Radio Location - The Most Underused Perk

Ойындар

RPF (radio position finder) or RL (Radio Location), it has been known by many names. One of the most criminally underused perks, this particular one has had monstrous potential since its introduction. In this commentary I focus heavily on its playmaking capacity in both the Gearing and the Shima, the 2 most popular T10 DDs.

Flamu, this a great vid. I do not have this perk on any of my captains. BUT I have to say it's mainly because YOU don't really recommend it's use on many of your captain builds. (which I follow vigorously and believe are the best recommendations on the net!!) SO, what's up??? Where would this perk fit in on the priority order in a build?

First video back after a short break and Flamu apologises for not posting and then goes on to provide more in depth commentary on a game mechanic/perk and how it can be very useful to your DD performance. Follows up with game examples for visualisation and shows how it can be used in a variety of situations. You can tell there is effort put into this video and you can tell that he is trying to improve the overall skill of our player base. As always demonstrating the true definition of a community contributor... earning that title as always, thanks!

I was just about to spend 4 captain points on my Minotaur and your vid convinced me, thank you. Two games thus far: the first was on the same map as your Shimakaze example, in the same position, so it was an easy first lesson (though sadly a loss). The second game was an absolute dream, with RDF/RL playing a significant role in terms of information for my team (3 kills, we stomped the reds).

Thanks Flamu, and get well soon... Looking at the Radio Location text in the perk list, it has always looked like one of those "situationally useful" skills that I have never been sure would be worth prioritizing ahead of some of the others. The way you describe it here, though, it is something that gives you a ton of clues about the enemy team, if you are willing to think about them and turn them into useful information :-) Now working to get the points for RL... With all the high tier ships which have radar, hydro, and probably the increase in carrier players we will see with the new CV playstyle, I think RL will become my first priority among the top ranked perks (for me, working through the mid-tier DDs, that first priority has been the Concealment Expert).

Especially with Clan battles beginning again soon, this is very timely. Secondly, however, Radio Location is a Commander Skill, not a perk. Commander skill. It's only one syllable, you can say it. Skill. Thanks for all of the dedication you've put into the WoWS community and most importantly, thank you for sharing your knowledge, Flamu!

I find rpf very useful, and there are certainly some cruisers I use it on, an Atago with a speed flag in ranked can make a very good dd hunter due to the higher percentage of slower IJN dds that tend to get played. Well you be doing a breakdown for the Ranked Sprint and pros and cons of the ships. Be useful for newer players who may not have played this knd of competition and really thought about what makes a good ship in a particular branch and how to optimise selection. I often counter use RPF all the time, knowing that I am the closest enemy to the holder, I can predict where they will strike especially if I'm a DD myself. I use the surrounding terrain to tell me if they're wanting to flank me out or just hide in open waters. I'm so tempted to use the perk, but have not found a spot to do so... unless of course I use IJN DDs c: I haven't worked on that line yet, and I'm still unsure about what perks to choose for it since I'm so used to playing Gunboat DDs due to the soviet lines. This video is a big help in how I could potentially use that perk too or plan out the build.

The main problem with radio location is that it also works in reverse due to the "located" warning. When the located tag flips from one friendly to another, you know precisely how far away the RPF user is - just draw a line between you and the other friendly ship, then visualize a triangle with that line as the base. The RPF user is at the tip of the triangle.

Radio Location is a subtle, but potentially powerful tool. You can even use it effectively on some lower tier cruisers, particularly if they are manueverable, have Hydoaccoustic search, have decent to good DPM and therefore are already a threat to destroyers. With RL these ships become really nasty DD hunters late in the game and can be used to ambush other cruisers as well. I use it on the Phoenix, Omaha and Duca d'Aosta.

Brilliant vid on using RPF especially using it aggressively (which I'm not so good at it). Talking about people messing up your torp drops, CV's are often guilty of this. CV's can see your torps closing in on a target they decide to torpedo drop them and the target dodges those torps and therefore yours that have a 2min reload... Sigh. Thankfully less of an issue now with less CV's being played but still happens at times.

Enjoyed Radio Location Commentary. Impressive utilization of commander skill as primary assist in destroyer torpedo targeting. My one general question to Flamu would be as following: 1. How does Flamu go about obtaining video clips for your commentaries? Are they selected from archival footage after theme of broadcast is determined? Are the clips prospectively created after X number of games once a broadcast theme is selected? The reason for my query is basically to attempt to balance in my mind (and other people minds) the impressive results achieved in those clips with real life consistent results achieved by Flamu (acknowledged as superior player) and the real life benefit of Radio Location as a 4 point commander skill. How consistently does radio location benefit the player as opposed to 4 points of skills which would otherwise be utilized instead of radio location. How often during game play does radio location result in some or all of the results appearing in the video clips, where ships that are unspotted are successfully torpedoed or otherwise engaged utilizing radio location as a primary assist. - Klebs (AK) P.S. - Enjoy your commentaries. Quality stuff.

