from which he can take off and fly. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, building the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains; /just to see him fly, too many died"). In the end, the wizard climbs to the top of the tower but, instead of flying, falls down and dies: "no sound as he falls instead of rising. / Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand". The next song, "A Light in the Black", continues the story of the people who have lost all purpose after the Wizard's death "until they see the Light in the Dark", according to Dio.

yeh, the singer "ronnie james dio" to me personally had the most amazing voice i have ever ever heard. unfortunately together with the drummer, "cozy powell" they have both died. "rainbow" the band was formed by "richie blackmore" who was the lead guitarist. he was also the lead guitarist with "deep purple". both bands were english & i was lucky enough to grow up with both bands music. i am also english. "ronnie james dio" came from america but his both parents were italian.

Ronnie James Dio gave that 110% always... and after a 2 hours show, he'd go backstage, outside, meet the fans who got to the fences....Lizzy Haile spoke to him about that.. and asked him why he'd. take time to let them take pictures, talk, sign... why do that after a 2 + hour show? He replied that to Lizzy Haile.. and told her : "..You know Lizz.. these folks come here to see you play, they saved their earmnings, to see us live.. to us it is just another town with just another crowd... but for them... This was the day day waited for, saved money for,... We won't remember their faces, Lizz, but they will.. they will talk about this evening 30 years to come, so... let's make it a good memory"
