RACE and REVENGE - A Metal Gear Solid 5 Retrospective

Ойындар

Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid, has said that there is a single word... a single theme that can summarize each mainline game in the Metal Gear Solid saga. With that, I decided to look at each game in the series exclusively through the lens of their respective theme. Today, we will be looking at the single word/theme that summarizes Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom PainThat word is "race" and “revenge”.

Looking back at it, Skullface was the deepest MGS antagonist. He was both cartoonish (agent of chaos who wants to justify anarchy) and non-cartoonish (the torture of chico, the rape of paz, the disregard for the consequences of war to further his power). Him being written as someone whose interpretation of the Boss' will is based on the hatred of the language of the most successful colonizers is both brilliant and brave on Kojima's part as an artist who pushes message across through his medium of choice. MGSV wasn't perfect but it really pushed all the boundaries. It saddens me that Konami couldn't see how much of the groundwork Kojima did (his refinements in direction in writing, the impressive power of the FOX engine) could have made Konami into a pioneer in the upcoming future of video games. It saddens me that all of us fans deal with this phantom pain That being said...Death Stranding next, Max? :D

I think all of the shit that happened around this game, it was supposed to happen. Like it's a closely guarded secret, and making it set off ALL alarms. However, if you haven't figured it out for yourself? Luckily we all know and sought the guidance of an obsessive autistic philosophical investigator named Max Derrat.

A lot of people were disappointed that they didn’t see Big Boss’ big fall. But Venom Snake’s very existence was that fall. He allowed Venom Snake to be used as his tool and puppet, not unlike how the Government used the Boss in such a way that Big Boss despised. He could’ve told Venom the truth as soon as they’d escaped and let him choose whether to willingly pretend to be Big Boss but he left it until what was probably the last possible moment to be straight with him, and even then he didn’t really give the medic a choice to stop.

Playing through it again, I really appreciate how dark the tone is. There’s a strong feeling of impending doom over the whole story, and pretty much every character will be dead by the end of the saga - the real tragedy though is that many won’t know the truth, like the full extent of Skull Face’s duplicity, Zero being unable to reconcile his mistakes, and the fact that half of Big Boss’ legend isn’t even his own. I think it’s a good story when you step away from it.

This is deep, I actually cried a little for Venom. I felt the pain, the agony, and the hurt he must have felt. I genuinely struggled within myself as I found myself defending the actions of Big Boss, then denying that Big Boss would do that to a comrade like Venom, hating Big Boss and wanting to be better, to actually accepting it all and not wearing my avatar face in the game thinking that I should fulfill my duty and not break my disguise so my mission to Big Boss is fulfilled. Venom Snake sacrificed everything for Big Boss, willingly, and Big Boss cared for him. Big Boss wanted to see his face one last time before they changed it, was worried about him potentially not being able to carry the name... This game is amazing.

It's the end of an era, but it had to end eventually. Not even a series this big can last forever, but it leaves an impression unlike anything else. Pretty crazy how Kojima had no interest in developing more MGS games after 2, and he didn't seem too thrilled about leading that project. But, he kept at it regardless, and it all led to this game, MGS V. The ending always gets me when Venom's dialogue is also speaking to the audience, and it's basically Kojima giving a heartfelt thanks. I'm really love how it ended on such a great note as far as his perspective on the series and the game being awesome despite the madness behind the scenes. Appreciate this vid, you did it justice my good man.

Regarding Skullface's plan to give everyone nukes. If he views peace as the absence of war he knows even one madman pushing the button led to humanity's extinction, peace would be achieved either way because the fighting would and we weren't worth saving anyway.

What I like about the cutscene of Venom realizing his identity is that when he punches the mirror, it's his only act of giving into revenge. He let's his pent-up emotions all out with one final punch towards not his own reflection but that of Big Boss. And right afterward, he walks away into the shadows, into the final boss of Metal Gear 1, to fulfill his duty for Big Boss and accept his fate.

Uploaded masterpieces at 4AM here in Australia as I was about to sleep! Also, don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened Max. You could talk about Revengeance. If I had to guess, IN MY OPINION, the one word theme for Revengeance? It would be change.

