    Collaborating with what? Lana is commiting a burglary. Must Radiohead help her with her robbery? She must pay royalties and attach Radiohead in credits. This is what everybody does! She don´t want to pay.

  • @bouddicca

    Not totally. Creep has the same 8 first beats that The Air that I Breath, whose real author is Albert Hammond, not The Hollies. When Albert Hammond heard Creep talked to Radiohead and them agree to pay rights and to add Hammond to the credits of the song. They do it since 1994 without complain. All Radiohead music is much better than Creep but I´m asking to myself if Hammond is claiming Lana for his rights right now too. Certainly, the rule is 'you copy, you must pay'. Everybody does it, Lana doesn't want. She things she must not obey the rules. She prefers to steal and does not pay, lol.

    Brian Matthews - ah yeah fair enough. Anyway, Get Free goes into a totally different direction in the chorus. The bit being played here is only the verse and the pre-chorus. The actual chorus doesn't match Creep at all. It's annoying because I love both Radiohead and Lana del Rey

  • @djsoulfilter

    This video literally explained Lana’s 40% offer was absolutely more than enough cause the vibe and tempo of the chorus in Get Free is just completely different, not to mention the part that Radiohead is suing... is actually their less original part since they got sued by The Hollies likewise. A famous KZreadr called fantano has already explained the whole situation in an objective and professional way... I hope people can check that out instead of jumping to conclusions, still opinions are opinions I guess. Let’s just wait for the court’s decision.

  • @baardeven1

    @baardeven1

    6 жыл бұрын

    Fantano is just stating his own opinion on the matter. If people didn't judge everything based on a tweet by Lana or the "objective and professional" OPINION of Anthony Fantano, things would be different. But I guess since we live in the age of tweets and youtube comment sections, that's where we'll do our thorough reasearch. Anyway, read this: pitchfork.com/news/radiohead-havent-sued-lana-del-rey-publishers-say/

    Ku Mingzhi not sure what you mean by part, you mean part of the song? Because Radiohead ripped off The Air That I Breathe for a few seconds in the bridge, while Lanas song steals the intro and verse from Creep. So it’s not the same part at all

  • @lissie3669

    @lissie3669

    6 жыл бұрын

    If you actually listen to The Air that I Breathe, you'll notice that only the bridge and chord prog show similarities, while Get Free copies the whole melody (like omigosh it's undeniably a ripoff). I'm not trying to hate on her as a person, but you would get mad too if the WHOLE melody of one of your favorite artists was ripped.

    I’ve known thoM yorke since we met back in 1991 my mother was friends with his grand parents. in the late 80’ until 2019 we sold the house after my parents passed I grew up in the house the yorke family built in 1944. That song was written with inspiration of the song “the air you breath” not because he wanted to copy the song but for a entirely different unknown reason. Thom told me he had fallen in love with this girl and he wanted to express the feelings for her with out having to be to direct so he wrote creep hoping she would knowing it was inspired by the song “the air you breath”. It was a way to let her know that not only that he felt not good enough for her or that he thought she was special but it was a way to secretly tell her that she was the air he breaths. This statement has been expressed many ways over the years like the song and video “No more surprises” like the name and album artwork for the bends, the song “My Iron Lungs” and so on. It was a secret jester to her. Years later she had taken her life and he had fallen into a deep depression and wrote the album “ok computer” and almost broke up with Radiohead. Thom yorke has had an extremely painful and sad life the one woman he had true feelings for had ended her life she was on life support strapped down to the bed with a tub down her throat and if you watch the song knives out and the video comes out with a girl in a bed like the game operation. Give this guy a break it deeply effected him. I’m sure if Miss Lana Delray knew this she wouldn’t have copied the intro of Creep.

  • @missmiley78

    The original tune of creep chord sequence was the hoffners the air we breathe and then Radiohead used the same chord sequence now Lana Del ray using the chord sequence now its not copyright its just using the same chord sequence for each song its brilliant its sounds amazing

  • @dumi_thicc

    @dumi_thicc

    6 жыл бұрын

    missmiley78 a lot of people seem to think it’s the same chord sequence that all the fuss is over, but it’s the fact that some of the verses and the chorus are almost exactly the same as the melody to Creep. If they were suing over the chord sequence then a whole lot of artists nowadays would be sued by other artists. I don’t want to be rude, I just saw a lot of people commenting the same thing so I thought I might try to clear it up a little.

