Radius of Gyration of an Area
This radius of gyration is termed as a square root of ratio of moment of inertia to the cross-sectional area of material. It represents the imaginary distance from the centroid at which the area of cross section is imagined to be focused at a point in order to obtain the same moment of inertia.
A column tends to buckle about the axis for which the radius of gyration and the moment of inertia are minimum.
