Indonesian Air Force really is doing great with their modernization! You must be so proud of what your country has accomplished! And as far as i know, Indonesia already has the capacity to build its own subs and other navy ships through PT PAL? Last time i recalled, Indonesian Navy was on a shopping spree for Frigates, Corvettes, and other ships produced locally and foreign? How nice! This is quite historical since Indonesia had always purchased jets from either US or Russia. Never France. Due to our military's past (human rights abuses in East Timor/Timor Leste now), it was very hard for us to purchase weapons from western countries. US is a legacy partner since the 60s and Russia, well they don't care what we do with their weapons really. I guess the Indonesian government took advantage of the botched submarine deal between France and Australia. We knew France lost billions so they'd sell whatever to whomever. That said, our previous commander of the armed forces, who just recently stepped down, received his overseas training in France so that might also have something to do with it.

The main reason why we want to make more business with indonesia is the location of indonesia... we want to be more present in that area (and BTW France and the US are the only countries from the west who have territories in the pacific). Also, France knows Indonesia very well because there is a french citizen in Indonesia death row since more than 10 years, Serge Atlaoui, and this guy got removed from the last wave of exectution (he was supposed to be executed with the "baly9" guys)

@@escobar3349 it's not a 4th gen, it's a 4.5 gen more maneuverable than any 5th gen. The coming version of the Rafale, the F4 standard has many features in common with the F35 (so it will be better than most of the 5th gen, and of course the rafale also have a systeme that makes him stealth, not as much as a true 5th gen, but enough to have a very small signature).

No Aussie's sub was Shortfin Barracuda an AIP converted sub from nuclear. Indonesia's is Scorpene an Diesel/AIP sub from the beginning. But you never know down the line the partnership could lead to more capable submarines.

Maybe in fact it is lucky to have good timing to procure new subs and Rafale fighter jets after Aussie ditch the billion-dollar sub deal with France. Also for almost more than 6 years, the Indonesian def ministry tried to order the SU-35. But then it was halted due to US pressure (read: CAATSA Act from Trump administration)

Besides, it takes 250 fighter jets to fulfill the current minimum essential forces for the 30 years to come. Indonesia also needs at least 300 attack helicopters and at least 50 unit medium and long-range air defense systems. Also 20 aircraft personal transports, 20 hercules, 10 mid-air refueling planes, 400 attack helicopters. Includes 50 medium and long-range air defense systems, radar and satellites. The Indonesian navy requires at least an additional 30 heavy frigates, 30 attack submarines, 30 littoral corvettes, 50 coast guard ships and 5 destroyers.

They dared to blown up dozen of Chinese fishing militia, chase down Chinese Survey Vessel and Coast Guard to go out of their territory, even they stationed submarine and fighter jets on natuna Island in case of heated up tension. With the KFX going, it supposed to be like: KFX for the fighter role, F15 for big load strike, Rafale for multirole air support

Indonesia also aim type 214 subs and mogami frigate with kf21 in future. while Indonesia plan to relocate the capital closer to china sea, it must be protected by s400 in the future.

So the rest is up to KF/IF-21 Boramae in 2030 beyond for Indonesia Air Force

Its more like defending our neutrality, just like switzerland neutrality is expensive. You gotta have huge military for countering potential threat from the west and the east. Tho these days we're more leaning to the west, but that doesnt mean we'll join nato if ww3 happens.
