I think general audience with no or little knowledge of Indian classical muic who usually go by the sound of instruments are more drawn towards the flamboyance that is Zakir Hussain. He makes the drums come alive. People who understand music better are appreciate of the complexity of the Sitar that Ustad Shahid Parvez is producing and the beauty of rhythms that Zakir is complementing. Both artists are at the same level of mastery of their respective instruments and people don't recognize that.

Zakirji, influenced deeply by Pandit Ravi Shankar never liked unruly crowds. Those who have attended his concerts can here him scolding audiences very sharply despite the seniority of the artist whom he was accompanying. His temper in such areas is renowned. Here, both artists are in their late 30''s, meaning that this concert is at least 27-28 years ago. Zakirji is not smiling in his usual way of appreciating Shahidji. Rather, there is some embarrassment in his repeated smile. Audiences must be disciplined and trained, much like children. But hats off to Shahidji for his graciousness. Other artists would have lectured the audience.

Actually Zakir lives for crowds! The gimmicks he does are not classical music. You are right Zakir is influenced by Pandit RS who was the king of showmen in indian music. Swapan Chaudhary, Anindo and Kumar bose are more of serious musicians then Zakir, in this respect.

I disagree. The calculations and upaj that Zakir bhai does is unparalleled. There's a video on KZread where he has played 6.5 beats and improvised in that. I agree that he does a lot of gimmicks. But that is to make the crowd enjoy classical music without knowing the deep technicalities.

Narayan Bhavaria sir do you even know the level of complexity and vastness of repertoire with which he plays? He is as serious as it gets and is extremely skilled in his bols and ability to play diverse compositions. Those gimmicks are signs of his humility and desire to make the audience feel connected.

Zakir bhai is a combination of skills and showmanship. I agree that he has played a lot to the gallery, but he single handedly pulled crowds and is commercially the most successful Tabliya the world has ever seen. Even when it comes to accompaniments, he is a gem who can't be compared to anyone. Listen to him with the likes of Amjad Ali Khan, Vilayat Khan or Budhaditya Mukherjee, you will see a different ZH who has a much greater understanding of raagdari and bandishes than most other tabliyas.

  • @nandi4crc

When accompanying others, it is imperative that the Tabalchi allow the lead instrument to dominate. Here Zakir just could not control his impulse for showmanship. He was encouraging the already unruly crowd to pull against Shahid. There is some real delicate rendering by Ustad Shahid here which has been overshadowed by Zakir's childish behaviour.

The tabalia, a legend in his own right, did not follow the cardinal rule that his primary duty was to provide "theka" with occasinal tehais and tukras in collaboration with the artist he was accompanying, His father and guru was a gem of an example as an accompanying tabalia and earned respect and admiration the world over. In late 1940s, at a concert at khazanchi Road, Patna during Dussera, Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa was accompanying Ustad Faiyaz Khan Sa'b. As was his unique style, Khan Sa'b started his alap in the way Dhrupadias do and when it ended and rhythmic singing started in very slow tempo, Thirakwa Sab picking up the "taal" and "laya", started with a "chakradar tehai" which took quite sometime to complete and before the "sam" came. Khan Sa'b had stopped singing and on completion of the "tehai" bowed to the tabla maestro with most polite praises and looking towards the audience said, "Inka jaisa tabla koi bajata nahin. Aap khusnaseeb hain ki ye aapke samne baja rahen hain. Sun lijiye dil bharke." These words made Thirakwa Sa'b extremely apologetic and then the great maestros started again.

The mind reels when one looks at one person's contribution to the Indian Classical Music and Dance. The eight major forms of Indian Classical Dances are performed by thousands of artists. About the same numbers are in the field of instrumental and vocal music. Then there is the Classical Music of the South. To say that it is a rich heritage would be too trite. Then there is the sculpture - and the scripture, too! And the architecture? It is so stupendous that it doesn't fit in the mind. Like the galaxies and stars in the universe! I think it's important to point out that Zakir-ji is not playing much at all, in his entrance. Even he is laughing at them, and after the most short of entrances, he asks Shahid-ji to 'go ahead', like he doesn't want to encourage the audience. People are over reacting on this. He even laughs at the reaction in the first 10 seconds. Clearly, he knows that they are overbearing, but what else can he do? I think he handles it with class, and then sarcastically gives pranam to the hollering from the audience 'baa-ji kya bhat hai'...

I don't know where this was played. It seems the audience is mostly made up of novices who are easily impressed by the flourishes presented by Zakir Hussain. Zakir Hussain has started acknowledging that his early days of playing as accompanyist were all about his own pride and accolade seeking rather than highlighting the lead instrumentalists' improvisations and ability. Ustad SPK is and has been for a while the best sitarist of India. He deserved more respect from Zakir Hussain.

It is good that he kept his cool and continued to produce his dazzling skills with the instrument. Zakir Sahib may be great but when he is accompanying an artist on the table, he should just do that on not try to take over the stage. This is against the accepted norms and culture of Indian music.
