I had the exact same problem. I put a new starter capacitor in and still didn't work. Then I saw your video. Cleaned as you recommended. Also cleaned the contact switch with very fin sand paper. Now it's working like brand new. Thanks a million !
maxmike35's comment was the copper plate was not resetting back. That exactly what mine was doing. It was hanging up, but when I pushed on it it would slide back. Then the motor would start normally. So, after lubrication and compressed air blowing I just decide to pry out the right side slide tab a tiny bit and bingo, she started every time. This video got me looking where the problem was, and I appreciate that! On shutdown you can hear the plate resetting back to the start position. If there's no clicking sound, that your issue.
Just prying out the tab to make it slide easier did NOT fix it. I had reassembled it thinking it was ready for use, but it still hummed and wouldn't spin. So, off came the covers for the third time and that's when I decided I would loosen those tiny set screws and move the centrifugal switch in or out. Well, moving it out made it worse, but moving it in made it work like normal! The video really skipped over that crucial adjustment for some reason, but that was indeed the key to the issue. Thanks.
Very handy tip, Joey. I just started tinkering with an older (older than yours) Craftsman 10" RA Saw that doesn't have the upgrades on it. I can find use for any/all videos such as yours as I learn the ins-and-outs of this line of tools. I've used many craftsman power tools over the years, so am very comfortable upgrading this one, but will need all the help I can get from contributors like yourself. Thanks, and happy woodworking!!
Thank you so much for making the video on the old Craftsman. Mine stalled out while ripping a 2X8. The reset button did not seem to help. I had no idea that motor cover would be so easy to remove. When I pushed the reset button with the cover off, it clicked and the motor ran again. Both the saw and myself are old and tired.. I have .cancer and there is little use in buying a new saw as it would end up in a yard sale in a few years. LOL Thanks again

Thanks for the video. Just cleaned the magnetic plate you pointed out and fixed my radial arm saw. Great tip.
Just found this video in 2020. I replaced the capacitor because it was stalling out, then not starting at all even after resetting the breaker. Freaked out when I got the capacitor replaced and had the same problem. Thanfully I found this video, blasted all the sawdust out of that clutch and moved it back 1/8” so it started making contact again. Good as new!

Glad to know i helped!
Dude! You saved me a couple hundred bucks!! I was ready to go out and get a table saw as a replacement cuz a friend said my motor was shot. Took the cover off as you demonstrated and tinkered with that clutch thingy and - zip zap zoom - I'm back in business!!! Many thanks for taking the time to share what you learned.

What exactly did you do? I have found the clutch but not gotten it to work

@@WarrenHodges Hi Warren, I was never able to find the problem exactly. But just disassembling and reassembling got it to go for me. Sorry I can't be more specific. That was 4 years ago and it's still working today.
I just recently had the same issue regarding the "Centrifugal clutch" sticking in the open position. Basically I could turn the saw on and it ran fine, but after switching it off it would hum and rock back and forth (Blade), but would not start again. I tried cleaning the clutch with brake cleaner which cleared out allot of debris, but did not fix the problem of it sticking open. So, I decided to create a workaround to the problem by strategically drilling a hole in the top of the motor housing so that I can stick a screw driver in it to pop the clutch back in place to start it again. I used a rubber plug to cover the hole while running to keep sawdust out of the motor. Seems to be working great... extra step to start the motor, but much better and cheaper than throwing it out and buying a table saw. As you all know, they don't make these anymore and they very versatile, rip, crosscut, miter, I have even used it as a drill press! Hope this helps.
Thanks dude. Was about to give up on my saw. good stuff.
Excellent! This is exactly what was wrong with mine. I researched everywhere online and your video is the only one I found that had my exact problem. That copper plate was not resetting back. I adjusted that plastic fan wheel with the two hex screws with the Allen wrench and seemed to fix it. It did stick once or twice but hasn’t after about a dozen more tries. I think it may need alittle more adjusting but you helped me discover the problem. Thank you!

