Raag Bhupali, Jugalbandi Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia & Son of Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, Rahul Sharma

Soul to Soul - Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia in Jugalbandi with Rahul Sharma, live-in-concert 25 June 2017 at the Zuiderstrandtheater in The Hague. Relive this extraordinary jugalbandi concert featuring Living legend Pandit Chaurasia (bansuri), Rahul Sharma (santoor), Bhavani Shankar (pakhawaj), Vijay Ghate (tabla), Rohini Sahajpal (tanpura).
Together with Rasique Music School Rotterdam, DesiYUP organized the biggest Indian jugalbandi classical concert in 2017 with the legendary Padma Vibhusan Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Our wish was to recreate the magic of the Call of The Valley albums produced by the masters Shiv-Hari. But in the last week before the concert we heard that Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was unable to perform for us due to serious health problems.
We received a doctor’s report stating that Pandit Sharma was not allowed to travel abroad for a good six weeks. With only one week prior to the concert we only had two options; the first option was to cancel this concert and wait for the recovery of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, but this matter was so fragile and the prospects weren’t looking that great that we decided to come up with a solid alternative.
The second option was to request Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia to perform this jugalbandi concert with the son of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Rahul Sharma, since he learned to play santoor from his father. Now, this concert became an example of the strong guru-shisya-parampara within the Indian classical music tradition. Knowledge is passed down from one generation to the other. And in this concert Rahul Sharma was the only possible replacement for his father.

So hard to hear the great Hariprasad Chiaurasia here. I was first introduced to him through the Venu album with Zakir Hussain. I later saw him live in US in the mid-90s and again in 2007 in Mumbai. The second time, he was already advanced in age, and his stamina wasn't quite what it had been in earlier days. The phrases were a bit shorter, missing were the long, winding phrases, gone were the long-held notes that seemed to flow into eternity, gone was that indescribably rich tone of the bansuri that at its quietest occupied the space between sound and silence, simultaneously there and not there. Here again, another 10 years later, the inexorable ravages of age are unforgiving. You hear a mind and soul that want to communicate beautiful music, but the hands and lungs no longer want to cooperate... Hariprasad has left a great mark on not just classical Indian music, but on all music. Hats off to this great master.

The video should be cut into 4 part because when people listen this video they will find the Alaap part which is not good for listing everytime...the next madhayam laya music with pakhwaj is good but when people want to skip the Allap part they will skip directly to mid portion but it is also not good as pakhwaj and tabla together or pakhwaj alone...I have shared it with many one but nobody was interested... even in KZread comments section😬😁. Long Live Indian Culture. Good Bless You All.

Divine sounds. In the absence of Senior Maestro also the rhythm of Santoor & other instruments have been in tune with the Veteran Flute Pandit ji's out of the World performance. It is tranquility & tranquility. Thanks for sharing

Pt Hariji ko sadar naman. At this advanced age he has so brilliantly played Raag Bhupali no words. Also Rahul Sharma accompanying him with this beautiful jugalbandi along with Vijay Ghate ji and Pt Bhavani Shankar 🙏🙏

The pakhawaj accompaniment (very uncommon with flute and santoor) from the great maestro won my hart, the moment it started playing while the whole concert was so very pleasant.
