Rad City 5 E-Bike -- FAIL!! Plus Troubleshooting

I jumped on the Rad City 5 for a ride one afternoon and the electric motor was not working. It didn't work using the throttle and the motor provided no pedal assist. I turned the bike on and off a few times, changed the battery, and checked all the connections but nothing worked. I contacted Rad support and they got back to me right away via email. Rad support suggested I try a few diagnostic tests and this video shows what I tested.
The end result is that Rad is sending me a new wiring harness and a new controller for the motor. I will have videos of the wiring harness installation and the controller installation. But, right now, I'm waiting on the parts.

    HI Barry, an update you might be interested in. The original bike they sent me August /22 had an electronic error and they finally sent me a new one in November last year. I boxed up the other and shipped it back to them. Since then I have put 1500 miles on the bike with only minor issues to deal with--had to replace brake pads and basically just tighten up bolts here and there and epoxy the mirror. No flats. I got a large front rack so it's a superb cruiser/cargo bike. I have not had to adjust the derailleur even once. Battery is in fine shape, tires not worn down much at all--just keep the pressure high. As I said to you once, the German ABUS wheel lock--AND separate locking chain is a MUST for this bike for quick stop shopping. Also, I will often lock the front wheel with the large ABUS lock you have... not really to lock the wheel much for a quick stop... but to prevent the lock from just being lifted--yes they will do that just to get the satisfaction of messing you up. Such is the young delinquent mind-set. Good luck with yours. Daniel

    Hello and thanks for your video. Sorry that your RAD biked failed, but I'm confident that after you replace your controller, you should experience no issues. Unfortunately, RAD has a serious issue with their quality control with their plus model controllers as this same issue happened to me twice, once to my next door neighbor, once to you and many times to countless who have posted online; coincidence, NO WAY. For anyone on the fence, I'd seriously consider the Aventon Aventure which is a similar "big wheel" version of the Rad 5 / 6 Plus. Unfortunately Aventon does have a long history with their customer service issues which has been documented online over the years. To RAD's credit, they did honor their warranty and their customer service is excellent. Good Luck and please keep-us informed.

    I'm guessing that the problem with the controller is heat. The controller is installed up in the downtube with little airflow for cooling. Any kind of electronic device generates heat and heat is a big problem for electronics. My problem occurred in Florida where it is fairly warm. But, most people ride their e-bike in warm weather so this may be a problem in any location.

    Same issue with my City 5. Controller fixed the problem. Tricky install due to screw sizes more suitable for a laptop than an ebike. Make sure you use a quality torx 9 key tool. The instructions Rad has online are helpful and accurate. I laid the bike on it’s side to re-install the top battery mount, so when you drop the tiny screw it doesn’t fall into the bottom bracket.

  • @barry_k

    @barry_k

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you. That is great advice. I bought some Torx screwdrivers to use on the controller installation which I've already attempted (videos on wiring harness and controller install coming up). Actually, I got the controller installed which was tricky working inside of the bike's tube. But, I was unable to get the top battery mount installed because the controller wires would not let me get the battery mount up into the tube far enough. Please, if you have any advice on installing the top battery mount, I would greatly appreciate it. All the best -- Barry

  • @briankeith9951

    @@barry_k The top mount was tough. I almost cross threaded the bracket with lower screw. I had to run the tiny screw into the bracket without the battery mount to ensure the threads were not damaged. I laid the bike down into my lap to get more leverage to push the bracket into the controller wires. Probably fought it for fifteen minutes, eventually the wires gave enough to allow the bracket seat properly. I think installing the upper screw first part way will also help seat the bracket. Tiny screws, tight spaces, and 60 year old fingers, not easy. Take your time, it’s a nice bike with the new controller. Good luck, Brian

    Hi Barry, Thank you. I bought my 7th Rad bike first "non legacy" bike for my 60th birthday a Rad Rover 6 Plus in August of 22 It spent 207 miles on the road and then died. They sent me new controllers (I have 7 still in the boxes) I have been going around and around with RAD since Sept 2022. They sent me new wiring harnesses. Finally after 2 months of trying their troubleshooting, Rad paid for me to take it to a shop in Vegas where it sat for 5 months waiting for parts and etc..... It has worked sporadically since. DIED again on a ride - now has about 700 miles on it. I ride alone and live in the Mojave Desert. The #1 trick right after it starts up run it backwards putting the throttle on and off, that fixed it. For Now. I am afraid to ride this bike because it doesn't "not work" when I head out on the ride, it stops working in the middle of a ride. I live in the Mojave Desert. I ride early mornings and alone. It is a huge drag to have to walk the GD bike home. If I die in the desert because I got stuck on my RAD, I'm going to tell my family to sue RAD POWER BIKES. This Rover 6PLUS is not reliable. Frustrating. Sad because I call my Rad Rover Legacy from 2017 with 15,000 miles on it - "Radliable" that's what I ride most. My 60th birthday present to myself is a 2000 dollar Rad 6Plus pile in my living room. RGGGGG What Happened to RAD Power Bikes?

    I have had my Rad City 5 for 3 years, and was pretty satisfied until I started having an intermittent problem with pedal assist and throttle. My experience with Rad support has been very dissatisfactory. Each time, something different seemed to fix it. Once it was a brake lever, once it unplugging the headlight, then the other brake lever. Sometimes just riding it worked, then on another site someone mentioned just letting the brake levers spring back, this worked a couple times. I even had the bike in the shop, the tech checked everything out but could not get it to fail, three days later, it the problem recurred. It finally has seemed to go solid, hopefully it can be diagnosed now. But RAD has not replied to my e-mails, and I can't get them on the phone. This is extremely frustrating. I also think this could be very easily solved by including error codes in the program.