    Only because the songs have a similar structure, are in the same key and have the same bpm, it does not necessarily mean it is a "rip off". Both songs have a different intention and it is really too much in my opinion to charge 100% of the publishing. Lana says "Get Free" was not inspired by "Creep" and it is probably a coincidence these songs have similar harmonic structures. I mean, there are so many songs in this world that sound similar and a are in the same key, it is not that rare. There is a limited amount of chords which are usually used in such songs, that can just happen. There are vocals of one song that fit perfectly to the instrumental of another song. Lana's suggestion of 40% of the publishing was totally alright, the producers of "Creep" seem to be pretty greedy with the 100%.

    Thank you so much for making it!! After reading quite a bit comments even addressing radiohead being 'nasty', I really wanted to do the comparison myself, but don't know which software to use for transposing! Some of the comments here are so unfair! I think I would agree that the song of Lana was probably not inspired by 'Creep', since the context it brought out is quite different, but it is way much closer than 'creep' is to 'the air i breath'. Apart from the progression of the chords(Well, we all heard about four-chord songs right, plus radiohead had given the credits to the hollies), the first two bars of the melodies from the chorus are exactly the same. If the hollies are the co-songwriters of 'creep', it is totally the right thing to do that radiohead asked for the full percents of the copyright. Plus, take a second thought, this is about money really? I mean, if the 'music industry' tolerates with this, who would ever respect musician?(Ahh,English is not my native tongue, I wish I could be better at articulating!)

The keys would be different and the whole song would have a different structure to the original two.

    Max Islas I think they had to, because The Hollies did end up suing over the use of the same chord progression. Nowadays that’s ridiculous- the amount of songs that have the same/similar chord progressions or instrumentals is a lot, but back then it wasn’t that common I don’t think. So no, Creep wasn’t stolen from The Air That I Breathe, the chord progression was influenced, but not the melody or lyrics. Whereas with Get Free, a few verses and the chorus are almost exactly the same as the Creep melody, which is why Radiohead are suing.

    I am a long standing fan of Radiohead and I quite like Lana, with Creep one of my all time favorite songs. Lana's version is so close to Creep that it is impossible to consider that this is coincidence, but I think that deliberate plagiarism is unlikely as they would have done a better job of hiding the theft. Perhaps accidental, but not my call to make, and imitation is a sincere form of flattery. Cudos to the poster. I thought of overlaying the tracks to see how incredibly close they are to each other and he has saved me the time. Does anyone else think the two together sounds pretty cool anyway?

  • @JoeBrayYouTube
    @JoeBrayYouTube6 жыл бұрын

    Just because they fit together DOES NOT mean it was copied. Have you not seen all the mashups on KZread? You can make anything fit together if it's in the same key with a similar tempo. Lanas song has a different melodie and chord sequence, and for radiohead to say it's a rip of is ridiculous, especially when you realise they got sued for there song. I'm a fan of radiohead but I think they're being petty. Edit: just to clarify I'm not denying there similar, but they're complete different songs not only as soon as the chorus hits but in terms of lyrics. Whilst I see similarities, I really don't think it's ground for 100% of royalties. I believe it's making radiohead seem selfish.

    I understand intellectual property. If you take time to develop something, of course, you should get credit. But art is collaborative even if you don't want it to be. Every pop song follows the same pattern, why? because we decided that pop songs sound nice due to a certain rhythm. And when it comes to this particular case it's ridiculous Radiohead was sued because they "stole" part of the song from another artist, you'd think they would just let it be. I'm sure it wasn't actually Radiohead but someone in their management team, still sucks that Lana is now painted as a theif

  • @GhGh-ci8ld

    @GhGh-ci8ld

    dont look for me yes art is collaborative, every artist is like the brain child of the artists that they listened to and the world they live in. I wouldn’t paint Lana as a thief, but I would still say from a legal standpoint it’s fair to ask for writing credits on a song in which the chord progression and melody are nearly identical. I love Radiohead. But I’ve always liked Lana del Rey’s (Ray?) aesthetic and the way she presented herself. Radiohead has nothing but a similar chord progression. I can name tons of pop songs that have similar or identical chord progressions, but they don’t have the same melody. Not to mention pop music is already known for its lack of originality and “artistic” merit (I like pop music I’m just sayin). And in this particular case, Radiohead willingly gave writing credits to the hollies (or part of them) that wrote TATIB, so I think considering they only had a similar chord progression; it’s way more fair for Radiohead to ask for writing credit as the melody and chord progression are the same.

