@@alexh8613 You are correct, but he had her beat. At the end of the clip he mentioned "if you don't have the cards you don't have the cards, but a look at how happy she is." but when Chandler and Joey go to reach for the cards he dives to stop them. He more than likely had 4 of a kind to start.

This was a terrific line, because It shows that Joey is a little slow on the uptake, without completely Flanderizing him into a total idiot like the show does in later seasons. After all, he was smart enough to both fold and push away from the table with the rest of the group.

Early years Friends had a kind of cinematic quality in those moments where it knew the story it wanted to tell. Big shows have so many episodes that it can't all be plot, but someone on this site made a playlist that was the entire show chopped up into just the bits of their relationship that made any forward progress and it was nice seeing it all stapled together coherently.

Ross definitely had the cards. That was very kind of him.

Yeah, asking for 1 card and calling her final bet means he either had a straight, flush, straight flush, or even royal flush. 4 of a kind is a possibility as well, though asking for a card will never do anything for your hand. Only the last 3 options can beat her hand, and naturally are at even longer odds to get than her full house, but stranger things have happened.

No he didn't. You can see Ross's cards for a split second, and nothing he had or exchanged would have beaten a full house. He was raising with nothing to give Rachel a big win.

@@AL-si4eo Well, he could have asked for 4 cards to get 4 of a kind, but yeah you're right. we see 4 of his cards. We see 3, K, 6, Q. So regardless of what the last card is and if he threw that one or any of the ones we saw he couldn't beat her. Though given the rules they are playing, his last card needed to be either a K or Q to have the J's or better to open. So the best he could possibly have is 3 K or Q.

@@LucianDevine Not exactly. It's jacks or better. If he opened, he has to have at least a pair of jacks. So he is not drawing to a straight, flush, or straight flush - most games would let you split openers, but you clearly put the opener to the side. He doesn't do that. If he has quads, a discard and draw won't help his hand, but might give the impression he has 2 pair, instead of a made hand (straight, flush) when he doesn't draw. That way if she had 2 pair with a good top pair, or trips, she bets. 2 pair or trips does not bet into a made hand, unless she is sure he is bluffing. You improve your chances of action with the discard and draw. He probably had 2 pair and drew a full house. If he had, say, aces up, and draws an ace, or aces and kings, and draws a king, his Full house MUST be higher than hers. Or he had quads. She almost certainly drew to trips.

I don’t really care for this show, but David Schwimmer is a fine actor. He made clear to us, without words, that he was folding the better hand, by showing in his eyes that his feelings for Rachel were winning out over his desire to win. Since only the boys (and us) know about those feelings at this point, it’s still believable (to us) that the girls didn’t “get it”. Schwimmer really knew how to play what might be a very tricky moment.

Well no matter how much he loved her, the outline of the story was about their incompatibility. Joey on the other hand was like a breath of fresh air in Rachel's life and therefore some assume it to be a great relationship.

i recently watched it for me it felt like a time travel now when i see old rachel,joey,ross it feels weird in my head as i got connected so much with their young faces and performances. kinda feel sad too that they are no more like they used to in the show , future generations will also likely watch it cause its timeless and every scene works till today. i love this show.

I didn't watch the first season when it first aired but when it was shown again leading up to season 2 it was this episode and this scene that got me hooked on it. Rachel was so endearing here.

This couple ended up falling out from grace in the eyes of a lot of people in the years after the show ended, to the point that people ask themselves why anyone would root for them in the first place. Not remembering that the "first place" was made out of moments like this one.

With so many memorable scenes in FRIENDS, this one is an exceptional one.

He loves her, he really loves her, how he loves her laughing face, he feels relieved and his heart yearns for her joy. This is the love that we cannot explain, then we offer it free of charge and without hesitation.

Just look at the way they are staring at each other 💕

The love that Ross gives Rach, is exactly the same that i gave to my ex.

This is one of my fave episodes of Friends. Ross once again proving his love for Rachel. Joey & Chandler rushing to see the cards so hilarious.

This is my favourite episode in whole friends ! Love the bonding between friends ❤️❤️

I watched this with my friends when it aired. I was in love with my "Rachel" who was part of our group. I felt like Ross a lot during this season. Ross was luckier than I was. But I still like the show and this scene a lot.