  • @tinaherr3856

    @tinaherr3856

    Жыл бұрын

That would be an interesting video idea. "Change" could work as a one word theme, but I have thought of another word. "Identity", or a variation of it Several character in Rising deal with their own identities, through the story and the songs. Raiden embraces his past identity of Jack the Ripper, but doesn't completely fall under it, instead merging parts of it with his own ideals and morals. Mistral also deals with identity, finding a cause, a purpose in life. In both her interaction with Raiden, and her song's lyrics, this is explored. Sam was beaten by Armstrong, believing his previous ideals to be weak based on the fight, and working under Desperado afterwards. His song also includes the lyrics "Losing my identity, wondering have I gone insane".

When it comes to the ending i agree with most of your interpretation although i don't agree with some other interpretations you did becausd i have my own and the fact that in my opinion it is an incomplete ending, it really lives up to imagination of what it could have been. @Max Derrat As someone who's played only MGS4 and 5, your entire retrospective of the series was such a thrill to go through that it makes me wish they ported the whole collection so I could experience everything they offered first hand (to newer consoles since I'm not in a position to delve into PC gaming as of now). Too bad that'd be considered generous by Konami's current standards. I won't lie, it was your most profound gaming moment video that brought you into my interest for the past year or so. And I'm honestly glad I took the plunge into what I believe is some of the most introspective content made on this platform. Every upload's intrigued me in some way, furthering my perception on what truly drives and defines humanity's behavior. The cultural, societal, and the psychologic aspects of what manifests, guides, and smothers the human will. It honestly helps me derive better characterization for a story I've thought of writing from time to time. It's thanks to content creators like yourself that I've grown some fondness for storytelling, some sense of direction on what I want to do in the future really. It may seem like I'm rambling about some aspirations I have nowadays but to briefly conclude, don't stop being on KZread. Your work has made an incredible impact on many more people than myself, I'm certain of that. Something about this analysis brought to mind memories of my father telling me how he would fiddle with the tuner set of the soviet AM radio they had in eastern Europe to find the right frequency to listen to Radio Free Europe... There can't be a mistake that I find an analogy in what English, as a language, brought to these people listening behind the iron curtain. It united them - gave them hope and ultimately freedom. There has to be reason why Kojima set this theme in this time and place with Race & Language, and parallels of freedom, - of personal and state sovereignty.... Good shit Max, outstanding work as always.

The series is my favorite media, art, creation of all time, and still inspires me as an artist- I love to draw. I have been playing since the originals. I was 8 years old when I got the OG Resident Evil 2 when it released in 1998 as a Christmas gift, and was completely hooked, inspired, refreshed, and immersed and still am to this day. Metal Gear Solid also inspires me, as it is my #2 favorite series just below Resident Evil. Metal Gear Solid is sacred and revered to me; a part of me. A little bit late, but here are some things that I wanted to elaborate on with some of the points you made: 1. In regards to why Paz would be captured and tortured at a Cypher facility, wasn't it implied that Skull Face had gone rogue by then? Given that he still has control of XOF during the events of Phantom Pain, he still had a great deal of control over some portions of Cypher before his assassination attempt on Zero. He tortured Paz so that he can find Zero's location. 2. I'm glad that you brought up the ambiguity with Huey's involvement with what happened with MSF and DD. While you did bring up a good point with how Chico could have told Skull Face about MSF's location, it's important to bear in mind that Huey was going behind Big Boss's back way before Chico ran away from MSF to find Paz. Huey went out of his way to invite the IAEA to Mother Base even when both Big Boss and Kaz agreed to not meet their demands for an inspection. Since the inspection happened so soon after Chico's message was received, it makes no sense that Skull Face could possibly somehow man a large-scale ambush that quickly, while also knowing that Big Boss would come for Chico. The fact that Huey alone was taken away by XOF during the attack, and most damning of all, the fact that Strangelove had left Mother Base so soon before the actual XOF attack shows that a lot of what happened was premediated. I personally feel that Skull Face had planned the attack on Mother Base for a long time now, and Paz's capture and subsequent reveal of Zero's location was the nail in the coffin. That, and Huey's actions in Chapter 2 which were definitely proven to be true by Kaz, only help reinforce the fact that Huey was a genuine villain. It also helps contextualize his eventual suicide with Ocelot's dialogue about him in the end. Personally, I think the more important person to discuss in this video should have been Kaz instead. Huey was easily shown to be a garbage human being, Quiet's story showed a story of redemption and love, and Liquid's/Psycho-Mantis's story helped contextualize his hatred for his father and his plans for revenge in MS1. While the game does leave the tiniest bit of doubt for Huey and whether he was guilty or not, Kaz feels the most suspicious. Huey was technically correct during his torture in that Kaz WAS an agent of Cypher aka Zero during the events of Peace Walker. He also worked with Zero again after the attack on Mother Base to protect and watch over Big Boss during his coma. While I don't think his desire for revenge was fake, I feel that his revenge was focused mainly on Skull Face and the Cypher organization he partially controls. Not to mention how Kaz might have been supported by Zero the same way he did in PW by financing DD and providing them the money and means to deal with Skull Face and support Venom. It would explain why Big Boss decided to leave him and DD/MSF behind after the attack, why Ocelot assassinates Miller before MGS1, and why Ocelot subtly guides and manipulates solid snake throughout the series. Even if you end our discussion of Metal Gear with this video, I do hope you can discuss a little bit about Kaz's motivations throughout the series.

