    some UK narrow gauge railways used the same coupling system... still do. We hold the link up with an iron rod. No finger loss needed. the knuckle coupler is still a briliant invention.

    @@KennethStone Link and pin - Cheap. Significantly more dangerous. Preferred by the guys handling the money. Knuckle coupler - Expensive. Significantly safer. Disliked by the guys handling the money.

    @@richardmillhousenixon the guys handling the money loved it once they actually had them. The first patent of knuckle couplers could handle a train 4 times the length of the link and pin design.
