Kayak fishing Lake Michigan, July 2024. One small King Salmon and then an unexpected large Rainbow Trout (9LBS 27") tags on during the final stretch of heading in.

Do you ever worry about the temperature of the water on Lake Michigan?

That is probably the best question I have ever been asked on this channel! YES! That is what we should always worry about. I'm a good swimmer, but Lake Michigan is typically pretty cold. Be VERY sure of the weather and your abilities. This is no place to test your skills. Have a plan and a back-up plan here. Practice flipping and re-entry. Bring warm clothes. Cold water (55F) is where the fish are. There are no sharks (or certainly, not many), but frost bite (hypothermia) is VERY real. You are more likely to die of cold than drowning (especially if you have your life jacket on) but floating in cold water is more deadly. You definitely want to worry about the water temperature. I do! My kayak is set up easy to re-enter, my clothes are tight and light, and I have dry clothes with me in the event I should fall in. I stay put in the seat when I'm out here. I only go out in calmer conditions. I am in touch with other boats in the area. Great question! This is fun but BE SAFE!