That was beautiful Max. There’s something really special about iconic bad ass special agents/super soldiers who make the impossible seem possible. We watched Solid Snake grow and become the good hearted hero that he has created to be, and Big Boss also live long and realize that fighting the world is pointless because you only ended up losing yourself and everything that truly matters to you in the end. Then we also recently had James Bond finally find a reason to fight, die, and live on that truly mattered to him after all the pain, betrayals, heartache and loss that he had experienced in his long action packed journey. Heroic bad ass Iconic Legends who saved the world against ruthless evil people time and time again and inspired vast generations of men in the process. “Heroes never truly die, their legend lives on forever”.

As I was listening to this video and before you mentioned the word that would describe the whole series, I had the exact same though of the word "will". Everything in this series makes you question what, if anything, are you willing to fight for and why. And I think in each game ending but especially in the 4rth that ethos is very well summarized. It's not about enforcing you change on the world and others, but instead to respect others will while fighting for your own. So many parts of this game in that sense remind me of the matrix and the oracle. Memorable bits where the context of the world and the context of the authors morality and narrative align in a moment to give you as truthful an insight as they believe in. I'm a huge fan of a lot of your videos and I work as an artist in this entertainment industry. I think people like you are now, more than ever, necessary in the trenches of video game creation and experiences. I would love to one day see that happen!

I like MGS5 and always have. But so many things could've been done. 4th wall breaking things, survival mechanics in the open world where getting spotted and injured would be a problem, having to find food to heal (like in MGS3) would be cool, etc. Having Venom Snake be in different big strange situations, maybe with Mantis, etc. Just a field for so many opportunities.

The way I saw or how I played MGSV was that the Boss (Venom) was himself during the game, a Medic, a helper, a loyal soldier. Even though Naked's image was upfront the choices made by Venom was his own, the guy even kept pictures of his soldiers, the love of his life, took memories of building Mother Base because he wanted to. Instead of turning the children into soldiers, he just let them do basic jobs, let them be educated, a chance for a normal life would Naked do this? The guy even love his soldiers because he even turned them into ash and brought them to his missions, Venom could have easily killed Huey, Quiet, and Skull Face even but no, Venom to the core had the will to keep on keeping on and chose to be the Phantom because Big Boss knew he is the best among all of them and Venom trusted Big Boss the same.

Thank you for this profound masterpiece series on the Metal Gear franchise. It says a great many things I believe many of us feel about both MGSV and the MGS series but perhaps had not put into words. We will carry the Boss's legacy, the spirit and will of what she, and the Metal Gear franchise, stands for. "I raised you and loved you. I've given you weapons, taught you techniques, endowed you with knowledge. There's nothing left for me to give you. All that's left for you to take is my life." -The Boss
