Just as a heads up guys, please don't unnecessarily hate on Woohoojin! Although he has undeniably broken a lot of people's trust and deserves a lot of flak for lying about being Radiant and getting boosted, he has apologized and has tried to take accountability for his actions. The scale of the betrayal is, in my opinion, pretty large and also somewhat malicious in intent, but people change, and I just hope that he truly regrets his action and proves to the community that he's grown from it. My main goal was to point out that although he is a great coach by many standards and he has undoubtedly helped a lot of players improve, there's still a difference in what a Radiant understands and what an Immortal understands from a practical and holistic standpoint. However, it's important to note that the positive impact of just having a role model to learn from is already more than enough for someone to improve when they're still trying to learn the game and grow as a player. Best of luck to Woohoojin on his climb to Radiant! 👍

The one thing Woohoojin does better than any other coach I've seen, even genuine radiants, is give illustrative examples from radiants / pro games. He doesn't say "path here, I'm radiant and I path here" he says "path here, play here on pistol, jingg does it every single ranked game" and shows you the exact VOD. This is how he coached people to radiant despite not being one himself. It's not really something I see anywhere else (or any other game for that matter, someone please coach CS2 like this lol) edit: He does explain his own understanding for "why" you should copy his example pros/radiants, he doesn't simply say copy jingg and that's it. I should have clarified, sorry.

  • @khangis

@@khangistbf this is because pros "messing around" are still, in some capacity playing "correctly". They're not running around blind, they're just taking timings or peeks they normally wouldn't. However, they're still doing everything in their power to make each fight at *least* a 50/50. A lower rank making these same plays without understanding the *why* is inherently bad even if it works out. There's some obvious exceptions, like TenZ, Demon1, etc., who's aim by itself automatically makes most fights 50/50s, while any other player would find them to be 40/60s or even 30/70s. (A good clip is the TenZ tilt clip on ascent with Jett, where he aces while spouting that he's turning his brain off, and even then Woohoojin says he *hates* that clip despite normally glazing TenZ)

  • @royalgftw

    @royalgftw

    Ай бұрын

I think while finding examples is definitely a very helpful way to provide reputable information, there's a common misconception that just because a pro does it, you should do it too. In fact, in most cases, you should NOT be doing what the pro's do, not because they are wrong, but because you don't have the skill to follow their line of thinking and mechanical execution. "Path here, play here on pistol, jingg does it every ranked game" is only really useful if you can also explain exactly why this position/play is what Jingg chooses over any other set of options. There has to be intentionality and an active gameplan that justifies the play rather than just a proof of concept through pro vod, and I think that is something that I don't see any content creator coaches, including Woohoojin, understand well, unfortunately.

Im immortal 2 (not a flex, just want to show my perspective) Overall I think RoyalG has much simpler and clearer way of coaching. RoyalGs advice are clear and easy to follow. Woohoojin has overall good ideas and advice but especially for a gold 1 player the advice he gave this player were very complicated and some cases very situational. I feel like it took RoyalG 2 mins to find the actual “full picture” problem with this player and what improvements would be required. While hooj watched the vod and found small mistakes here and there like not aiming at the head and pin pointed the small mistakes… Overall great video RoyalG! I think you stayed calm and unbiased. I would like to see more of these videos.

  • @royalgftw

I think you hit the nail on the head! The fundamental difference is probably the ability to figure out the 95% issue rather than being able to point out the 5%. I think Woohoojin is great at noticing the 5% (which is still very helpful despite it seeming like a small part). But in many cases, if the 95% were to be fixed properly, the 5% that applies to the situation might change greatly, and that means the goal of coaching for players is to nail that 95% so that the bigger issue is solved, and in the process, some of the smaller problems become either non-issues, or more apparent.

Being a good coach, like anything else, depends on the individual's profile and requires a unique set of skills. These skills include effective communication and the ability to translate the thinking process to the person being coached; you need to have strong interpersonal skills. Even if you are Radiant or the best player in the world, you could still be a bad coach.

Instead, he's offering gameplay/strategies for low elo players and has them submit proof that they are actively working on said mechanics/playing consistently so that wouldn't be the focus of the video. 7:49 I agree about reframing your mindset because the method I used is what can I improve. And there are a lot of subjects about movement, aim, technique crosshair placement, etc. it’s hard to understand a lot of good things. But that’s the only thing I focus on and what will help me to climb if one thing is bad such as aim, then use your brain. This is a good example of adapting of you can do then just worry about your rank. For me, I use to worry a lot of my rank. But slowly I notice that I need to rethink my way of playing the game and adapted. I hope my opinion will help out a lot of people.

The last point, about control, stress and influence is so true. Once you understand that you only can control so much, you can play much more relaxed and tilt way less. At the end of the day, if a teammate whiffs in a clutch, you can't do anything about it, so why tilt? Instead, focus on why you were dead in the first place and what you could have done differently to impact the round.

This video makes sense to me in a way. I was trying so hard to HS more than I need to and end up losing most gunfights. Now I focus on spray control and it feels better. I used to dread spraying until you said that it's not a problem at all.