Flamu, can you make a list of viable DD builds with RPF ? I don't think there will be that many ... Shima works the same with a 10-14 point captain as it does with 19 points, Gearing does not really need AFT, so the 4 points can be saved. However with the recent change to the Grozovoi, you have 2 must-have 3 points skills and are somewhat limited by your build options. Z-52 I have no clue, I am at Z-23 atm and a fairly low-level captain.

You forgot to mention a thing about RPF. If you use it in conjunction with ANOTHER ship using RPF, and both have the same ship close to them, you can calculate where the enemy is(because RPF gives EXACT location if looking through the middle of each bubble and finding where they intersect) and blindfire with very good precision and accuracy. Impractical, but possible if you are using things like voice chat.

And still may not useful early. But as the game losses players, this is precious. And btw, our great leader once said 'WG smoked quality weed when making this'. So it must be good guys.

so much skill. All I am thinking about when I am playing a DD is how my team is gonna find a way to blame the game on me

Understandable. Ya know, I once had a game in the Harugumo, and my team was like: CAP C STUPID NOOB HARU There was a Worcester and Minotaur in that cap. They took the cap, and my team continued flaming me. Fortunately, I later made a nice carry XD

RPF is useless! Stop telling other players that it is useful. They might actually learn something! /s/ At the start of first Clan Wars season, I had RPF on my Z-52. My clan mates made fun of me. Two weeks later some of them had RPF on their cruisers.

Whilst i don't have RPF yet, i can tell you it looks AMAZINGLY USEFUL. I have German DD's. I think it'd be easier to push knowing where the nearest guy is.

Hey Flammu..try this... IJN DD.. a Yugumo is a good choice. Run RPF, do NOT run concealment module, run TAM instead, and I personally suggest no smoke (TRB!) With TAM you can out spot just about anyone, and with RPF.. *snickers* you might enjoy! I'm an average player ( a little better then some with DD's) And I've had some amazing success with this set up.. so how would it do in the hands of a master player?

I got so much tilted by all dd's not using rpf in ranked ... this is just the most usefull perk of the game as dd, even more if they are smart enought to share position info, no doubt that's just a fact.

In clan..we have 3 that use it...we share bearing info...your now triangulated. And they don't know it...as it's passive and it only tells you your "located"...

Shawn Brogdon - this is a good reason to have a Zao with RPF in addition to your DD. You can get the direction AND distance of the target. Sharing RPF info with teammates is almost half the value. Tell your BB buddies they are being flanked by a DD. Tell the radar cruisers which direction to point their guns before popping radar. So much useful information! It occurs to me that most players probably don’t understand when I type “RPF just flipped” after clicking on the minimap. Depending on the situation, that means either RPF is picking up a new target or the target is moving side to side in relation to me.

I just say "bearing shift", then they glance at my turrets...I've been training them. Sometimes when myself and my other DD skippers div up...(shima, gearing, and my yueyang...not only do we all run RDF...but you find yourself cross dropped on torps. You manuevered so the shima and gearing torps miss...then right into my DW pattern with your rudder all the way over

I have 4 free points and no real good options left to use it on the BB Cesare I am strongly considering this with the short torp ranges at that tier and How I have vigilance already. could be a dds worse nightmare the bb turns and hunts him instead. With sprint ranked coming up its very tempting.

Radio Location can be useful even on some cruisers too, at least I used it on my Arp Takao to sink a DD who spotted me. :) Not as effective as on DDs I think, but it can be fun.

A big reason RPF isn't more common is that most players aren't good enough to be able to use it, even if they can wrap their head around it.

its really up to you on how you want to play this game. firstly it looks simple just aim shoot and improve your shot and predictions. when you play it seriously, its like the autochess but you are just one of the chess piece but you have the influence on the whole game. you need think wise and think far.

Flamu - You sold me on RPF a couple years ago. Do you still feel as strongly about the strengths of RPF as when you made this video? I’ve been using it on T8-10 USN DDs and all IJN DDs except Akizuki and her big sisters. However, a quite good DD player has partly convinced me that I should reconsider some of these builds. Re-grinding Benson for the Research Bureau with IFHE instead of RPF was interesting and my win rate was 65% over 31 games. Our discussions have made me focus more on RPF, both when I’m using it and when I’m “located”. Very good players can and do use your RPF against you. I’ve typically spec’d ships based on most of the players, but this guy thinks building for the “apex player” is the way to go. What do you think? Also, do you think IFHE is worth considering for 120-139mm DD Guns?

Of course the relatively low damage done was because you were mostly focused on DDs that just don't have many HP to farm. Well done in the game and video.

well yes and no when it comes to torps, I mean ive had a few matches when some people deliberately turned and steered into all my torps, but I don't disagree that the punishment at the end would generally end up on your hands
