RAF Mildenhall 6/1998

This is video of the old section of RAF Mildenhall that I filmed during an Enroute Support Trip from Charleston AFB, SC in June 1998. Most of the buildings shown were constructed in the 1930's. RAF Mildenhall was not occupied by the USAAF during WW II, but the US was granted use of the base after the war. It sits in East Anglia (where most of the bomber/fighter bases were located during WW II), not very far from Bury St. Edmonds (a B-17 base during the war), RAF Lakenheath, Ely, and Cambridge.

You sound so condensending. I was there in 78 and absolutely loved the base and surrounding area. The people were the greatest, so warm and friendly. I'd love to go back.

Loved the video. Was at RAFM from 68-70 and 79-82. It was wonderful to see the Old Movie Theater (next to the Chow Hall), the Library, base housing, Bob Hope Rec Center, Mickey's Tea Bar, and many other memories. Thanks.

I was stationed there from 2017 to late 2019, its crazy how it looks so similar to 20 years ago. alot of stuff is different but all the buildings look the same for the most part.

Wow ! This brings back memories. I was there 97-99. I was an A1C-SrA for the Aircrew Life Support shop at the time. I'm glad this footage was taken. I was so young and wild at the time living in the dorms. I kick myself in the but for not getting my own footage.

A very interesting video. I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall in the late 1960s, and the EM barracks there and at nearby Feltwell were quite old and uncomfortable to live in. They were essentially unchanged from the 1930s, cold in the damp British winter, with balky steam heat, open-bay accommodations, and shower rooms labeled "Ablutions." Even so, Mildenhall was great because of off-duty sightseeing opportunities. I was there during the Swinging Sixties and the Beatles era in London. On weekends, we'd all pile into the shuttle bus to Shippea Hill train station and take British Rail to Cambridge or London. I see on Wikipedia that Shippea Hill is now "the least-used station in Britain." According to Wikipedia, “On 8 January 2015 the Department of Defense announced that operations at RAF Mildenhall would end and be relocated to Germany (Spangdahlem Air Base) and also within the UK. On 18 January 2016 the British Ministry of Defence announced that the site is to be sold.” A historical footnote: I was told when I arrived at Mildenhall in 1967 that I would have been assigned to Évreux-Fauville Air Base in France instead if DeGaulle had not shut down all USAF bases in that country in 1966-67. Again, according to Wikipedia, “The 513th Troop Carrier Wing arrived at Évreux on 15 April 1966 from Stewart Air Force Base Tennessee to facilitate the removal of USAF assets in France. Its tenure at the base was brief, moving large amounts of supplies and materiel from France to Germany and the United Kingdom. By January 1967 virtually all was complete, and the Wing was transferred to RAF Mildenhall England departing on 26 March when Évreux was returned to the French.”

The same benches are even in front of the bob hope center. The parking lot is gone now by the chow hall though. it's sort of like a park now.

No... not fifties. looks like luxury to me. I was there in the 60's and it isn't the same at all. you'd have thought you had gone back in time if you were there when I was.

I couldn't agree more with your comment Brent. I was part of an RC-135 air reconnaissance crew that tdy'd from Eielson AFB in Alaska. We flew over the pole and skirted the Soviet northern borders and then on to Mildenhall. This was 1971. The VAQ in '71 was basically a room with 12 beds and nothing else. The bathroom latrines were located in a separate building about 50 away. This was problematic especially in winter with the cold and rain. Couldn't wait to get back to Alaska.

I need to add a footnote to my comments above . . . The facilities were very historic in that whenever I was there it almost felt like I was on a WWII movie set during the days of the Eighth US Airforce. Also Mildenhall was a great location to get to Cambridge or London. We would just hope a but to Shippea Hill train station get a train to Cambridge or London.

The building you stayed in is gone. I had the privilege (if you call it that) to stay in it as well back in 2005. They condemned it because toilet drain pipes were leaking into the walls.
