Saw an interview about how Thom tried to fit all of this into the album version. He spent a whole day on a single element of the tune and the arrangement was driving him mad. Ed and Jonny sent him out for a walk. Took the track and stripped it back to what we know today. Stripped back guitar, barely any drums, muted piano and electronics. Thom came back from his walk and listened to it, burst into tears and ordered it to never ve touched again. :)

I *_highly_* recommend checking out bands like *Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9), Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Disco Biscuits, Galactic, The String Cheese Incident, Twiddle* and the like (look up any of those bands on *Spotify* and the _”Similar Bands”_ feature will guide you through the rest) if you want to hear some *_serious_* jams :)

As someone who found Radiohead in 06 and had IR be their first new RH album, having only just discovered this version of Videotape... they're both incredible in their own ways. The intricate syncopation and forceful instrumental build of this - is Thom playing chords in a major key? the piano feels more powerful than the sparse, empty production on IR - has more emphasis and goes harder, while the album version is almost an exercise in limited effort and negative space, not needing anything more than it holds inside. I just heard a stripped down live version of Videotape in NYC last weekend, and while I'd love to hear this one come back someday, I see them as equals, both incredible.

I couldn't tell you how many times I've played a Radiohead song on repeat while I was drunk. I hate being sad, too, but this music makes it feel good somehow, doesn't it? yyyyyyyyyYyyYyyYyyyOOOOOO

I think this and the album version are both equally great. The complexity in the simplicity of the album version is just insane if you think about it. That version just has no rythmical reference to what's happening in this version. The upbeat of the piano everytime Thom hits a chord on the album is still there, but there is no reference for him to keep track of the actual beat of the song what so ever on that record. That's just genius in my opinion and it takes an insane amount of skill to perform.

You’re right in roughly everything, it’s a beautiful thing they have going on in the underlying rhythm. That’s why it’s my favourite band, because of the details. They mean everything me. And to many more Ps.: the upbeat is 1/8 note ahead of the piano chords :) that’s why it’s syncopated

Check out their song The Butcher, if you haven’t already. Not as deep of a mind fuck as Videotape but there’s a similar rhythmic illusion going on that they reveal in the second half.

In this version the syncopation is hard to distinguish, the best video to get it is the "At The Basement" performance, the one with Thom alone, you can perfectly hear how he's making a rhythm on a different signature with the piano's pedals, he's definetly not playing on 1 - 2 - 3 - 4.

As much as I adore the final version as a closing song, I would love if they put this version on the anniversary re-release of In Rainbows. It's a lot more powerful and desperate, reminds me a bit of Pyramid Song.
