Plug in tuning boxes from brands such as HDI and Racechip are seen as a quick and easy way to increase performance for your vehicle. I test a Racechip piggyback diesel tuning box fitted to my Mercedes W205 C220D on a DYNO to see if it gives the BHP and TORQUE gains claimed.
A total 12 runs were performed for complete accuracy and all results were constant. Your results may vary.

For the people who like to know: It's interrupts the voltage signal coming from the common rail pressure sensor and forwards a higher or lower value depending on the chosen setting. The ECU bumps up the demand of the pump a.k.a. pressure because it's sees a lower value from the sensor. Now because the pressure is slightly higher and the duration of the injection is still original ECU, the end result is still a higher volume being injected in said duration of injection time resulting in a higher bang. And since cars are always tuned from factory for balanced power and pollution setting. You can get away with adding that little bit of fuel without getting in to trouble.
Very informative video. There's a distinct lack of science of results on these boxes so, it's great to see a before and after dyno run, much like you would after an actual remap.

RC relies on their name and German quality heritage, which as of lately has become questionable due to pressure of making profit.
Ive had a Racechip on my 2014 Audi A6 TDI. Purchased in 2018, (now 2023). While I do notice a difference it's not the same as a tune. No problems with the RC and I purchased another for a friends vehicle. Again, he enjoyed the performance gains. System spoofs the sensors and offers more trq than HP. Easy to install and remove. Overall OK but not what is claimed on HP at all. Also, at the higher RPM's I also didn't notice any improvement.
Initially when I got my RC, i didn't feel i noticed too much increase, it took my a while to notice. I contacted RC customer support via email and explained that I felt it was not giving me the power i expected. They sent me an update to install and i have to say i really do notice when it is turned on. On highest setting it always feels like the turbo is raring to kick in. I usually drive with it set to 4. It definitely picks up quicker than without it. I've had mine over 2 years now and hate driving with it off. Expensive, yes. But so glad i bought one.

I installed on my Mercedes CLS550 about a year ago. More power, better response and very reliable. I do not know how much more power, but the Mustang and Hemi people are trying to catch me.
Fitted one to a turbo diesel i30 Hyundai. Definitely made a reasonable difference. The increased mpg on the trip computer was way out but measuring the mpg myself it gained 1 or 2 mpg which isn't much but considering the extra power it was a win win. Ran it for 50k miles and it never caused any issues.

When we dyno piggybacks, we notice each subsequent run the car bleeds off any additional power until it is back at stock levels. You get increased boost, but we always see an accompanying closure of throttle, pulling timing, dumping fuel, etc.
I used to have Tdi tuning bix on my fird transit Custom van, when it was brand new, 3 years later on a way home engine made horrible noises so I removed the box and opted for proper remap, and what a difference it made, day and night, as you stated it does a tittle bit but no where near to what they claim at least on diesel vehicles, so from my experience don’t waist your money on these boxes but go for remap.
Would this cause any parts to wear quicker?
I have been driving an Audi A4 with a race chip for 2 years. I don't know what dyno no. would be, but it is much faster than it was without the chip. I have also been looking at what RC can do with other similar engines.. I saw that a VW GTI gets more gains than a Golf R would with a race chip. It makes sense that if an engine is already turn to high output, the gain from RC will be less that an engine that is less tuned. I am sure I will put a Race Chip in very turbo car that I am going to get.

I got one on my Civic 9 1.6 diesel. I observed a gain in torque, but not in power. The drive is better for acceleration, and mileage is better (4l /100 km on road at speed of 100 km/h, 5.5 l/100 to 6l/100 km at speed 135 km/h on highway with 4 persons and fully luggage load)
Does this void your warranty
How's it been holding up?
Who cares if it does what it says, importantly - does it do it safely? Do they only tell the ECU that it's cold without telling the car anything else, (assuming there are any other parameters that the ECU needs to consider)?

