Anytime somebody asks you if you want to work for the railroad I think back to this video.

The same basic skills have been around with the same tools and track structure for well over a century. Railroading is timeless in many respects.

This old video was made for my dad, who wanted to see me at work "doing my job." I don't work on the ground anymore, but I miss those days often. Walking track with your friends, working hard, often enjoying the weather and scenery...it's a good living.

I worked on a track gang for CP a couple years back. While it sucked at the time, I do miss it from time to time. It took me a while to be able to drive down a spike by hand, but once I did, I actually found it quite fun, as weird as it sounds

5 hits not bad. When I was on the CP tie gang a couple years back I could drive in 4 hits on a brand new tie.

A lot of times the machines aren’t as efficient as you’d think. I used to work on a track gang and as a laborer, we would follow behind the equipment and fix the spikes that the spiker machine would mess up. It’s definitely an experience that would make a man out of you and I had my fair share of embarrassing moments and a lot of banter from old heads before I got it down. I don’t work on the gang anymore, I’m a carman now, but there are times I do miss being out on the gang traveling from state to state and made a lot of great friends from that job as well
