Gotta admit, you love your bike! I did a 1000 watt set up on a 90s mtb with street slicks and roll on the flats at 30+ no pedal. It’s hilly where I live. So I give it a couple hundred watts of leg power when going up hill to keep it at 30. When battery (48v) is fresh I read 1300+ watts. It’s all fun after pedaling for years. Be careful out there when rolling fast. Cars see a bicycle and don’t expect high speeds.

I just ordered a 1000 watt which probably isn't ecotric Hammer bike I've been working on bike since I was 7 years old but I never worked on a electric bike. I do have some knowledge of electricity. So you don't have to put a new motor to make it stronger? You just send more juice to the motor? Where I live in New York you're only supposed to have up to 750 watts but how is anybody going to know? Besides it probably is a 500 when they say it's 1000 anyway right? So thank you so much cuz I can upgrade this. And this will be my only mode of transportation and I only have one leg and I can't wait to get it it could be a while. Just because it says it's 5 days it could be a month I hope not I plan to do a video. I'm so excited I just can't wait to get that bike. This can change my life drastically. I wonder what the farthest anyone ever went on one of these is? And I wonder if I can just put it on throttle because I only have one leg so how am I going to ride it? Unless I just put one pedal around with my right foot? I know it has throttle assist. I know it's illegal just to have throttle but if it only goes 20 miles an hour what they going to do take away my birthday?

I mostly use it for 18 mi round trip grocery hauler. My bike feels rite spritely now vs this works fine. Its like the difference between a standard 4 cylinder Subaru and the sleeper 3.6R 6 cylinder-more stuff happens when you twist the throttle. I did the upgrade also. A word of advice: keep an eye on your tire beads on the rim & the spokes. Neither were designed for that beastly torque! The tires will start to tear from the rim (about 1/8” from the rim which is hard to see). The tire does not slip, but the torque from a standing start will stress the tires and the spokes. If you can keep from going full throttle from a complete stop, both the tires and spokes will last longer. Also, it is a concern, as replacement batteries are $500 at last check, pulling over 750 Watts continuously will not only wear the battery out quicker, but the max distance on a single battery will decrease proportionately. This, I have learned from over 10K miles of bike-commuting through a major metropolis with substantial hills. I’ve not found a heavier tire to take the torque, or heavier spokes in that length that will work. If anyone does know, please forward to me. The upgrade is worth it (but getting the settings calibrated is still an issue). Bolton eBikes is a great vendor & willing to work with you!

Great video, keep posting about how your motors doing. Basic Watts Law says something should fry. 750 watts at 48 volts draws about 15 amps. 1200 watts at 48 draws about 25 amps. If the motor windings are not sized to handle 25 amps, only 15, it would blow a fuse and if no fuse is in line, those windings would fry. I'd like to do the upgrade but I think I'll wait and see how your, or others motors handles it first. Might save me a couple hundred dollars. Lol. I don't remember the Bolton Bikes guy addressing this extra current draw on the motor.

I just took my Rad Rover 6 Plus out for 2 hours today. I live in an area with mostly hills, some steep. During a ride through a local golf course I came upon a medium in length, steep incline. I had it on easy pedaling (level 2-3) with pedal assist adjusted to 5, and nothing. I had to stop and walk the bike up the rest of the incline. I am not a strong rider - so this could just be me. This bike is a beast in weight. I decided to leave the course and go up other steep hills in my neighborhood. When I was in pedal assist 2-3, I still had throttle, but once I went to assist 5, I had nothing. I tried all different things with easy pedaling + assist 2, 3, 4....but once the hill became more steep, there was no assist on 5, OR no throttle with lower levels assist - nothing. I live over a very steep long hill, so now I am wondering if I just shouldn't have converted my mtn. bike to an e-bike since the RAD seems to be a dog.

