The Cologne New Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra plays the 1st movement of Sergej Rachmaninoff's String Quartet No.1, arranged for string orchestra and conducted by Volker Hartung.
Rachmaninov wrote two string quartets, but he composed only the first two movements for each of them. He wrote the first quartet in 1890 as a highly gifted, 17-year-old student at the Moscow Conservatory, where his outstanding talent as a pianist and composer was recognized. The 1st movement, a romance, is an enchanting little work: charming, melancholic and harmoniously interesting. Immediately one recognizes the specifically broad melodic style that characterizes his work throughout his life. Certainly it was inspired by Tchaikovsky, the great role model of Rachmaninov.
The second movement, the scherzo, which is reminiscent of a Ukrainian folk dance, is also magical.
How admirable the 17-year-old composer designs his own musical language and transports it into the modern age of the 20th century! He successful defended and maintained his specifically Russian, romantic melodic style against the influences of Stravinsky and the radical twelve-tones around Arnold Schönberg.

Die Junge Philharmonie Köln und Dirigent Volker Hartung spielen den ersten Satz von Sergej Rachmaninoff's charmantem Streichquartett Nr.1, arrangiert für Streichorchester, perfekt aufgenommen von Holger Siedler vom THD-Studio, Dormagen in der klangvollen Akustik der Wallfahrtskirche St.Odilia in Gohr.
Rachmaninoff schrieb zwei Streichquartette, jedoch komponierte er nur jeweils die ersten beiden Sätze. Das erste Quartett schrieb er 1889 als hochbegabter, 17-jähriger Student am Moskauer Konservatorium, wo man seine überragende Begabung als Pianist und Komponist erkannte.
Der 1. Satz, eine Romanze, ist ein bezauberndes kleines Werk: charmant, melancholisch und harmonisch interessant. Sofort erkennt man den spezifisch breiten melodischen Stil, den sein Werk lebenslang auszeichnet. Sicherlich wurde es von Tschaikowsky inspiriert, dem großen Vorbild Rachmaninoff's. Wie bewundernswert der 17-jährige Komponist seine eigene Musiksprache entwirft und in die Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts transportiert, wie er seine spezifisch russische, romantische Melodik gegen die Einflüsse von Strawinsky und die radikalen Zwölftöner um Arnold Schönberg verteidigt und beibehält!
Zauberhaft ist auch der zweite Satz, das Scherzo, das an einen ukrainischen Volkstanz erinnert.
