Railway Travel across Russian Far East

Фильм және анимация

Numerous travelers desire to travel Trans-Siberian Railway which is considered to be the longest in the world. Indeed, this would be outstanding 7-days long journey across the whole country of Russia. However, Soviets were obsessed with the idea to have an alternative way to Far East to maintain cargo and passenger transportation in case of Chinese invasion and simply to increase cargo turnover. They constructed 4.300 km long railway parallel to Trans-Sib and named it Baikal-Amur Mainline. Needless to say that incredible amount of money was spent and thousands of people were involved into its construction.
I take a passenger train to ride the Eastern section of the Baikal-Amur Mainline from the town of Tynda to the city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Historical remarks follow the footages that I filmed during my Trans-Siberian travel.
Enjoy!

I am an American freight train driver. Love this video! It is very hard to learn about the history of Soviet/Russian railways if one does not speak Russian. I have never been able to find hardly any books on the subject. I had no idea that some of the locomotives used on this line were more powerful than what everyone in the US calls ‘the most powerful locomotives ever built’. Very interesting topic, because of the scale of Soviet/Russian rail network and how much freight was hauled by train, but it is something that most western rail enthusiasts know almost nothing about. Most think there have never been long and heavy trains anywhere else in the world. Thank you.

The most common locomotives in ussr/russia(also they were caught on camera): m62, 2te116( and variations, usually they are famous of "giving a bear" like here kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJloqMx9ZZvgmbQ.html ) , I believe once was caught GT1(gas turbine) if I'm not mistaken and chme3(manuever loco) or it's modern successor which mostly looks the same. Anyway, most of our rail networks utilizes electrocity, so if you're look into soviet freight electric monsters it's a VL-85, VL-15, modern successor is 4es5k. The diesel ones are 4te130 were developed on dawn of Soviet Union, so sadly only one section been saved from decommissioning in the troubled times. And modern one which I previously mentioned GT1

I work for a freight railway in Canada and this reminds me of our own line through Northern Ontario - not just the terrain but the only towns along the way being the crew change points of the railway or maybe those with a paper mill, logging or mining activities. Interesting to see how Canada and Russia share similar geography.

I watched a TV program a while ago where they showed a quebecois going on a holiday in his cabin up north. The interesting thing about this is that he would order the train to stop at his mile marker in the middle of nowhere to get off, and even got his bags unloaded for him. To leave, he would get posted in the same spot and they'd stop for him.

Also the fact that the city of Vladivostok is becoming more famous as the capital of Russia in the east, I started to see more about other cities, younger than the cities in European Russia. The nature and history of the Russian Far East is simply amazing.

What a magnificent video presentation, thank you so very much for this. The architecture throughout the journey is very impressive, even at the smaller settlements. The scenery is exquisite and the civil engineering of the line, the bridges and tunnels are fantastic. I have always been impressed with the design of the locomotives that were used on the train on which you were travelling as with the cabs raked forward at the top they give the appearance of, 'we mean business'! The sound of the wheels going over the rail joints is a sound of great pleasantness and would easily help one sleep during the overnight part of the journey.

Another nice video. I am so sad, that because of the Putin's war and genocide to the Ukraine, i will probably be not able to visit this far east. 😕

Геноцида, который устроила Украина на Донбассе? Закрыли вам локацию для сафари? Жалеете, что Россия начала антиколониальную войну. Понимаю. Но не сочувствую вам.

The line were build by prisoners, for example Russian and Polish people convicted on Gulag . I don't know why this project was the most expensive on Earth. I suppose the money was stolen as everything in Russia.

Only small part of the road. Most of it was built after the 50s by hired workers. Salaries were higher than anywhere in the country.

You "accidentally" forgot to mention that the eastern part of BAM was built by mostly German and Japanese gulag prisoners in the 1940s, and about 200,000 of them died there. I guess it's hard to find anything in Russia that didn't take someone's life.

@@user-jn3cg7jt9tDon't worry. It's not your fault that you are intellectually backward, there are many like you in Russia. Simpletons are easier to control.

@@waldemarmrok167at first, the section of this railway built by prisoners was relatively small. At the second, most of those prisoners were Russian. At the third, German and Japanese prisoners used to work on this railway construction took more lives during their occupation of Russia and China. Most of these prisoners returned alive during the 50s. Especially Japanese.

Right. Especially Germans and of course the Japanese in China. They were lucky to be taken prisoner. Quite a lot of the German POWs were handed over to the Russians by the US army.
