Good catch. There's quite a few of those callbacks in these games. My favorite is the one about Johnny Cage. In MK9 Raiden says to Liu Kang "He is a hero, though he does not yet know it." Mk1 Liu Kang says the exact same thing back to Raiden.

What I really love about this new Outworld is the little nods to ancient and medieval civilizations it has in its overall aesthetic. From Ancient China, to the Aztec Empire, and maybe even some hints of European and Native American. It's very pleasing to the eye, while not being loaded with stuff. Edit: Let me just say I appreciate those who corrected me on some of the things I said. Yall are some information banks.

It feels like Liu Kang realized that Shao Kahn's konquest merging realms like Edenia into outworld resulted in such a conceptual knot that he couldn't quite think about how to unravel them. So he tried to make sure that Outworld's all-encompassing mantle over its original components stood as a symbol of unity rather than domination.

It must be weird for Liu Kang to see all of this. He invented and shaped this entire timeline and he's playing along in his own world, like a videogame developer playing his own game and interacting with the NPC's. His interaction with General Shao, whom he remembers as Shao Khan is interesting.

I like what they did with Shao. Instead of being a heartless tyrant like he was in the previous games he’s as fierce as he was in the previous games but he seems to genuinely care for Outworld and doesn’t want his people to feel like they are being enslaved by Earthrealm. I’d respect him if he didn’t approve of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi torturing and killing innocent people though.

@@musiqueaccount2344 and I understand that, but even though villains will always lose the war, a good villain will win a few battles here and there, which is what makes them a good, threatening villain that you can actually take seriously. The problem is that General Shao and his right hand man Reiko literally lose every single battle they fight in the story mode. Compared to someone like Shang Tsung, who not only deceives the Outworlders, but also defeats a few of Titan Shang Tsung’s minions and convinces Sub-Zero to join his side, General Shao has literally no notable achievements to his name that we ever get to see on screen. I know that it’s mentioned that General Shao has accomplished many many things, but the general rule of thumb in storytelling is “show, don’t tell.” *They never showed us why we should fear General Shao.* They never showed us why we should take General Shao seriously. They never showed us how General Shao is a formidable opponent. He was just a jobber for Shang Tsung who did nothing but get his ass handed to him in every scene he showed up in. The closest he ever came to that was successfully wielding Shinnok’s amulet to trap Mileena, Kitana and Tanya, and even then, he got his ass handed to him shortly after by SINDEL of all people, so it wasn’t even a complete success at that. That is what I mean when I say General Shao is a jobber: he does nothing but take orders and get his ass kicked every time he does

@@AdeptKing you’re talking about Shao Kahn. Shao Kahn is a far different story because he actually was a threatening enemy. He survived a punch through the chest from Liu Kang, defeated Onaga, brought Armageddon to Earthrealm and defeated the resisting force, which forced Raiden to reset the whole damn timeline to give Earthrealm a fighting chance, and even then, it took the fucking Elder Gods’ intervention to kill him. Shao Kahn was a genuine threat. Name one notable achievement you’ve *seen* in the story mode so far from General Shao. I’ll wait

Im glad Ike Imari returned to voice Shao in this game. His voice perfectly embodies the character.

I love the new rivalry. Lui Kang enemy has always been Shang Tsung not Shao Khan. Ever since MK9 I always knew the ultimate rivalry was between Raiden and Shao Khan. I'm going to love where this series takes those foes.

I really like how the Mortal Kombat tournament in this timeline is basically a deterrence from war between the realms by showing their strength to the other. Kinda like how in Naruto the Chunin Exams were just a way to show off the strength of their up and coming ninja to other nations to prevent wars.

In the original timeline(Midway era) Shao was a general and advisor to Onaga who was the original emperor in that timeline. Shao in this game is just back in his original role

Given that this has been a peaceful tournament for centuries, I kinda wonder what it was like for past champions. I have the sneaking suspicion that Madame Bo may have been one of Earthrealm's former champions in the tournament decades prior.

Much pros to the designers.....Sindel, Mileena and Kitana are all fine as hell 😍

That was probably the idea. Since Shao Kahn was a warmonger in power in previous timelines, Outworld itself was going to be a ravaged wasteland. He had zero regards to anything that wasn't in the interest of conquest, so no one ever really had an opportunity to establish a culture

Since the ruling dynasty is Edenian, my guess is that they merged and then Edenians somehow took over, likely after Onaga's death if he wasn't deleted from existence by Liu Kang at the dawn of time.
