Rack and Pinion (2642 Pitt Pirates)

Ғылым және технология

This past spring I attended the FRC North Carolina State Championships and got to talk to a bunch of the teams. If you've never heard of FIRST Robotics, you're in for a real treat, because this competition is AWESOME. (If you haven't seen the hub video for all these interviews, check it out first! • The annual engineering... )
These teams, thousands of them, have only about 2 months to design, build, and test robots to play a brand new game before the competitions begin, and then their work is put to the test! It would be a lot for any professional engineer, but these kids are still in high school! It's pretty incredible.
This video is the complete pit interview with FIRST Team 2642. Enjoy!

If you're interested in finding a team or attending an event, here's the official team search from FIRST:

And if you want to know more about any specific team (like a link to their website) you can probably find it on Blue Alliance:

This is a world map that shows events and teams. I'm not sure how accurate it is because it doesn't look official, but it's a lot easier to search by eye! (and it also doesn't include the other FIRST programs like FLL and FTC (FRC was featured in the video))

These kids are smarter than me! So cool to see young people working in teams to solve problems, some of the best preparation for the rest of life.

If you ever visit Georgia during season, check out team 7470 irambots! We are basically a veteran rookie team with last year (my first year) over 2/3 of our team was made up of newcomers and we were a ~12 person team. We got knocked out of the game during semifinals last year and we’re shooting for worlds this year

I did FRC in highschool. It was a blast. I wish there was like an adult version of it. Closest thing is formula sae.

It's funny seeing a bunch of highly logical engineers knock on wood at the mere mention of cable issues :D Human nature is really hard to change, I guess.

Funny enough, we ripped out some of our own wires in a later match that day (this is my team) so I guess our wood-knocking didn't really work

It's so much easier understanding the students without the masks on. I'm all for them wearing the masks and I do myself even though it's no longer a mandate here in this part of Aus. After following the linked map I found that there's some Aussie teams out there battling. Very nice.

how autonomous are these robots? I can't tell from these videos how much human control they need.

During a 2 minute and 15 second match, the first 15 seconds are completely autonomous. Our robots were supposed to move from a zone on the field and could pick up and shoot the balls for extra points. The remaining 2 minutes are driver controlled
