I had radiotherapy (IMRT) in 2008 to try to get rid of a recurrent meningioma. I think a lot if people think that because your tumour is benign - it's fine, it doesn't cause any problems... how wrong they are. You still have effects, they can cause blindness, memory loss, loss of language, stroke or even death if untreated. I went through 6 weeks of daily radiotherapy but, sadly, it didn't succeed long term. I've just had my 4th craniotomy to remove 2 tumors and to alleviate brain oedema. I am extremely grateful that I have the best Neurosurgeon one could hope for (Mr Kitchen at the NHNN) over the last 18 years and it's his skills that keep me alive!

My father had a mask made to treat throat cancer that had metastasized to his mouth and brain. Sadly he passed away, but he was allowed to keep his mask following his treatment when it was no longer needed. He sawed the top off and turned it into a Hannibal Lecter costume!

I was treated for brain and spinal tumours at St Barts, Venus, Saturn and Mars. Still got my mask! Love to everyone down in the radiotherapy department, including the awesome reception staff!

My late husband had Glioblastoma and described it as a bit buzzy having radiotherapy, at the end of his last session he came out clutching the purple mask as a souvenir, we still have it 6 years later, if you squint you can see its him. I still remember it being formed exactly as you showed it at the Churchill in Oxford

Thanks to Mr Tower for allowing this video to happen, and his family for allowing to to be uploaded. I’m sorry for their loss but this will ease the anxiety of many. A good friend of was diagnosed with throat cancer 5 years ago, his radiotherapy happened in this exact same way with a similar type of mask. He was told his treatment chances of success were low but today he’s discharged from his regular check ups with no sign of cancer since his treatment stopped. There is hope! Thanks Brainbook, I’m enjoying the more regular content now, I hope it can continue!

I'm was studying for competitive exams and I have see what is radiotherapy now I understood thanks to Mr tower soon I will be a doctor and help people like Mr tower.

When I had radiotherapy 10 years ago, I think it was before this type of plastic mould was invented (or Cambridge hospital didn’t have it) I had a full plaster mould made of my face which was amazing, unless your claustrophobic. Also I they didn’t have a nice skybox to look at so they stuck stickers on the table for me, I was lying face down.

Thanks for another great video... And profound gratitude towards Mr. Tower and his loved ones for sharing this so that others may learn. Sorry for your loss.

I had 5 surgeries of my pituitary gland tumor already. Radio surgery back to 2005 kept this tumor inactive until 2017. But it came back again and I had 2 endoscopy in 2017, 2019 and will have another one next February. 😢😢😢

An interesting thing is that certain elements are better for treatment as they deposit their energy at lower speeds which means you can actually control where to deposit the energy. This results in the beam not destroying everything else on its way. The atom enters the brain at a higher speed, slows down and then decelerates at a higher rate than before. The patient thus gets the dose at the right point.

Great vid. I remember having a mask made when I first went in for radiotherapy, then I had a specialized mask made for SRT (stereotactic radiotherapy), very accurate video. Liked.

@@afsheenimran4c515 brain tumor. A kind of pontine glioma. Pineal ependymoma. I’m lucky to still be here by the way, because my tumor was virtually ln top of (superior) to my brain stem. As the nature of cancer is, however, it's recurrent, so, after I had it resected last time, I had Brachytherapy done as a kind of prophylactic, seeing as I maxed out my traditional radiotherapy dose. Radiotherapy (radiation,) is wildly successful for me, so, I wanted that efficacy to kinda be a prophylactic, and prevent any future recurrence, hopefully.

Its very site-specific. For example, in this case, the patient was being treated for head and neck cancer. In this type of cancer, spread of the disease to the lymph nodes is very important. The injected contrast doesn't highlight the lymph nodes directly, but it makes it very easy to see blood vessels, and thus the doctors can figure out what is and isn't lymph node from there.

Do they mark on the mask to know where the treatment should be given? My father has tumor in colon plus few enlarged lymph nodes, do they mark/target lymph nodes also along with tumor?

Exactly the same procedure what I've gone through I have hydrocephalus and brain tumor (central neurocytoma) I'm only 19 yrs old that time and now I'm 21 yrs old.

Before they used a custom shell and mask, they fasten the patient's head to a stereotactic frame (which necessitate local anesthesia).

For my husband it was a year and a day from diagnosis. I test drove a car and the guy and I were chatting, his wife has GBM and she is still going on 3 years from diagnosis, I bought the car as well

In radiotherapy can you damage the brain by targeting wrong places? or possibly kill someone by targeting it to critical place? Edit: btw if it's a single beam, doesn't it burn its way through the brain?

Yes you can. That is why so much effort is put into precisely targeting the tumour and keeping the patient from moving. I’m sure you could kill someone but I’m hoping no one has ever tried. The radiation forms a tight beam that would damage all brain tissue along its path. If you look in the video during the radiotherapy session you can see that the machine is rotating around the patient. The beam is constantly targeted at the tumour so that it receives the most amount of radiation. It’s not perfect as other brain tissue will be damaged but this way that damage is minimised.

It is almost impossible because there are a team of highly skilled people planning the therapy including (but not all) Oncologists, Radiation Therapists and Medical Physicists. The plan is so precise that it is highly unlikely anything (other than the tumour area) are affected. That is why a mask (for any area of your body that is affected) that is for that patient - it will not fit anyone else - is placed over the area that will be treated and locked onto the table so that the patient cannot move at all during the therapy. Also, radiotherapy is usually sets if beams that are targeting the tumour - not the healthy tissue. E.g. Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) the beams fo through the healthy tissue at a much lower rate and when they reach the tumour they are much higher and a lot of planning takes place for the right amount of radiation is set. I hope that helps.