    Barry, being that I’ve “ranted” about my RAD Step Thru Mini and RAD’s “support system”, I felt that it would be appropriate for me to keep you and your followers up to date on things (my progress…) BOTTOM-LINE: Use RAD phone support 800.939.0310 (RAD’s sending me out a replacement CONTROLLER and WIRING HARNESS) WHAT I’VE LEARNED: 1. Email is a poor-to-bad choice for problem resolution with RAD!!! - Initiated my issue / complaint via RAD’s online ticketing system - corresponded with RAD, via email only… - This lasted about 3-weeks with an overall HORRIBLE rating for RAD’s support & assistance 2. Called RAD, 800.939.0310, referenced my open ticket and within minutes RAD initiated an order to send me the replacement parts (controller & wiring harness) that I’ve been requesting for the past 3-weeks! - RAD’s phone support was *SIGNIFICANTLY* better route than email correspondence

The customer support is terrible: promises of return call never happens, send the wrong parts, impossible to get on the phone with any tech support person knowledgeable about the product. My city5 high step has been working great with the replacement controller Rad sent out. I have a lot of experience repairing bikes and motorcycles, and even so, the replacement process was a bit nerve racking. The tiny screws holding the battery mounts are very tricky to get out and back in. Worried about stripping the the little t9 heads while removing and potentially cross threading when reassembling. I never tried to call Rad, just emailed. I was very unhappy with the tech support from Ariel Rider, I think it is going to be an issue any online seller. The customer service issue is that Rad doesn't really have a service shop within 60 miles of Grand Rapids, Michigan (metro population of over 1.5 million people) -- even though they say they do. More on that later.

    Barry, you seem to know what is going on....Might you have a schematic diagram of the wiring of the bike? I would probably understand any problems a lot better. I wonder if one is available.

    I got my bike about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Error 22 new out of the box. What a nightmare this has been trying to get rad to give me a working bike or take it back. Not good luck with either. They said it was a controller problem, then said no it was a throttle problem. So they send me a new throttle and harness, guess what didn’t work. Then said well will send a controller. Then I get a text saying sorry controllers out of stock. So now I think they didn’t send a controller to start with because they had none. I have asked repeatedly for them to send me a new bike, no. Never heard back when I asked to return it a week ago. I asked for an extended return time because I got bike that is broke, no. Either keep or return. Well the return part isn’t going well. My husband cut the box up. So now will have to find a box if they should ever decide to take it back. Then sad thing is I don’t want to return it. I want it, just would like it not sitting in my kitchen. Would like using it.

    They are great bikes when they work and Rad's problem appears to be with their controllers. Hopefully, Rad finds a manufacturer of controllers that has better quality control. I hope you are up and running soon. All the best. - Barry

    @@barry_k hello Barry! They sent me a wiring harness and a controller. The rad technician over the phone said it is most likely a faulty controller. But the controller is out of stock and they do not know when it will be in stock... It can take months ... How long did it take for you to receive your controller? Did any representatives tell you how long it will take for them to be in stock? I know me and my partner will be looking at your videos for help with installation. I make a joke where I call you uncle Barry because I learned a lot watching your videos and you seem like a calm nice guy so it's like a running joke when I talk about my bike issue at home. 😂

    Hi Nonya - It was back in February of this year when I needed a new controller. It took about 3 weeks before I received the new controller at that time. They didn't say how long it would take. I received the wiring harness in about a week and the controller about two weeks later. I hope you don't have to wait months.

    I wonder if these Rad Power Bikes are failure prone. I bought a brand new one for my wife for Christmas and the thing never ran. Front light out, no power to rear wheel and battery flashing low battery even though it is fully charged. You can't talk to anyone from Rad on the phone. Only chat. Did ALL checks on line to remedy Error 30 without success. Chatted with someone. Bike was OK, until I hung up with the chat person. Then failed again. Was too late to chat again. Then New Years.....waited until today, Tuesday. They are sending me a controller and wiring harness. Hope it works. Kind of sorry I didn't research more before I bought this bike, but my wife specifically wanted the Rad Rover.

    It took a new wiring harness and controller to fix my Rad. The wiring harness, as it turns out, was just fine. It was the controller that was the problem. The comments on my videos here would indicate to me that Rad has a serious quality control problem with the controllers on their bikes. ~Barry

    I hope the wiring harness does the trick for you. I didn't for me so it must be the controller. I wasn't able to get the top battery mount back in place after installing the controller (see my comment to Brian). I'm now waiting for Rad to get back to me on that. It's been 6 days since I notified of them of that problem and I 've not heard back from them yet. :-) Good luck with your repairs. Let me know how it turns out. -- Barry

    I just got my rad city 5 plus no power to the throttle. Called & they said it could be brake levers. Wheeels spin freely. Did u ever get a code 21 flashing on ure speedometer

  • @barry_k

    @barry_k

    2 жыл бұрын

    I never got any codes on the speedometer. I disconnected the electrical lines from each brake lever, one at a time, and each time I had no power to the motor. I believe that when you depress the brake lever, the brake lever disconnects the power to the motor. That is probably why Rad thinks it may be a faulty connection in the brake lever.
