Racing Jam Chapter II - Arcade Gameplay on Real Hardware

Ойындар

Captured from the real Konami NWK-TR hardware, NOT MAME/EMULATION, I bring you the attract mode and gameplay of the highly forgotten yet awesome 1999 arcade racer, Racing Jam Chapter II. Using a PC power supply, a GBS-8220 video converter, a VGA to HDMI upscaler, an Elgato HD60 and wires that were ripped from a Silent Scope harness, I captured the game in 60 frames per second, in stereo sound with no compromises. I bought the game's PCB set about a year ago, hoping to eventually get it running on my desk to test it and New Year's Eve, the time had finally come.
This game, as well as the original Racing Jam, are NOT working in MAME, so as a racing game and arcade enthusiast, it has always been important to me to get this game going and to share it on KZread. There was never a home console port of either Racing Jam, so if you want to play these games, you'll have to find a machine or buy the PCB set and make your own setup like I did.
0:00 Vectrex4Life Intro
0:09 Setup Demonstration
5:51 Initial Boot Up
7:22 Attract Mode Cycle 1

19:46 Winding Road (Steering Only)
21:21 Bank Circuit (Steering Only)
23:07 Bank Circuit (Acceleration Only)
25:19 Unlicensed Hidden Ferrari (Manual Transmission Fail)
26:49 Shut Down
This version of the game is from a deluxe cabinet, which uses a clutch pedal and a 5 speed H-gate shifter with a reverse gear, so if you want to use manual transmission, the controls have to be wired up. A fail of this can be seen at 25:41 because I don't have those controls wired up. During the boot up process, you can see that this particular version of the game is the GN676 UAE version made for North and South America, which has NOT been dumped, so I definitely want to extract the data soon. GN676 is the code name for the original Racing Jam, which means that my PCB set was originally Racing Jam 1, but was converted to Chapter II by swapping 9 ROMs and keeping 2 of the original GN676 ROMs in place. Swapping the small network board is also appears to be necessary according to the conversion kit's manual. GN888 is the code name for Chapter II.
On top of being Chapter II, on top of being the more uncommon deluxe version and on top of being the American version, the notorious real-time clock (RTC) timekeeper RAM that kills these Konami boards, is still good. Either someone did a hell of a great job soldering on a new one, or the original one is still there and still working 20 years after the game's release, which is quite impressive. I was genuinely expecting it to be dead when I finally got this going, but apparently it's still alive. No matter what though, the amount of life left in a timekeeper RAM is unknown, so it could die any day now, I just hope to record a full playthrough of the game very soon and share it with the world. Since emulation currently isn't an option, and so few know about this game, I feel it's important to share the game as much as I can for the world to see. For now, it seems that my PCB set is working great, with the exception of a minor graphical issue. You'll see in various places during the gameplay and during the transition to the Racing Jam logo in the attract mode, that there is some flashing lighting. Not sure what the problem could be, but everything is marked as 'OK' on boot up.
I don't have all of the controls wired up yet, just the start button, 3rd gear button and 1 analog control of my choice. (Steering, gas, brake, handbrake or clutch). This is why all of the gameplay is either with full on acceleration with no control of the steering, or complete steering control and hardly any acceleration. Once I get every control input working, I'll make a full playthrough of the game as well as demonstrate the test mode. Strangely the analog control values increase more and more the longer the game is on, so with only the steering wired up, the car will gradually move on it's own. However the brake and handbrake values increase at the same rate, making you stuck in 1st gear. Manual transmission was largely avoided since I currently can't make the cars go anywhere.
Even though I technically haven't fully played the game yet, I can already tell that it's a gem. Konami has never been known for their racing games, but a 90s racer that had real Japanese sports cars with wicked courses and really fast gameplay? Sounds like a precursour to the Initial D Arcade Stage series! It has the AE86 and it has a togue course, the only thing that's missing is eurobeat, haha.

