Racing drone made faster and stronger with Redbull engineering

Ғылым және технология

DinDrones OZR is a racing drone frame that was designed by Redbull Air Race engineer Ben Freelove in collaboration and piloted by Din. Great to see air craft level engineering finally trickle down to drone racing, and the unique features are pretty compelling.

    I was a fan of the Open racer when you introduced it to us a while back - I have to say that this does look like a very smart and logical evolution of that frame. Would like to check one of these out and will most likely do it on my next build. Cheers

    If you look up the definition of Sh*t pilot in the dictionary you will see my picture. I built two of these quads, loaded up the presets for HDZero, ELRS, and the OZR tune and was absolutely blown away by how well this quad handles. No quad is able to compensate for my dismal lack of race skills, but this quad upped my racing enjoyment factor by making it easier to do more laps, faster. I'm ready to pull the trigger on another frame to have three race rigs ready to go.

    OpenRacer is/was such a game changer for me. Finally allowed me to fly as fast and as hard as i want without constant worry for broken components/hours on bench fixing. I think it is for sure one of the top 3 things that helped me to progress. Building another today actually to test a new stack.

    @JonE5FPV ya I'm excited to fly the open racer. I was bummed that five33 stopped supporting the Swichback classic it's a tough frame I've crashed it into tree trunks with no damage. I like the fact that the open racer will hopefully be available for a long time. I hate being forced to upgrade. Been following your channel a long time I remember when you proposed to your wife with your drone your pioleting skills have come a long way and I remember you saying guys stop siming so much. LOL. and now I'm always like at least 10 seconds slower than you, so please stop getting faster. Ha ha.

    Carbon fiber braces are pretty light, but when hit all that force goes right to your electronics (I assume). I wonder if the braces were made of nylon or polycarbonate, would it make the race quad both strong and force absorbing to protect the electronics (at the expense of a little more weight)?

  • @din_fpv

    @din_fpv

    4 күн бұрын

    the main purpose of the brace in this build is to add arm stiffness, so they dont flex under load (heavy corenring etc.) and dont introduce any new noise to the gyro. If you 3d print a brace, you'd need to make it thicker and wider to get that stiffness, and it will be not 2-3g per brace but 8-10g which kills the purpose of a lightweight build. My whole point is - main goal of the brace is not protection. But ofc you can sandwich two together haha

  • @JonE5FPV

    @JonE5FPV

    2 күн бұрын

    The printed stuff is very strong when thick as Din mentioned but then would be heavy. The pod itself add a lot of protection. The brace adds some buy not as much as say an OpenRacer brace that is 5mm (ozr braces are 2 or 3mm I believe). But I ended up not running braces on OpenRacer anymore since so heavy. So lightweight brace you actually run ends up better than heavy brace you leave off.

    I'm still out here running way jankier stuff than Jon - but yeah, what a rad frame. I'd still want to build one of these slightly chonkier with longer arms for the back, but this is definitely something I want to try out.

    You mentioned that you apply the karate tune on your other drones. I think you mentioned on discord ones that you also apply a filter tune for noisy drames/builds on top. Do you still do that? Also bash my quads a lot and don't want to change props every time. 😅 Karate is nice but can get a bit hot, even without the spicy setting.

  • @JonE5FPV

    @JonE5FPV

    I do always choose the noisy airframe option due to my penchant for running nasty props. But I think they removed that option around 4.2 and now my motors hotter than the sun. But this tune. They landed Luke warm to cool

    @@JonE5FPV Thanks for your response. Just checked BF configurator and these presets are also available under 4.5. (Noisy and Very Noise Build, with and without RPM Filtering). So you would apply the Karate Tune (without spicy) and then add noisy with RPM filtering in a second step? If correct, I would give that a try and see how it feels. 🙂
