Rachmaninoff: Trio élégiaque for piano, violin and cello no.2 in d minor op.9

In celebration of the 4th Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition, Dmitri Makhtin, Alexandre Kniazev and Andrei Korobeinikov perform the Trio élégiaque n°2 in d minor op.9 by Rachmaninoff. Live concert at the Radio France Auditorium, recorded on 6 September 2018.
After a first short Trio élégiaque composed in January 1892, Rachmaninoff began working on his Trio élégiaque no.2 on 25 October 1893, the same day as the death of Tchaikovsky. He completed the work in five weeks ("All my thoughts , all my strength, is dedicated to the work"), and premiered the work himself in front of two of his friends, on 31 January of the following year.
However, it would seem that the work was composed somewhat in a hurry, emotions, since Rachmaninoff made numerous changes between 1907 and 1917. Surprisingly, he removed in 1907 a part for harmonium initially added to the second movement!
The initial Moderato opens with an obstinato piano motif, a sinister lamento followed by a profoundly sad melody played by the cello. The violin joins the melody until, at the end of a poignant crescendo, an Allegro moderato suddenly arrives, closing after many adventures with an enigmatic conclusion, both painful and resigned.
The vast second movement is made up of an Andante theme, initially exposed by the piano, followed by eight variations. The theme, explains Pierre-Emile Barbier, "is borrowed from the Fantasy for orchestra op.7 "The Rock", a work composed by Rachmaninoff in the beginning of 1893 and one that Tchaikovsky hoped to conduct in Moscow". The variations do not grow progressively in size or speed, but rather on the contrary vary textures, moods, and speeds, from the Allegro for the three instruments to the final Moderato, passing by a Lento for piano solo, a whirlwind Allegro scherzando, an incredibly bare Moderato followed by an Istesso tempo, placing the cello in the limelight before finally returning to the piano with the Allegro vivace and the Andante.
The brief Finale concludes rapidly by returning to the melodic material of the first movement, ultimately dyingaway sorrily.

These three Russian musicians perform Rachmaninoff’s excellent second trio with incredible skill, pounding through the faster parts with passionate intensity and synchronicity and the slower passages with such beautiful tenderness. Certainly one of the very best versions I’ve ever heard (and watched).

Agreed with you in every single word. In my memory, I can't remember a single performance with so much enthusiasm in creating atmospheres of pianos and fortes, and a dynamic of intimacy so proper of Rachmaninoff music... Very happy to hear it...

Every single note most definitely does not have purpose here, nor in any other piece of Rachmaninov focusing on the piano. All those octaves and chromatic arpeggios are for the sole purpose of showing off, as is usual in the composer's Lisztian heritage...

Don’t think it’s showing off. It is the vocabulary of his style just like a painter has a palette. It is very sincere, heartfelt and dramatic and so the octaves and chords are there. It is another question whether there is fine balance between the instruments and if the themes have distinction and if the overall composition is successful. The composer made cuts in 1917 to some parts.

Quelle oeuvre merveilleuse de Rachmaninov, qui nous change bien de ses concertos si connus, mais qui garde bien la trace de tout son romantisme, ici, parfaitement enregistrée par trois grands interprètes russes, qui le servent parfaitement !!!

Dit is met afstand de mooiste uitvoering die er op KZread te vinden is. De compositie zelf - door Rachmaninov geschreven toen hij 20 was - getuigt van een buitengewone klasse. Wat een bijzonder tribuut aan de overleden Tsjaikovski! 🎶🕰🎼

@@zinam5795 Вы думаете? Я просто слышу это трио скорее как фонтепианный концерт (по количеству и важности того, что лежит на пианисте), поэтому если пианист играет замечательно, почему бы его немного не усилить? :-)
@8:41 this it the same music that the great American Olympic figure skater, Michelle Kwan, used. Her figure skating performance was every bit as riveting as this performance here. I would urge anyone to just look up: Michelle Kwan Short Program 1998 National Figure Skating Championships (she's wearing a Red and Gold dress). The performance is sublime, as is this performance.

C'est quasiment un trio pour piano et pour violon et violoncelle obligés . j'ai bien apprécié cependant .
Piano is to quiet and sometimes too fast. Don't like this tempo.
