Great day on the ice with a few meals of smelts don't get much better than that indeed. Well throw in a cook up at the cabin for icing on the cake. Yeah some peoples children, you got that right. Its been some time since ive had smelt. Around here, some people call them schmelt. Not sure why? Maybe a German thing?? We used to take dip nets out for the smelt when they would run. People would stand on bridges and lower the nets into the water and wait a few seconds and pull. Sometimes there would be five, next we would have a net full. Not so much anymore. Most of the creeks are to low for them to come in from lake Michigan. Superior is the place to go. Relaxing video. Collecting your bounty.

Ice Fishing the old fashioned way! Those smelt make awesome baits for tip ups for big pike! Never tried eating them though.. Id love to try ice fishing up there some time for those giant lakers. I get death threats too, I just think it's less Christmas cards I have to send out

Great video , the smelt fishing looked great .Question what is the bear fat like vs regular cooking oil like for frying ? Do you do anything special with the bear fat before you use it ? Thanks for sharing all the best

Just need to render it down. I prefer it far more than anything else including bacon fat. It's got a low melting point, usually staying liquid at room temperature. I have a few videos on it if interested. Thanks for watching and commenting
