Racism and Climate Change Are About You | Dr. Atyia Martin | TEDxDirigo

Climate change effects us all, but it doesn't effect us equally. In this thorough talk, Dr. Martin examines the intersections of climate change and racism, from who's at the table during policymaking, to which communities are effected by natural disasters, and which receive resources first. Incorporating multidisciplinary data and research, Dr. Martin proposes ways for us to scrutinize bias in ourselves, our workplaces, and our social groups. Dr. Atyia Martin is a Certified Emergency Manager with a diverse set of experiences in public health, emergency management, intelligence, and homeland security. Mayor Martin Walsh appointed her as the Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Boston as part of the 100 Resilient Cities initiative pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation. In this role, she is responsible for leading the development and implementation of Boston’s Resilience Strategy. Boston will focus on advancing racial equity as the foundation of the Resilience Strategy process.
Dr. Martin has served as adjunct faculty in the Master of Homeland Security at Northeastern University. She was previously the Director of the Office of Public Health Preparedness at the Boston Public Health Commission. Her previous professional experience includes the Boston Police Department’s Boston Regional Intelligence Center; City of Boston’s Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management; the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI); and active duty Air Force assigned to the National Security Agency. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

From around 5:40 to 6:10 there's a point being made that institutional racism is perpetuated by "us, all of us". That all of us are part of that "system of racism" is what I take from that. Okay, so the point seems to be somwehere along the idea that there's individual responsibility in every person for the system of racism. From around 9:15 to 9:37 there's a point being made that is expressed as follows "institutions and the way they're run and the systems that we keep talking about, they're the things that are broken, not the people". Now I'm thinking which is it? People or institutions? Not very compelling arguments, and sadly a certain ammount of points just seems to be implicitly true because they're popular in this day and age.

I think what Dr Martin is trying to say here is that climate change will disproportionately effect people of colour. More people of colour live in areas vulnerable to environmental degradation as a result of climate change (you know flooding, desertification etc.). Personally in this talk I would have liked more exposition on the intersection between climate change and racism however I did find myself being well educated on how racism can pervade all aspects of life. Perhaps that's the most important understanding to have when talking about racism and climate change 🤔 yeah.

Please feel free to contact me on Twitter (@BostonAtyia) and I would be happy to learn which parts of this talk promotes guilt and how I exemplify/portray racism. I would also enjoy learning more about your reference on the "very people who fought for their freedom"...The generalization was unclear to me and seems to cast all white people in the same light. Do you have any videos or writings that we can review to better understand your position? I am always willing to be educated. All the Best.

Thank you for your reply. It's difficult to know where to start in a response to your questions. Therefore, I'll begin with your first assumption. First, as far as I know and I've been studying this for awhile, there is no empirical evidence to suggest that mankind has anything more than an insignificant effect, if any, on our constantly evolving global climate. Supposedly, you understand that our climate has been changing since the beginning of the earth's history, sometime quickly and drastically while at other times more slowly and possibly not as drastic (depending on time and location). In some cases it could be seen as a positive change and at others, not so much so. If you know of such a study which clarifies that the carbon dioxide produced by mankind's activities is a significant cause or controller of our ongoing climate change, please share the link for our follow-up. Once we've clarified that point, we can move on to others.

Good Day: Thank you very much for taking the time to watch my video. I do not conflate the two...it is a high-level comparative analysis between how people react to the two. Based on your statement, it seems as if you have not studied issues of racism. It is in fact a well-studied issue across many scientific disciplines (neuroscience, sociology, psychology, history, etc.). There is no debate among the experts whether or not racism exists and therefore, I will not debate with you on the matter. I wish you and yours all the best on your journey for knowledge and wisdom.
