It depends a bit on how the 7800XT and 7900XT overclock, because comparing stock to overclock is pretty stupid. Still, they won't go nearly as high as the 7900GRE, given that this GPU uses the same VRAM chips but clocks them lower. I assume that the original Chinese launch used lower quality chips and AMD kept the clocks the same in order to not create yet another new SKU.

Even $10 to $50 price difference can influence buying decisions. Also the import issues/bans from the USA influenced the card. I gotta say, I'm never gonna overlook other brands again, I'm in love with this card, especially paired with my AORUS fo48u. Me taking a chance on a different brand has definitely changed my perspective on future PC components.

The bigger chip makes up for the older architecture. 7900 GRE has 80CUs, which is the reason why it scales well compared to 4070 supertitty, again its a big chip. Nice to finally see this GRE re-re, re-re-re, re-review. So a card that was originally vanishingly faster than their own 7800XT was capable of some pretty substantial gains after AMD got out of their own way, often able to perform more akin to the 7900XT and I particularly think breaking even with the 4070ti Super in 4K was significant. Personally, I think merely naming it the 7900 for the world market would have been best. Also fantastic to include OC results for the 4070 Super right off the bat since potential buyers should naturally be curious what they might be able to extract there as well. Can’t wait for a re-re, re-re-re-review of the 13900, now wearing the “14900KS” moniker.

When talking about overclocks I feel like it’s really important to not forget power draw. Overclocking my 7900xt can add 75 watts to TBP which is massive. Undervolting is another area that’s not often talked about either since it allows more clocks. Would love to see more testing here for red and green cards! I can overclock my 7900xt to stock 7900xtx performance but decide to undervolt instead to reduce power significantly while keeping just above stock performance.

The 7900gre needs a memory overclock, not a core overclock so power would be largely unaffected. Secondly, maybe a partner 7900xt can hit a MBA 7900xtx, but a partner 7900xtx stock is going to be well out of the range of a 7900xt, and the partner 7900xtx cards can overclock pretty well too.

Hey Steve! It would really benefit clarity with all these numbers 3:50 and so on with some simple tables where all those numbers can be read (and even paused the video). Normal clocks vs. overclocked models. Also regarding test system (memory, timings, specs). Thanks. p.s. And it would always, always (!) be nice, if you would include some older (maybe last gen) GPU for comparison instead like RTX 4060 or 7700 XT ... because people looking for a new GPU simply don't have a comparison point with the newest lineup. But let's say a RTX 3080 or a RX 6800 XT would be a nice reference to know, if some threshold like 60 fps is in reach, or not. So someone with a RTX 3060 or 2080 has an idea, how much faster a 3080 was. But 4060 "Ti Super 16 Gig whatever" can be tricky sometimes. p.p.s. Interesting video though (of course ;) ), but a final comparison in "bang for buck" (especially against 7900 XT with it's 24 (!) Gigs of VRAM) or some titles tested with RT (because of the RTX 4070 Super comparisons) would have been the cherry on the cake.

In my country both the 7800 xt and 7900 gre sit at around €600, gre actually being cheaper in multiple stores depending on the model. This was the perfect time to lay my good ol rx 580 to rest o7

LOL. Yeah... I though I ran my RX 580 for a long time, but you take the cake, Sir. That card will need a little shrine to sit on with a label that says "A real trooper is too stubborn to die".

I'm curious, what kind of power was it drawing at those speeds? Does it scale better in ray tracing with the extra cores?

7900GRE 4k gaming card for 550...good price/performance i guess. fsr also getting an update. would love to see it drop to 500 (very fast) for everyone needing an upgrade.
