Radioactive Cat

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Radioactive Iodine Therapy is a common treatment for hyperthyroidism. This is a geiger counter measurement of our cat coming home right after being discharged from the vet. When I measured him earlier, it actually seemed to go above 64,000!

Dont worry none of the radiation coming off of him is gamma. Most of the radiation coming off of it is just beta and alpha. Beta can give you a slight burn but cant get through your skin. That level womt hurt. Now pet that good boy

@@fillymcwinkenbob4234 couldn't tell which detector that was thanks. Also alpha is probably the least dangerous type of radiation. It however can be if u inhale it or it gets in a cut. Normally it's not as much of a safety concern.

@@johnnymustain6529 (note, much of this is just me thinking out loud so it might not make much sense together) That's actually why I'm so worried about that cat. If the radiation is coming from in the cat instead of just their fur, then (I believe) alpha is actually going to be one of the worst. Alpha is essentially high energy helium nuclei, which is why it has such low penetrative power, but it also means that it wrecks house on whatever it hits. Note: after some googling, radioactive iodine therapy is apparently a gold-standard therapy for feline hyperthyroidism and has little to no negative side effects. It involves giving the cat a capsule of radio-iodine orally, where it enters the bloodstream and is quickly absorbed by the cancerous thyroid cells and only the cancerous thyroid cells. The beta radiation is what kills the cells. This means that the cat is going to be fine and there isn't much alpha being emitted. Also, the reason why I said the detector can't read alpha was on the tiny chance someone said that as a rebuttal, not sure why I thought that. Also also, the reason why that detector can't detect alpha is because the plastic shell blocks it. Also also also, I am far from an expert, I am just an 18y/o son of an ex submarine nuclear technician, take everything I've said with a bit of salt.

When they do that to humans they have a special room that patients stay in for 2-3 days then they're advised to pretty much social distance from everyone for a couple more days

Not true, not sure where you read it, look it up. You might be confusing with some other therapy, not i-131. After radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism, they release humans the same day, and humans get much higher dose than cats. 10 times higher.

@@frypangaming5542 You had i-131 for hyperthyroidism? They gave you a pill - because for humans it comes as a pill or a capsule - and then kept for 3 days? Or thyroid cancer? The dose for the latter is much bigger in both humans and cats. Cats who get it for the thyroid cancer are kept in for 2 weeks. If you were kept in for 2-3 days, you might not be in the US or maybe the doctors had reasons other than radiation to keep you or it was not for hyperthyroidism. The patients in the US are released the same day. There are plenty of papers in vet and physics journals specifically discussing the difference between humans and cats. Cats get 2-4 microcurie. Humans get almost 10 times that. In spite of this, cats are kept for 3-5 days and then we are supposed to "social distance" for 2 more weeks. So even if you were kept for 2-3 days and social distanced for a couple more days, it's still quite a difference with cats considering the difference in dose.

No, that's a GM meter. A geiger counter only measures gamma radiation. Luckily a GM meter measures alpha and beta too. Alpha can be blocked by almost anything, like your clothes even. Beta can be blocked by thin metal. Iodine-131 is used for beta treatment (does emit gamma naturally but not sure about the emission medically. Probably not much). If the cat was emitting that much gamma you should put it in a box lined with like an inch of lead or evacuate. Or both.

My cat just had it. She was kept at the center for 3 days. After she was released which was a little over a week ago, I was instructed to take some precautions for 2 weeks: no outdoors, but she is indoor only, so it's not an issue; no contact with kids or pregnant women; limit cuddling including sitting on the lap to 10 minutes a day - I've read some centers say 20; keep away from food preparation areas, if unable, wash; use gloves when cleaning the litter box and either store litter for a period of time or flush. Wash hands after contact with the cat, especially before eating.

at the very end he says "dont cuddle with your cat after radiation therapy." the effects are temporary, the cat likely has cancer or some other illness that requires radiation therapy and not all kinds of radiation are the kind that immediately kill you. after enough time off of the radiation the levels will return back to normal