I started to watch this video thinking that it will be a "toxic" video, to just flame Woohoojin etc and finally discovered an awesome coach ^^' Everything you said make sense so much, and you didn't flame anyone, you explained things in a nice way etc and I loved this video... Didn't think I'll watch the full video but finally I did without seeing times goes by... And one thing you said will help me more is the spray part... when I do a kill by spraying I felt trash, like if someone say "gj" I would think he is just trying to be nice but it was "messy" and I don't deserve the clutch or something like that... so it was putting me down whereas I did secure the kill etc... and hearing what you said about that, now I see this as a positive thing (of course I'm not spraying usually, but when I do it in some cases where I felt I needed to, I felt bad about it, guilty and not worthy and now I will think differently and it might help the round after where I was still in my head flaming myself ^^' ) Anyway awesome video, and I want a coach like you ahah

100% agree with everything you said. I used to really dislike you (IIRC for your smurfing content? Might be misremembering) but I actually LOVE the ways in which you convey all the ideas. The constructive critisizm/subjective differences in coaching between you and Woohojin were extremely informative, and I feel like you hit the bullseye in many of these topics. For example, at 39:05, when you talked about focusing on the bigger things first until around Ascendant. I'm Ascendant and the mistake I was making until now was focusing on all the countless tiny and insignificant ideas that coaches like woohojin teach. I've over-complicated the game for myself, and while I obviously still found decent success from it, I feel like had I focused on the core BIG issues with my gameplay, had I been watching coaches who actually talk about those bigger ideas much more often, I feel like my improvement would have been far quicker, less overwhelming, and easier. I unironically have a document of notes that goes over the stupidest little things, which aren't actually going to help me reach the rank I'm aiming for (Immortal) unless I were to apply ALL of those notes to perfection. But that's like 60+ tiny insignificant notes, very inefficient way to improve, unless I were Radiant I guess where these details matter so much more. It's fun learning about the nitpicks, however for low elo players like me I feel like they are just unnecessary clutter in my mind, that just makes the game far more difficult than it actually is. I feel like maybe Woohojin partially teaches these things because they're a way to create a more interesting video style/format/structure for entertainment purposes. But I may be wrong about that.

The disagreements on the gunfights in the VOD is probably because Hooj sees the major issue of players below gold to be the lack of ability to hit headshots consistently (and he has a guide to hit gold for that purpose) and usually when he gets gold VODs he checks out how polished they are. So whilst body shotting isn't necessarily bad he sees it as worse in low elo players.

Personalising solutions is good but there is a root cause and royalG addresses it. There's no need to manipulate someone to fix something and place ego over it. As royalG said, that's arrogance. In any optimising project, that leads to band aid solutions which do not solve the root cause. It may go towards 90% of the correct way but it will never be correct. This arrogance leads to a spiral of covering up your shit so you release that insecurity in a wrong way rather than deal with it. People overcompensate everywhere in life, this is why that happens. Honestly, based on how woohoojin structures his coaching and chooses his principles in this game, it makes sense why he'd want to overcompensate by being boosted to radiant.

you should watch the "gunfight higiene" video, where woohoojin explains how to take most of the fights that commonly happen in the game. In this video he comments with more detail about how to take these gunfights, this video would be the ideal place for you to comment on differences in how to approach a gunfike, like at what distance should you spray or aim for the head.

I have found out your channel recently, but watched woohoojin for the last year. The thing about hooj that makes he stand out are the pro/radiant vods that he brings to give examples on gameplans, and the fact that vod reviews are free for everyone. And tbf, I don't really like the videos he talks about aim that much, especially if they are recent, cause he did become much saltier as time went on, and the controversy didn't help. Point is, he does help a lot to understand each map minigame, while also giving examples of angles, playstyles and setups, for each role/agent across his whole library of vod reviews. Specially the map guides, those are really helpful.

But I really wanted to master using Phantom. I came from CS where my favorite rifle is the m4a1s which I think the closest resemblance of the Phantom. And I also love watching vods of bang and nats who mains Phantom even in large maps like Breeze. I may be trying to spray a little more often even if it is not a headshot.

Do more of these :D finally some verity in content. Eii you got a point M a huge follower of hooj and cause of his tips and techniques I was able to reach gold (once). but yeah in his recent video he did mention that he is becoming a kind of "d**ck" to their viewers lately and he is trying to work on it. I'd love to watch your reaction on some of his mid to high elo coaching. I completely agree with the things you say and I've been a regular viewer to your channel since your classic only challenge. Was kind missisng your coaching videos a bit though.. In my head Hooj is like a "tough arrogant and strict" coach on the other hand you are "humble, forgiving and empathetic guy" I watch both of you and lots of love. all the best on the Sheriff to Rad series by the way.

At 6:00 with the alt strategy that he is talking about, thought I would give a little input as someone who did that in Rocket League. It was very effective at making me play very well when on my alt, but it had a huge negative that he doesn't really mention and royalg touches on. It's pretty much avoidance behavior from playing in a rank that challenges you and stunts your growth, it tricks your brain into finding a reason to think smurfing is actually helping you improve. In my experience I did this for rocket league around gc2 for over a year and a half, I had 2 accounts in gc 1-2 at all times and would switch depending on how I was playing, but it left me permanently hardstuck since the moment I would reach a new peak the nervousness of playing in lobbies that outclass me would make me switch back to the other account and I never improved. I only broke that wall of gc2 into gc3 when I stopped using alt accounts at all and just used 1 and forced myself to play in lobbies that I was inferior in.

As a dualist and somewhat consistent top fragger in my games.. I appreciate the way you talked about not always trying to shoot the head. Personally, I think it's a bad habit to only try and shoot the head. Obviously do your best to aim for the head when you can, but as humans our mechanics will never be perfect and we have to recognize taking advantage of various scenarios where worrying about a hs will get you killed.

One thing I like to do in competitive games is "think simple". I play a lot of Rocket League and I just think "pass mid" or "shoot top right". So just a simple task. In Valorant this would translate to "ok move position" or "shoot him". The result will speak for itself. At some time you can replay your game and think "What could I do better?". Then actively start to train your weaknesses. But this mentality really helps me to not care as much. Also the advice by just "having no control" for some aspects is really important. I play with some friends who just play the next round and then I have others who apologies for every time they die in game. So yea. I think comp games are mostly mental on performing your fundamentals.