I didn’t do anything to my controller or 500W motor and it pushes past 1000w. I love my e.bike, has enough juice to get me everywhere I need or want to go with some left over, if I open it all the way up, Throttle only I go 25mph, about 30 with pedal assist. Only things I did to it had nothing to do with performance, put a rack on back with the bag so I could have someplace to store my my things and the 2 locks I use, and I have 2 cup holders that I use for the 2 Bluetooth speakers I have that fit perfectly inside them. Oh, and a phone Mount. Right now it’s perfect, maybe in the future I’ll upgrade a few things to see if I could get it to push past 30mph. But right now, I love my bike. Only thing I hate, and hate is to much, more like a annoyance that I deal with every few day but it’s easily fixed in a second. I just rather not deal with it. That is I have half twist throttle, when I hit throttle I’m lightly tightening the grip and every few days the throttle gets stuck and I have to loosen the grip. I have to see if I could change to a full instead of the half. I don’t like the thumb throttle’s so that’s a no. The half is fine, if I just could turn that and not tighten the grip part against it, so since I do that I might as well have a full.

Hi! I'm new to ebikes and just ordered my wife the Rad Rover 5 and a bunch of the accessories you recommended. My question is on the Wattage. I understand that the motor is a 750W motor in the the wheel hub, so is that what makes the bike a Class 2 ebike? If bump the battery wattage up, does that change the class? We were planning on biking together in the state parks in IL, MI, WI, and IN and it looks like the Class 2 is approved everywhere. My other question is how would the Park officials or my town officials even know whether I am Class 2 or Class 3?

I spoke to the police near me and unless someone does something brazingly stupid--or has a wreck with injuries in which they get called to--they have never checked or have even been briefed on ebikes.I ride mine on sidewalks all the time--I keep the speed down and pedal lightly to make it look like a normal bike--so I doubt as an adult if you ride responsibly they will mess with you.I plan on adding a front hub motor to mine--but I just want the torque for trails not for speed.BTW any bike can go almost any speed--When I use to mountainbike--some folks were routinely hitting the low 40 MPH on downhill roads--I also hit 34 on mine on just a medium downhill and the hub motor had little to do after 25 mphs--it was momentum--the hill and peddling.I like you try to obey all laws and honestly anything over 30 mph on any ebike--or bike is just dangerously fast--neither the brakes or tires were probably designed for that long term.I also live near an aggressive police force that likes to enforce all they can--so if they do not seem to care--i doubt most police will.Only thing i see happening is if folks speed in parks--park rangers do conduct radar speed checks like police and that would probably land you a ticket and they will check the class 2 sticker and might even go through your menus to check and see if you made the limiter higher.BTW even with my limiter maxed out--the bike motor will not do over 20 mph--it will only do 28 with the motor if you pedal with it.

Beautiful job on this bike! Be careful though. I took my Schwinn Meridian and put a 1000-watt motor on the front hub. Since then, Washington State changed the laws and we are legally allowed to have up to 750 Watts on an ebike on a bicycle trail. So folks should make themselves aware of their local laws.

Hi I saw your channel about a year ago, unfortunately, after I purchased a lethargic ebike, not a rad. But someone selling a re-labeled 500 watt as a 750, much like rad does. I've looked for Boltons upgrade, but their site is down or their business is gone? I have a question about the controller that you got from them. I may order one somewhere else. For the amp ratings, I see most controllers have a "rated current" as well as a "max current" listed on their data plate or the specs. For the controller that you received from Bolton, what were the rated and the max currents listed on that controller? It will at least be a guide so I don't run too much to my motor. Your channel teaches a lot about diy ebike experimentation. Please keep up the videos. I appreciate your diy approach and honesty in your videos. Thanks in advance for the help.

Just like the controller, a battery has a BMS where it can run at a certain amperage all day every day. But doesn't mean it can't peak higher amps every so often. A 35a controller is not pulling 35amps 24/7. If a battery has 30a BMS and the controller is 35a maximum current pull. It's more than fine because that battery can most likely handle 60a peaks every so often.