Wow! This is the game that I could remember so much from my childhood years. Thanks a lot Vectrex for this video! I played that game (Racing Jam Chapter II) back in 2008 - 2013 (I think?), in WalterMart Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines; spending some arcade quarters (not real curency - aka Philippine Peso) to the game in which I am fan of nostalgic driving games (esp. 3D games at that time). I always played the Beginner A race track (BANK) and chose random car(s), just for elegantly fun (not even a pro chance, lol). Then after those years, the arcade management pulled over that game - due to possible "spare parts" issue (or other matters), and I was so sad as well. Man, if they (Konami) could port into the PC version (Windows) and on Sega Dreamcast, plus maybe on PlayStation 2 + Nintendo GameCube in the first place, then I would be very happy (and might get addicted as well, if they could also add the "Local Play" or even "LAN / Internet Play" on Multiplayer mode, because why not?) to see and play this game for good! Can't wait to play this game again, once I found it soon (esp. in Japan or other countries - if there's any chance)! More info: •I recently discovered the Japanese flyer of Thrill Drive (1998) just now, and this is the link: maedahiroyuki.com/20200113-%E3%82%B9%E3%83%AA%E3%83%AB%E3%83%89%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%96/ •On the technical software side - both Racing Jam and RJ: Chapter II ran on *fully 60fps (frames per second)* , while Thrill Drive is only at *30fps (or likely in 32fps)* ala Midnight Run: Road Fighters 2 - Winding Heat tandem & GTI Club. •Also, *the official soundtrack of Thrill Drive (1998), is out here: (Please check it out!)* kzread.info/dash/bejne/iWik1th-oq-9ZZc.html (Over 10k views!) •Right now, I spend playing on Thrill Drive on older MAME versions (esp. on 0.147 / 0.148) due to compatibility (faster emulation speed up to normal). Remember, the newer version of MAME, it's getting worse than what you expect (and might crash the emulator). Also, there's this weird issue that I cannot select countries, only Japan - unless you're playing with "enable mouse input" (but yeah, the problem still exists because at some point, it causes to turn left or right randomly or for worse). •Lastly, the JAE version of Thrill Drive (the only working one so far, the JAB and the European EAA had "Hardware Error (-11N)" issue) is the *Deluxe version* (which has 5 + Reverse gear shifts).

Hope you guys enjoy this rare look at this forgotten gem! This has been a long time coming as it has taken about a year of on and off research to get this game running. Never before have I personally hyped up a game so much. Even though I can't fully play it yet, the real Japanese cars, wicked courses, fast gameplay and energetic personality have already shown me that this is a match made in heaven. If there were any games that were top-notch predecessors to the Initial D Arcade Stage series, Racing Jam and Racing Jam Chapter II are it. Let me know your thoughts on the game in the comments! Time codes and loads of other info on the game is in the description.

Vikrinox Nah, I've spent under $150 for the whole setup. Many arcade boards can go for several hundred or even over a thousand dollars, but sometimes with games as forgotten as this one, the demand isn't really there.

Vikrinox Anyone who is serious about arcade collecting will usually have a KLOV account, so the website gives an idea of which collectors own which games, but it generally isn't an indication of a game's rarity. There could still be hundreds of Racing Jam machines still in arcades, we just don't know, but considering its age and the deal with the suicide battery, there's probably not a lot. Arcade machines and boards don't always cost as much as some people think, I traded an Xbox 360 for my Asteroids machine a couple years ago.

Vikrinox I see, yep arcades in America are few and far between as well. A former shell of what they used to be. I like a good hardware boot up as well, you can literally see the components of the PCB that are being checked. I think it's a lot less interesting if a game boots up immediately.

That kill switch really makes sense.. and gives me closure to one of the best multiplayer racing games in the 2000s. This game was MAJOR in Hawaii, almost all major arcades had a cabinet. But the main arcade franchise "fun factory" had that big screen cockpit. The pearlridge location on Oahu had 6 of those fuckers lined up at the front of the entrance. It was a great time. One of the best things about this game was being able to gain speed. And drift/clip opponents and make them spin out. 😅😅

Haven't seen a arcade game with a detailed layout like that since. :( And I've been looking for it ever since. Game was so fun.. Speaking of games that doesn't work on MAME, have you heard of the racing game Thrill Drive? Its a racing game that prompts you to drive carefully while trying to finish a race. Cause' if you do crash, its realistic as it is horrifying (for its time). First time I crashed, shock of my adolescent life. I actually played Thrill Drive 2 and I think like Racing Jam was an update to the original. My god the memories of that game stuck with me, its like when its a Burnout game that treats its crashes as horrifying consequences instead of awesome spectacles of flying metal.

