Radiant Cooling Animation

The animation video is created as a part of Fairconditioning Program. The program is designed to mitigate Airconditioning needs in India to reduce energy demands from our stressed infrastructure, to improve energy access for marginalized communities and to lower carbon emissions to combat climate change. The program is a grant-funded program co-created by an Indian Social Enterprise (cbalance.in) and a Swiss Non-Profit Organization (noe21.org) sectors. Currently, the program is funded by the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation.
In this video, you will learn about Radiant Cooling Technology.

This has very low COP vs Heat Pumps. We should pair Heat Pump ODU heatpipe and put into the ground in a large circuit. This could utilize Geothermal heat exchange and will give max SEER and COPs than any system in the world! SEERs of 25+ can be achieved pretty easily. As Ground always has 5-10* temperature difference than air load will be very less.

what happen if you use just wall cooling and wall heating for summer, using wall cooling it may be possible to condense the water falling vertically to a collector and you avoid the dehumidification unit which it would cost more than a simple air condition unit that do both things (dry and cool).

The same as floor heating I would suspect. However A radiant barrier in combination with the radiant cooling would probably be a legendary cooling system for hot climates!

THANK YOU, this has been very informative. My one query do we need to install only one kind of system on the ceiling and or it can be installed either on floor / wall / ceiling? How do we decide the module, what is the calculation used here, asking out of curiosity.

It's similar to floor heating, but on the ceiling. Remember if your water is cooled to 20C and the room is 30C, then the radiant heat is lower effectively cooling objects in the room that have high emissivity.

If those coils are placed on the ceiling or on the wall then water droplets will drop all over the room. If we decide to cover the roof with something then this cooling will be less effective. If coils are on the floor then also we have to cover them, otherwise we won't be able to walk.

Isn't humidity and condensation the main reason currently hydronic heating installations aren't used for cooling?

  • @MikeTrieu

I don't get why the radiant heat exchange loops have all those 90° bends. Wouldn't it make much more sense to have a bunch of coiled loops to maximize coolant flow? Otherwise, you're going to have immense head pressure.

Why radiant cooling is advertised to take care of ALL indoor air problems, including ventilation and air quality? It does nothing to ventilation, only to temperature. You can still have stifled air if your windows are closed with such setup.

You could dig shallow Wells where the temperature is 9 to 14 degrees c. A simple pex loop in the floor could result in a 5 to 7 degree lower room temp.
