When at anchor I have the mandatory anchor light, the deck light and AIS on. That hopefully covers everything from small to big.

Hi Colin, here is a section of a reply I've copied from another comment: "Ships can actually "turn off" Class B AIS on their screens, so if they are transiting somewhere with lots of leisure boats, they may do this to avoid clutter on their screens. Radar reflectors are a legal requirement because radar is a primary means of navigation for ships in bad visibility. AIS isn't... This is just my opinion and I could be completely wrong (I often am!)" Cheers, Chris :-)

I got a great deal too for the same echomax directly from echomax just because it was slightly off white. Have it mast mounted though

Great videos Chris. We have a 350 lagoon and I noticed that you have a below deck autopilot. We have a wheelpilot which is not really man enough for the job. Any chance of a short video of your installation?

Hi Steve, just a quick interim update: You're not the first person to ask this as a Patron of ours has the exact same problem and wants to do the same. I do have some footage somewhere in which I explain how our entire steering system works from start to finish and how I worked out where the approximate 30 mm of play at the wheel was coming from (two bearings inside the pedestal, which I replaced before setting off for the channel crossing). That footage does cover the autopilot setup too. I've spent about 2 hours so far looking for those video files but I haven't been able to find them yet (we have hundreds of GB of footage on lots of different drives, SD cards etc. and as we move around a lot it's easy to misplace files). If I do find it I'll make a video and upload it here. Cheers, Chris

Hi, Thanks for the video. However, I'm not clear on what your old reflector was. It looked like you were pointing at some linear object on your rear stay. However, I also say what seemed to be one of those reflector balls hanging in between your mast and forestay. I don't believe that you talked about this. I have a similar ball type thing on my boat (never used it). But I have been thinking about this lately and wondering if a transponder may be a better option. I'm also wondering if I install a radar system, would it also then transmit identification out (perhaps this is what AIS is?)? If so then then I wouldn't have to worry about a relector right? Sorry, I'm just a bit confused and only strating to now learn about this stuff. I'm also concerned that a radar or AIS system might quickly drain my batteries.

I've got the same radar reflector on mine but fixed to the mast. BNIB for £40 bought secondhand as it was too big for his fishing boat. Apparently about £120 new so a good bargain.

Thanks for video. I'm normally inspired by each of your posts. Curious whether you got around to finally mounting the radar reflects with "dynema" and if you did, whether you hung it from the spreaders or put it somewhere else?

@@SailingBritaly can you fit them horizontally on the top of the spreader or will you hang vertically underneath?

If you’re at Harty Ferry, no large ships come that way apart from the occasional Thames Barge. The big ships go the other way out towards Sheerness.

I was just passing through the Swale for the first time so I'm no expert on the local routes the ships take. I saw a big Dutch registered aggregate ship being loaded/unloaded up the Swale earlier that day (In the centre of this chart: webapp.navionics.com/#boating@14&key=oyrxHmgsC), and with 4 or 5 metre tides at that time, it would have been conceivable for them to choose to take that route out while I was anchored, so I preferred not to take any chances. Day shape - at anchor - ball. (Usually plastic)

Ours is mounted on the mast, we haven't collided with a supertanker.....yet!

Hi George, the vast majority of these kinds of radar reflectors are mast mounted and I can see why as they are 'fit and forget' and stay up out of the way in convenient location. They still give a very good return from there, apart from a small 'blind spot' from directly astern, so the vast majority of the time this wouldn't cause any issues, although a theoretical risk does exist that a boat could be being missed on a radar screen of a ship approaching from dead astern. If this was to happen the boat owner would no doubt make a heading change and this would have the effect of eliminating the blind spot. Cheers, Chris

Hi Jim, it is an Imax Thermo suit. (amzn.to/38hQOBv - link supports our channel at no cost to you) It is toasty warm and it is breathable, although if you start doing gymnastics you'll overheat pretty quickly, even in winter. It has kept me warm and dry in some very wet & windy weather, so I am very satisfied with it. Cheers, Chris 👍

No Ais on your boat?

We have an AIS receiver, we don't have a transducer. If we did, I wouldn't necessarily rely on AIS for collision avoidance though... Here are some examples of why a passive radar reflector can protect you where AIS wouldn't: • Lightning strike (Could destroy all electronics, a passive radar reflector would still work) • Electrical failure (As above) • Ships can actually "turn off" Class B AIS on their screens, so if they are transiting somewhere with lots of leisure boats, they may do this to avoid clutter on their screens. Radar reflectors are a legal requirement because radar is a primary means of navigation for ships in bad visibility. AIS isn't... This is just my opinion and I could be completely wrong (I often am!) Not everyone looks on radar- especially in the USA waters- you’d always need to be on the offense over here as we DO NOT use collision avoidance systems onboard major oil and cargo tankers... Do NOT ask me why- every year over here we have several tankers collide at sea and at port... Unfathomable for me- a small 13.5m vessel...

AIS is not a required system, nor is it as effective as radar. As Chris mentioned, they have an AIS Receiver only on Britaly, which means any ship using AIS to navigate around boats won't find them. ( the weakness of AIS ) Radar as an obstacle navigation tool is much more effective, you get a reading on anything solid enough for the signal to bounce off of. The issue with radar is that often the display can get cluttered with false returns. both have use for navigation and actually work well together, the best tool for Chris' situation in this vid is the lights. Those make a boat very visible at night, far more than most would think.

Elite sailing they could have givin some problems !! aahh ....aaahh.

SOLAS V Regulation 19 2.1 All ships irrespective of size shall have: 2.1.7 if less than 150 gross tonnage and if practicable, a radar reflector or other means, to enable detection by ships navigating by radar at both 9 and 3 GHz; These regulations apply to all pleasure vessels and if a skipper is ever involved in an accident, not having a radar reflector would be very difficult to defend. You are, of course, free to disagree. Chris

It covers the following requirements: • Voyage planning • Radar reflectors • Life saving signals • Assistance to other craft • Misuse of distress signals You may be prosecuted if you’re involved in a boating accident and you haven’t applied the basic principles outlined in this leaflet." Here is the 2 -page leaflet: www.gov.uk/government/publications/solas-regulations-for-pleasure-boat-users That sounds very much like a legal requirement to me, but you can interpret these regulations any way you see fit.