We'll get there eventually. I have no idea about Chihiro emulation, though I know you can play some of the games on a real Xbox, including Ollie King. I defintely wanna get the real hardware someday. What I'm still baffled by is the fact that the Racing Jam games were arcade exclusives that have suicide batteries, on top of poor sales. There's probably only a handful of machines that are still on location. Aside from the suicide battery, Konami boards from this era aren't exactly bulletproof, so MAME or similar emulation is the only long term solution.

Spatializer 3D Stereo, developing company, who work with Konami, not only they work with the Racing Jam franchise, but also, they made a Gradius spin-off game with 3D element concept like starfox named Solar Assault. They where 2 versions of the game, a Japanese only version named Solar Assault Gradius, featuring 5 stages, while there is a 2nd revision titled Solar Assault Revised, features 6 stages, 1+ extra stages, and the last stage was length with an additional boss, it also features some graphic fixes in some stages, and bosses. Meanwhile the US version, we had the Revised version (with the extras I mentioned) under the title simply as Solar Assault. Amazing for SPATIALIZER 3D STEREO company, for the ideas 😎😎😎 However, just like Racing Jam, Solar Assault, also had multiple technical work with this, as the MAME emulation community, struggled to get this to work, now is playabke, but with some slight bugs, depending with what MAME emulation are you playing with.

For some reason, there seems to be a lot of really nice looking Konami racing games that are still unemulated to this day, such as Over Drive or Racing Force. The strange thing about those is that Over Drive is the only game running on Xexex hardware that doesn't work, and Racing Force is one of two games that run on Konami's System GX hardware that doesn't work. Perhaps sometime in the future you might get a chance to look at those.

I actually came pretty close to buying a tested and working Racin' Force board set on eBay for under $30 total, but the wiring for the analog controls stopped me, as I'd probably need the wiring harness to control it. But yeah, Konami has a ton of great forgotten racers, GTI Club, Winding Heat and others. I think Midnight Run 2 is pretty good but there's still flashing every few seconds in MAME which is strange.

No problem, glad you found this video! Beginner B is actually a slight twist on the Beginner B course that was in Racing Jam 1. That version was pretty much a tight figure 8, where as this one has more corners. There are a few very low quality videos that show it. My board set is being preserved at the moment by another enthusiast, but once I get it back, I'll make a full playthrough of the game. Believe me, I'm looking forward to it myself.

CursedChad I do as well. The only ones I think that have one is the San Francisco Rush series, F355 Challenge, Battle Gear 4, and a variation of the original Ridge Racer. The original Racing Jam had 4 Gymkhana courses as well as lots of tuning options, so it totally made sense to have one. Chapter II removed the Gymkhana courses and the tuning, though I think they just kept the clutch and H-gate shifting for the sake of being easy to upgrade the game in the same machine.

Issues with this game on mame: Car textures are not right, proably due to the konami 2d chips not figured out. The textures are random every time the game boots up. Ex: The skyline with a finish flag texture. Slow, proably due to SHARC emulation. Game freezes, like some other konami 3d games. (Winding heat, fighting bujtsu, thrill drive, teraburst) Sound hardware emulation is not perfect. Cobra version did a gfx test, then crashes.

