Radioactive Toilet! Testing the Hot Seat!

Ғылым және технология

Is your toilet slightly radioactive? Maybe.
Spectrometer used was the GS1100A from: gammaspectacular.com/
Geiger counter used was the Inspector USB from: www.geigercounters.com/
Toilet was likely from a hardware store lol
I found Uranium 238, Thorium 232, and Potassium 40 in my toilet. These are normal to find.

"Kaolin is a white clay (found primarily in Georgia and Alabama) that contains elevated levels of the uranium and thorium decay series. This clay is believed to be derived from the weathering of granites which are know to contain elevated levels of these radionuclides." from the ORAU page on it.

This is my first video after a month from hell... family issues, sprained knee, and so much more... Follow me on Twitter to learn more. My Twitter feed folks voted and chose the toilet as my next video :) More coming now that I am healing lol

This is definitely the first and likely the last time I will see someone on the floor, in front of a toilet, where vomit is not involved.

The Hot Seat was 20.50 CPM(4.5 CPM higher than background), on the GMC-320 Plus(no alpha). Glad you're getting better, Tom!

I went to Home Depot and measured all their toilets with my Inspector. All were radioactive. Typical CPM a little over 100. Found one brand with 80 CPM.

With a Ludlum 44-9 pancake probe, a high voltage of 900v, and a threshold of 55mv, 1 minute background counts were from 16-40. The toilet tank cover gave 1 minute counts of 100-130.

Hey Tom, used a Ludlum model 2 ratemeter with and Eberline 330 pancake probe. The “hot seat” measured about 120cpm. About the same as my granite countertop!

Have you tried using Thorium for cal'ing your setup with the 2614 peek to help balance the upper end. I use Cs137, Co60 and monizite ore to give me points across the spectrum. One could also use 2% thoriated tungsten wire, as it is specifically exempted from the source material rule. Just a thought.

Mine went out to 0.5. About double background give or take. Sadly it does not show counts per minuet. Only in Rads which after almost 50 years is probably out of cal.

I just ran some measurement with a GMC-320 Plus with stock GM tube (beta and gamma only). The measurements were timed counts made for 100 minutes each. I ran multiple measurements to avoid statistical differences. Background radiation (measured with counter laying flat on a wood talbe) was : 25.74CPM, 25.44CPM and 26.99CPM (this one was made a different week) Toilet seat was : 28.97CPM and 29.36CPM So I definitely get around 3 more Counts Per Minutes against the toilet seat than on a wood table. Wow, now I will be able to look cool during parties by saying that toilets are radioactive. Well... I guess I'll look more nerdy than cool, but whatever.

Hi Tom, I recently have been put on a prescription of Potassium Citrate, and since hearing on your channel that Potassium is slightly radioactive I decided to check my prescription with my Inspector detector and I'm getting a count constantly above 150 CPM. Do you think this is safe for me to consume or is there something wrong with my prescription ?

  • @Anti-proton

    @Anti-proton

    7 жыл бұрын

I'm not a doc or licensed med person, so I cannot say what is "safe"... But my potassium "lite" salt reads 500CPM on my Inspector and I eat it every day :) If it were me, I would have zero worry. Your body had around 4kBq of K40 (potassium) in your body at all times and eating more does little to alter this.

Real quick test with my SE Monitor 4EC, 28 cpm. About 10 cpm higher than background. Who would have guessed the toilet is hotter than the little uranium glass cup I picked up last year at an antique store.

I was curious too. tested my toilet with a DP-66M with the beta 'shield' opened. To be honest, it was really small, something about 0,05 mR/h, but not only on the toilet but on the floor and walls too (tiles). Yet, it was there.

Interesting. I tested my toilette and normal background here is ~.12 μSv/hr and the toilette was .23 μSv/hr. I don't think my geiger is very sensitive tho.
