Race Against The Rain and Surprise Addition To The Homestead! | DIY Family Off-Grid House Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#DIY #offgrid #house #build #homestead
Hey, Y'all! We are Justin and Lil, plus four kids and one on the way. Just over a year ago, we moved our RV to 18 acres of raw land, built a solar power system, and now we are DIY building our Off-Grid house together as a family. In this video, we race against the rain while tying up loose ends and taping the zip sheathing and flashing tape. Then we take a quick break from the build to rescue a beautiful peach tree, which we hope will provide for generations to come!
Once taped up, the zip sheathing seams must be rolled tightly with the Zip sheathing tape roller until little Zs appear in the tape to ensure proper adhesion and a weather tight seal.
This means Justin is up and down the ladder hundreds of times in one day. Zip sheathing taping day definitely counts as leg day, "which Justin never skips, cough."
We almost finished taping, but we took a quick break from the off grid house build to rescue a 4 year old peach tree. Some friends are moving across the country, and they committed the unforgiveable offense of planting a tree in the ground in their backyard on post. Living on a military base is like living under the most draconian HOA, so they were given a choice to cut the tree down or dig it out. The peach tree was incredibly fruitful last year, so they offered it to us, and we decided to bring Peachy to Wild Berry Woods Homestead.
It's the worst time of year to Transplant, and it took many hours to dig up the 10 foot tall tree, but we are praying that it will survive the move. We hope to have grandchildren and great-grandchildren leaving peach pits all over the land. We don't normally plan to take time away from the house build, but we think this investment will be totally worth our while! After all, our dream is to build a multigenerstional, self-sufficient Off-Grid homestead!

    Hey folks, hope you're all doing well and Lil's feeling ok. Great to see your daughter learning new skills as part of the build, it's good that the kids will know they had a part in building the family home, makes it more special. Fingers crossed for the peach tree surviving and thriving, will be a great addition to the homestead! Have a great week all and stay safe.

    I couldn't tell from the video how deep you planted the tree, but those top roots should only be a couple of inches below dirt. The root flair should be at ground level. Speaking from experience because I have killed several by planting too deep. Better to shallow than too deep. Also stake and tie. Several good videos on KZread how to plant trees. Good luck.

    A long sleeve preferably white tee is much better than working shirtless on those really hot sunny days imo. It keeps the sun off your skin and helps reflect the light that causes that baking sensation.

    Question about the zip sheeting? Why wasn’t it installed horizontal? Adds more structural support doesn’t it. I work in new construction and sheeting (not zip) is never installed vertical.

  • @DIY_or_DIE

    @DIY_or_DIE

    8 күн бұрын

    It can be installed horizontal or vertical. The structural integrity just depends on how many nails you use. If you install blocking for horizontal panels along all the long edges, than it will use the same # of fasteners as a vertical board that goes from bottom to top plate. There are some good explanations on KZread about this topic. Think about your typical 6" O.C. around the edges.