I remember there being an arcade racing game that played replays when ever you crashed with this somewhat dramatic music. It was kinda like in Stunt Driver for DoS, but this was a much more traditional arcade racing game. For years I've been trying to figure out what game it was. Differences between racing jam 1 and 2. (̶N̶o̶t̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶n̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶C̶o̶b̶r̶a̶ ̶v̶e̶r̶s̶i̶o̶n̶)̶ seems that the cobra version has some hidden differences. Obviously gymkhana courses were removed, getting rid of it's gran turismo tuning qualities. Music is different, i like racing jam 1's music. (P.S the music in cross roads is the same music in hillclimb in the original). Some courses ( other than gymkhana) have different layouts. Racing Jam has more emphasis on the clutch than Ch.ll Chapter 2 includes secret cars. In the sound test, dont stop the music is the music that plays in the volume setting. Chapter 2 has the bank melody as the volume setting music. Game over screens are different. Course pics are different. Interface is different. When you gain a place in chapter 2, it makes a slot machine like sound. Unlicensed opponent cars (seen in the attract mode spinning out) dont appear in original racing jam. Update, chapter 2's attract music is a remix of the original. Overall, chapter 2 is more wacky compared to the original. cobra version has a 3D view of the course in the course select screen, compared to the NWK-TR version, which has a 2D Map caused by Hardware limitations. cobra version has options in the test menu to check the boot sectors. due to it having a hard drive. cobra version has a sound dram option in it's test menu. gymkhana's skybox in cobra version is different than the nwk-tr version. Cobra version offers a semi automatic as a transmission. cobra's test menu font looks like thrill drive's test menu font. Cobra version renders everything in quads, while nwk tr renders in triangles sound channels are handled differently on the cobra (2 channels for sound effects, 2 channels for music) while nwk-tr has the channels mixed together. And also, that weird flickering is proably caused by the failing custom konami 2d chips. Thanks for reading this comment. It means alot to me.

I find it impressive that you know this much about them. Do you have a machine or the PCB sets for these games or did you play them back then? I actually now have the Cobra version and it has superior graphics (though not by a lot), better sound and maybe better physics. Other than that, the games are basically the same, with the same courses, hence why both are just called Racing Jam. All 3 games have a hidden Nissan Stagea Wagon that can be unlocked if you hold the brake over the Skyline GT-R. I definitely think the original Cobra version is the best of the 3 as I see Chapter II as more of an "expansion pack" rather than a fully fledged sequel. The winding road course is the same and the circuit night course is a slight variation, so Chapter II basically has 2 and a half new courses. If I get the ROMs for Racing Jam NWK-TR, I'll have all 3.

And no, i do not own any version sadly, i would like to find the cobra version though. The problem is the battery and the hard drive. If the battery dies, then the board is useless. I the hard drive fails, then you're stuck with a dead board. (P.S, Can the Cobra version use a compact flash card for storage? Just wondering.)

@@Jack-fe6vv Thanks. The thing is, I bought the Cobra with a dead battery. I sent it to a fellow enthusiast who grabbed the data from MAME, installed a socket on the board and made the battery changeable. I have the original hard drive and it's still working fine. You can use compact flash, but I haven't tried it. If the hard drive dies, I can just pull the data from MAME and put it on something. Aside from the hard drive and suicide battery, the Cobra is very power hungry and is unreliable to begin with. There's 6 boards in total and it was expensive, over-engineered and wasn't nearly as successful as Sega's Model 3. (Scud Race/Super GT in particular) My board set has several, very intricate repairs done to it. Whoever did them definitely knew what they were doing.

@@Vectrex4Life yeah, the cobra was expensive as hell, and your right. It was over engineered. (Proably based of the GXP2000P opengl accelerator.) What you get is an inefficient system. And P.S, is the attract mode different than the nwk tr version? And fun fact, the 604 can support multiple CPU's, so it's use isn't very surprising.

ETM316 Hey, it turns out that Racing Jam 1 DOES run on the Cobra hardware. I recently bought the PCB set. I've been told it doesn't work, I'm waiting on a power supply setup to test it but I'm really happy to own it regardless. It seems that the Cobra hardware was so expensive and so unreliable that Racing Jam was ported to the much cheaper NWK-TR under the same name. It featured different courses, but was definitely graphically inferior. Despite giving the Model 3 a run for its money, I think Konami realized they couldn't compete with it, as the 70" machine cost $24,000. Then when it came to Chapter II, it was a simple ROM swap on the NWK-TR. So there are actually 3 Racing Jam games, but one looks much better than the others.

After actually (attempting) rewiring one to try using on my Model 3 driving game boards and PC (with the Ultimarc A-PAC), it WORKED but the pots for the hand pedals lose calibration quickly. I have no idea how to replace them. I was able to isolate the lugs of the pots inside by carefully desoldering them and daisy chaining the +5V and GND. Theoretically you'll need to run a new Mini DIN (6-pin) connector to the wheel attachment completely, and I think there is an unused pin on the 6-pin connector inside the base you would need to solder in order to properly use everything. Not a difficult wheel to mod but you're lucky if yours has working pots. Did you get the other buttons and paddles working on your GP1 for this?