To get towards the higher end of the potential power gains from a race chip you need to get rid of your Cats, improve the volume of cold air to the engine. I designed one for the first gen Mazda6S. It added 17whp and I think 12lbft. Not a ton, but it wasnt a powerful engine to begin with. They do work, but they have to be set up right and are nowhere near as good as a genuine tune set up for your particular car. That said, I have a dinan in my c300 cuz idc about hardcore power anymore. It's easier and less of a risk.
Anybody heard of Evolv Performance Chips?
I had one of these on an Audi A6 2.7tdi. I went in with my eyes open, I kinda expected it to do very little, as they work by basically putting a resister between the fuel rail and the ecu to manipulate the sensor reading. This ties in pretty much exactly with my own “butt dyno” findings. Race chip quoted an increase from 177bhp to 220, which is total rubbish, but it did pull noticeably harder in the mid range. I guessed it increased the power by about 10bhp, and the mid range by a bit more than that. Basically, do they work? - sort of. Will you get a noticeable increase in power? - Power, probably not, mid range grunt, noticeable but not huge increase. Is the quoted increase total garbage? - absolutely. I think they simply quote the increase you typically get from a remap ( you know, one that directly effects turbo pressures..), and say that it what it will do… Is it a con? - yeah a little bit. They do work…ish, but I wouldn’t buy one again unless it was VERY cheap, and on a very cheap car it didn’t care much for. It could be “worth it” on a crappy golf diesel for the extra mid range, but I’m pretty much every other situation, I’d get a remap instead. I also wouldn’t touch one on a petrol motor, it’s just asking for trouble.

The Racechip is a small computer that reads the sensor data and changes it depending on the programmed map. (not only a resistor) It basically does the same as an ECU tune, just without touching/changing the ECU. There are also different mappings for each mode, which you have to slowly work out (mine had 22 maps and when the engine threw an error, i set it one back down). The benefit of an ECU tune is, that you can do way more and it will be for your engine specifically/get the most out of your engine)

@@chimei-tekinaneko8318 I’m sorry, its not a small computer at all. It’s a takes a single reading from one sensor ( fuel rail pressure), modifies that reading and feeds the adjusted rail pressure to the existing ECU. The cars ECU then changes other parameters that is can directly effect the “fix” the issue as it sees it by adding more air to compensate ( turning the boost up). The higher end race chip products have a Bluetooth enabled computer in them, but they still only effect that single parameter, which is in effect a potentiometer to effect the resistance on the sensor of the fuel rail. You can achieve the same results by placing a 80 cent resistor across the connector pins on the sensor ( we have done it..)

@@martjackson a resistor has a constant offset, the racechip is in fact a computer that has a (programmable) variable offset, which changes with the rpm.
Hi, I brought a cheap golf 5 tdi gt, running problems, turned out a chip box had been plugged in, 🔌locked the ecu, I removed it and it was fine,
Finally: it is reported that the RC merely increases the fuel rail pressure - sometimes to dangerous levels!
Racechip do say to run the car for a week before using the most powerful map to allow the chip to learn.

no matter the car you have and what figures the car maker states the numbers will always be different from another of the same car there is variables like how much friction there is how much flow of air and exhaust there is and many more things
So these chips give it a decent torque boost, got it
You want to try a dtuk trust me makes a big difference
Do these work if you already have a stage1 Economy remap?

No I wouldn’t fit, these are tuned against your factory settings, if it’s already had a remap I’d say away and if you want more power just get a more power based tune

Any suggestions how can unplug my tuning chip on my car ?
@ZER0Y0N

Yeah pretty simple, just locate the big box and follow the wires which will have connector blocks on, remove the connector and plug back into the original connector
The box claim is compared to fabric stock claim I guess so then its not to bad.
Tbh it sounds, to me, your merc allready had a little optimization in the past. Maybe a little higher temperature from the diesel burning elements and a bit more air? Because if it truly had stock figures (on paper) then the end results with the racechip would be completely accurate... So to me it does work. Allright these engines do always perform a little better with the right fuel and oils. But not this much right? Especially torquewise. But I could be completely wrong.

Hi there and thanks for your comment, as mentioned in the conclusion after performing some further research prior to making this video it seems that these cars are actually putting out higher figures than mercedes claim with many owners of the same model reporting similar figures prior a remap. hope this clarifies!

What I've heard these boxes do is adjusting the values of boost, airflow and fuel to the ecu making it overboost and overfuel. While it does infact increase performance, it does so quite inefficiently
@markmarlowe3128

well, if they were so inefficient, i guess you'll use more gas for the same mileage, but in fact, you're using less gas if you're driving the same way, so, i guess it does improve the airflow/fuel/combustion, and just deliver more torque/power
There's things like extreme fuel rail pressures that others have found
These tuning boxes only add maybe 20hp at most, I find that it's much more beneficial on small cars with 1.0l engines.

Turbocharged 1.0 engines perhaps. On a normally aspirated small engine, these tuning boxes will do absolutely nothing.

A friend tried the "simple" racechip in a Ford Focus MK3.5 1.0. He felt it like flying. It really gives extra performance. He advises me to get one (I will probably go for the RS). Another friend who has the 1.5 182 bhp MK4 said that it easily gained 20 bhp and the car became more aggressive.
