Racquet Stringing [String Tension Devices | Tracking & Comparisons - Part 1 of 2]

There are many devices that can measure the actual string tension in your tennis racquet. These string tension devices help track tension loss. But have you ever wondered how they compare and if one works better than the others?
I'll share with you an experiment that I took a month to complete.
* I strung three racquets with three of my favorite string setups.
* I measured the initial string tension using four devices - Babolat RDC, ERT700, RacquetTune, and Stringmeter.
* I measured the strings again after one day, one week, and one month.
Check out the results of this one-month journey!

Aloha Coach AM! ✌️😎🤙 Mahalo for another great vid & experiment! Ur most welcome & really glad we were able to save ur ERT from extinction & obsolescence🙏👍 I was wondering when u were putting this video together…🤔 It’s really methodical so good job 💪👏 👍 Wish I could’ve sent u my ERT 300 & possibly alongside a MSV Mini STT to include in ur test/ experiment… maybe when u do the tension test under real life playing experiment. The ERT using vibration detection from piezo speaker & sensor is patented & quite genius. RacquetTune is almost there, but lacks the accuracy & consistency due to mic variations & limitations. Great stuff & keep up the awesome job as always 👍 Have an awesome weekend & keep them strings singing in Hawaii. Stay safe from Mauna Loa 🌋😅 Pretty cool that last time both Mauna Loa & Kilauea were raging together was nearly 4 decades ago… U rock! 🥂🫶😎🤙

Aloha Kenzo, Glad you enjoyed the video! Shucks, I already started the Part 2 video about a week ago. But thanks for offering your string tension devices. Funny you mention Mauna Loa, I'll be featuring pictures of lava glow sky as viewed from the tennis club. Luckily, I'm far away from the volcanic activity!

Great video! I have the racquet tune app and it seems to work ok for me. Do you have any recommendations for the tension calibration settings within the app? It is very confusing and I don’t know if mine is setup correctly.

Aloha Scott, Thanks for watching. The RacquetTune app works for most string setups. However, it doesn't always work on some hybrid setups. It's nice when the string you're measuring is listed in the RacquetTune app. When a string is not listed in the app, I create a generic string based on the material and gauge. I hope this helps. 🤙

another helpful video. thanks Albert. do you think the string /string COF affects the readings these machines produce ? i use the Tension Tune app, but i notice that some strings (particularly Head Rip Control) always seem to measure higher than strings that move across each other more easily ?

Aloha Ralph, Thanks for watching! Hmmm, that's an interesting question. I think the Tension Tune Tech people may have a better idea and hopefully they can answer your question. Let me know if you decide to reach out to them and if you find out anything that is worth sharing. Mahalo! 🤙

Regarding dynamic tension, I've always wondered if string gauge also affects the reading. If you had two strings that are the same but just differ in gauge and tensioned using the same reference tension, I would guess that the thinner string would be easier to deflect so that it would have a lower dynamic tension.

  • @AMstringing

    @AMstringing

    Жыл бұрын

Aloha Piyush, That's an interesting thought. My guess is that initially, they would have similar readings. But over time, the thinner gauge string would lose tension faster than the thicker gauge string, due to pure physics. Therefore, the thinner gauge string would have a lower dynamic tension. This might be another interesting experiment that I'll keep in mind for a future video!

Aloha, Yeah, a lot of stringers were anxiously awaiting the return of the ERT300 this past summer. It was difficult to get one then and I guess that's still the case. I would be in your shoes too if it wasn't for my ERT700 that was recently fixed. I hope you can get one for yourself soon!

Your String meter is defective or the spring is bad. Throw it away. I’ve seen them go bad b4. I have a new 1 and it measured the mains 56# with 51# reference and 10% prestretch. Cross low 40s some with 48# which is normal.

Aloha, That's something I haven't considered. I have a brand new backup Stringmeter, so I'll compare the two and see if that is the case. Thanks for the suggestion. 👍
