Rado Diastar Original Review

Review of the Rado Diastar Original wristwatch and pairing with a Scotch. Rado is a leader in producing watches using highly technically advanced materials. The Diastar, introduced in 1962, was the first ever watch to be scratch-proof as its case was made from tungsten carbide, an incredibly hard metal. Here's what I love about this watch.

    @@andyl2726 I also have a 7 inch wrist and as I said in the video I think it works well. It is actually one of my smaller watches at 35 mm in diameter. The ladies versions drop down to around 27 mm so they will appear considerably smaller and I think the bracelets are also narrower so your looking at quite a reduced footprint on your wrist. I wouldn't personally go much smaller than 35 mm, but it's up to your personal preference. My wrists are a fairly flat 7 inches so I may have a bit more wrist real estate to play with. Cheers!

    Thanks for posting this wonderful review of the Rado Diastar Original. In 2017, I was lucky enough to have spotted this very same watch (cuff links and all) in a vendor's web store. Needless to say I snatched it up straight away. It was in NOS condition and runs perfectly at between +7.5 and 9.5 s/d. I am happy with the purchase as this watch, just as you described in this video, represents numerous inventions that Rado had introduced into watch engineering, design and production. Firsts like the tungsten carbide case and sapphire crystal applications on a sports watch for that time period were no small feats. It is unfortunate that Rado is not well known in North America. However, I gather that Rado has been quite popular in South Asian countries like India since the '60's!

    Thanks T C! Congrats on the purchase and I'm glad you're so pleased with it. Rado is very under-appreciated in North America, such a shame as I think they have quite a lot to offer and at reasonable prices. I've also heard that they are much more popular in Asia. It's interesting how some brands do much better in some markets than in others. It would be cool to see a map of global sales across watch brands, difficult to get that data I guess and also so many watches are moving around on the grey market that it would be difficult to track sales or where the watches end up. Cheers!

    Got an original diver, it's a fantastic watch, not stunning straight away, but it grows on you. So underated as a watch brand. Very classy watches, and I thought the anchor swivel on the automatics acts as a gauge to let you know when it needs a service , because when the oils dry out the anchor doesn't move . I could be wrong but it does makes sense !!!

  • @watchscotch6203

    @watchscotch6203

    Hi Martin! That's an excellent watch! Is it the one with the interior rotating bezel? I've heard that the spinning anchor logo was an indication of service interval as it was mounted on a lubricated ruby so when the oil dried out on it and the anchor stopped rotating you should assume that the oil was also dry inside the movement. I think Rado may have had a patent on this. I believe that this is no longer the case on modern Rados, although they do still have the spinning anchor on all automatic pieces, they are no longer lubricated or meant to be a service indicator. Cheers!

    Certainly when compared with the new offerings from Rado that have the Powermatic 80 hour movement the 40 hours does seem lacking, but when this was released in 2012 there were not many movements available in this price range with longer power reserves. The Powermatic 80, which is an evolution of the ETA 2824-2, was only introduced in 2011 so I think it may have just missed the boat for being included in this piece. I'm not sure which watch the Powermatic first appeared in although I think it was the Tissot Powermatic 80 that came out at Baselworld 2013. Also, as this is an anniversary limited piece I think it is perhaps fitting that it has the older movement, in some ways. Cheers!

    The MSRP was $1250 USD. This is a limited edition so they have become somewhat hard to find. You can still buy similar new models from Rado with a max MSRP of $1750. I guess it just depends how much you want this particular piece and whether you want to wait for another to come on the market. Good question about the indices. I'm not sure what they are made of as this was never stated by Rado in the specs. • @watchscotch6203

    @watchscotch6203

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Yngvar! Great question! Apart from the obvious styling differences (DiaMaster is much more traditional in my opinion) they are made of different materials. Diastar (released in 1962) is a composite material that Rado calls Hardmetal. It's a combination of tungsten carbide (a ceramic) and a metal alloy to give exceptional hardness. The Diamaster (released more recently) is made of high-tech ceramic which is Zirconium Oxide with trace elements added for color. Both materials become incredibly hard, but not as brittle as regular ceramics. They also both take on a metallic hue, but are not really metal. Rado has put a lot of research and development into these materials and the results are super cool and pretty unique in the watch world. Cheers!

    @@yngvar2403 Auto vs quartz is difficult as there are many arguments on both sides. That's why I went with this piece. The scratch resistance is pretty amazing. I've had this one for 4-5 years and have no scratches. @@yngvar2403 You're welcome! There are a lot of very fixed opinions in the watch world, but ultimately you go with whatever makes you happy. I think quartz is great and there are certainly times when it fits the piece better, other times I feel auto works well. I think it depends on the piece, considerations of history, and the intended use. There is of course no doubt that there is a lot of craftsmanship in an auto movement and a certain amount of fascination that results from that, especially in our modern digital world, but it is also true that quartz is an incredible technical achievement and has its own great history. Quartz pieces can also be high-end and I feel that the level of finishing, quality, and perhaps history are the real determinants of luxury.

Often dealers have some room to come down on price especially if it is an older model or not high demand, but it always helps if you have a relationship with them i.e. you're a repeat customer. They will often give a discount for cash purchases vs credit card. They may be inflexible on price, but perhaps can through in an extra strap or something like that. Normally you'd expect that the 2836-2 is only used when a day is also displayed versus the date only 2824-2 version. I'm not sure why Rado would do this other than a lot of their original diastar models have day/dates so they had the movements laying around or because they liked the more snappy date change of the 2836-2 over the smoother 2824-2. Just got offered the 40th Aniversiary Diastar from 2002 (ref. 636.0557.3), in NOS condition for $550 USD. Do you think it's a good deal?