Same problem thank you adjusted the nut in works great
Watch your video I was having the same problem with my Craftsman model 509346, 1987,adjusted the centrifugal clutch ,working GREAT,Thank.
T/Y for the nice vid.
My Craftsman RAS exactly like yours was running fine. I used compressed air to blow out the fine sawdust inside the motor through the openings on the housing as I hadn't cleaned it out in many years. When I was through all the saw did was hum and not spin over. I thought I ruined it and was ready to take the motor off and get it rebuilt until I saw your video. I did like you did and also cleaned out what sawdust was still on the inside of the housing. After hitting the copper contact with a screw driver which is all I did, the saw started right up. Maybe there was sawdust somewhere not letting it make electrical contact from blowing it but thanks to your video I got it running again which saved me time and probably lots of money. Thanks for posting your video.

My saw looks exactly like yours. Still diagnosing, nothing at all happens. Great shot seeing that starter switch action helps. Might me that reset switch.

Joey Gambers it was just the reset button. You have to let it cool to cold and press it many times to get it reset everyone.
bought this exact model tonight off FB Market, gave a whopping $30. Im hoping this is the fix it needs. Thanks

@joeygambers4489 I did and it helped. It was just the thermal over load, so I'm good to go
Dude...thank you!
I've had what seemed to be the same problem but it was even easier to fix. I used a larger gauge extension cord! It's easy to forget that these are big motors that need lots of current, especially to start. Have you ever tried to suck a thick milkshake through a small straw? Same problem the motor is having. Poor motor overheats or there's not enough current to let the magnetic clutch work reliably. Give that a try first. You can save yourself lots of work.

Many thanks. Your advice helped me, as though I had a heavy duty extension, the supply I was using seems to be for low wattage output, so I took the cord into the house and plugged it into a normal socket and hey presto ! I am restoring an old DeWalt dating from the 1960s that I received 20 odd years ago and haven't used in a while after moving house. I was disappointed at first that the motor was not working, but thanks to your advice all is well. Best wishes from 100V Japan.
My saw stopped working. I hit the red reset button, and nothing. Came back the next day to let it cool, and tried the reset button again. Nothing. However, what did work was holding the red reset button down with some firm force until you feel a second click. That was it! Back up and running! Good luck!

Thank you. I just bought one tonight for $30, thought it might be the overload switch, however when I got it home, I tried with no luck. However after reading your comment I pressed it harder until it clicked. I now have a working saw.

Perfect! So glad to read this!
I have the exact same same issue. Did you lubricate or just adjust somehow?
THANK YOU.... YOUR 2COOL
Has something to do with the electromechanical brake. Have the same issue. I have a newer model craftsman electronic radial saw. Turns on but doesn’t kick into full speed with the blade on. Take the blade off and works. I oiled the mechanical part of the cooling fan and it works for a day. Trying to find a way to bypass the circuit all together.
The Brake is actually a centrifugal clutch. Contacts get dirty and doesn’t kick the motor in full speed. Little sand paper to the contacts will solve this problem.
I have this exact saw and I need some help. The nut and the plastic bevel gear fell off of the threaded, shaft elevating rod when I was attempting to raise the blade. Can you remember how I get that thread rod to come back down far enough so I can thread the nut back onto it. Presently, the rod it almost flush to the surface, and I cannot get the nut onto it. Thanks!
the radial arm saw have a capacitor that could be bad and it will not start........ the saw need that extra surge to start, that is the reason for it........ just replace it. good luck
Pretty sure it’s a 1979 give or take a couple years
Omg. This is not starting ok. It needs a new capacitor and now probably needs the centrifugal switch set properly. The reason it starts ok without the blade and not so well with it on has to do with the flywheel effect of the blade. A new capacitor will fix this. Also, youre lucky you didnt kill yourself sticking your finger into the centrifugal switch without discharging the capacitor.