    "The Air That I Breathe" is a ballad written by Albert Hammond & Mike Hazlewood in 1972. 1) 1972 • It is initially recorded by Albert Hammond and featured on his album "It Never Rains In Southern California", released on 1972-08-16. 2) 1973 • Philip Everly (from Everly Brothers) sings it on his album "Star Spangled Springer", released on 1973-01-31. 3) 1974 • The Hollies cover, RECORDED AFTER HEARING Phil Everly's version, appears on their 14th UK studio album "Hollies" released in 1974. 4) 1974 • The same year, James Last records an instrumental/orchestral version on his 1974 album "Violins In Love". 5) 1975 • Olivia Newton-John performs it on her 1975 album "Have You Never Been Mellow". 6) 1975 • A finnish version "Tahdo en kuin hengittää vain" (adaptation written by Pertti Reponen) is released by Petri Pettersson. 7) 1976 • Another curiosity, "Comme Si" is a french cover (lyrics adapted by Bernard Droguet) sung by duo Shuky & Aviva. 8) 1992 • The 1992 Radiohead song "Creep" uses a similar chord progression and shares some melodic content with the 1972 version of "The Air That I Breathe". Hammond & Hazlewood are given co-writing credits as well as a portion of the royalties. 9) 2017 • "Get Free" is a song by American singer and songwriter Lana Del Rey from her 5th studio album, Lust for Life (2017). Nothing is clear concerning a link with 1992 "Creep" and/or 1972 "The Air That I Breathe"... 🤔 Numerous others artists have covered this song through years. Some people even suggest the song itself is adapted/inspired from older songs making it appearing in the 1930's in the first place ?!... Who knows... All videos are on KZread but I can't put the links here. 🤬 I had to remove them all... Otherwise my comment is deleted immediately. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    The ONLY thing changed here was the tempo. This is not a "mash-up", this is showing how fucking similar these songs are. Sure, you can mash all sorts of songs together, but this follows the EXACT chords, the EXACT phrasing, and EXTREMELY similar inflection in the vocals (which isn't shown here). Whether or not it was on purpose, this song is incredibly similar to "Creep" and I think Radiohead are free to do what they like. Is 100% a bit steep? Perhaps, but that's between Radiohead and Lana Del Rey.

    Most "mash-up" (most of the easy ones) are just based on one similarity: the chord sequences. That's all that THIS video shows. In fact, the songs are in different keys (the Creep music has been pitched up I believe). So this is a "mash-up". And the fact is, a lot of mash-ups are just the chords from one song with the melody from a song that either uses the same chords, or that has notes that happen to fit with the chords taken from the other song. In this case, there are two songs with the same chord sequence. The melodies are... similar-ish. I really feel like people are hearing way more of a similarity than there actually is. They are both sort of basically melodies that hit a lot of obvious notes, and follow a similar shape (along with some very similar parts like "a weirdooo"), but they are no where near identical. Plus, I feel like it's worth thinking about what the point of suits like this really are. The songs are similar, yeah. So what? Get Free doesn't "replace" Creep. There is room for two songs that sound similar.

    If Tom Petty can get author rights on Sam Smith and the Stones on Bittersweet, Radiohead is a shoo in for author rights on this.

    Am I the only one that didn’t think it matched (except the chorus). The lyrics started earlier than the beat did.

    If I start singing Mary Had A Little Lamb a few seconds later than the instrumental than normal, it is still Mary Had a Little Lamb.

    Of course the tempo is going to be slightly different...? The reason why it's a ripoff is because structure of the song in relation the the chord progression is virtually identical to creep ... to the point where slightly changing the tempo of lana's song and adjusting the start time makes the two songs overlap perfectly, (as demonstrated in the video).

    How the fuck are people missing the vocal similarities? If you were to simplify the melodies to their key harmonic points with a schenkerian analysis, they'd be nearly identical. LDR adds a little melisma (and excess syllables), but the tonal path of the melody is the same is creep's.

    I fucking hate theory; I wouldn't call myself devoted in any way. This is just shit that any musician with an ear can tell. The theory just allows one to put that intuitive understanding to technical terms.

    Considering that this is only 37 seconds out of a almost 6 full minutes.She offered them 40% of the song for only 37 seconds ! Damn fools. Shoulda settled it out of the court tastefully like the Hollies. They seem petty as fuck for not striking a deal. Lanas fan base will probably make them regret this decision

    my sound doesn't work on my computer so i listened to the song through my ipod, separately. when its put together, I clearly hear the similarities and am surprised her and her team didn't notice it. I can definitely say it's valid but Lana is a very talented song writer who has integrity and respect for other talented musicians. Radiohead had a lawsuit against them with the song but they settled it privately and were put in the credits. Being the songs are very different sounding other then the background cords (which i think was an accident) In that case scenario, the should've tried harder to keep this out of the courts. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Plus, I'm a big Lana fan but i wont defend her blindlessly... however, Lana fans are really assholes and will harass the band if taken off the album.
