About Artists:
Dr. Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande:
Ashwini Tai belongs to the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana tradition.
Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande was born in Mumbai on 7th October, 1960, into a
family of music connoisseurs and musicians. She completed her Sangeet
Visharad from the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Being a
scholar, Ashwinitai also obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from the reputed
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.
Ashwinitai‘s journey into classical music began under the tutelage of
Narayanrao Datar, who belonged to the Paluskar branch of the Gwalior
gharana. Later, her disciplined taleem under her mother, Manik Bhide
(who herself was trained under the legendary Kishori Amonkar) was
largely made up of learning the traditional aspects of the
Jaipur-Atrauli style of raga development and also studying the nuances
of raga-music. She then went on to train under Ratnakar Pai, a renowned
teacher of the gharana, from whom she received further guidance and a
great repertoire of the traditional paramparik compositions and ragas.
Because of her influences from the Jaipur-Atrauli, Mewati and Patiala
gharanas, she has created her own musical style. She holds a strong
command over the three primary saptaks.

    (1) Mano jara itna kaha (Please listen to me a bit) Tum bin kala na pare nisdin maiko mohan(Without you, I don't get relief day and night, Mohan) Mori binati mano kanhai (Please keep my request, Kanha) Biraha dukh ati kathin (The pain of seperation is very hard) Naba joban naba madan , kaise chatur karu sahan (New youth, new sensual desires- how can I bear them, O clever one?) ["Chatur" meaning clever is the pen name of Pandit Vishnunarayan Bhatkhande ] Itni mori mano mohan (Please listen to me a bit) Kahe karo mose judai (Why do you get seperate from me?) (2) Payal bajan lagi re ( My anklets have started ringing) Kaise kar au tumhre pas (How will I come to you?) Saas nanad mori janam ki bairan (My mother-in-law and sister-in-law are my eternal enemies) Sabarang piya hu tori das ( O all colorful, I'm your servant) [Sabarang which means "all colorful" is the pen name of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. This song talks about a Gopi( Radha) who wants to go to her lover (Krishna), with whom she has an socially illicit extramarital relation. But she can't go because her anklets are ringing and her in-laws will catch her. She considers her in-laws as her enemies coz they are restricting her from going to her true lover. She also expresses her devotion to her lover, Krishna. This theme is a metaphor for the soul (Gopi) trapped in the material world (the marriage), unable to get to its true lover(Krishna/God). ]
