R9 290X vs. 2022 | Tales From The GPU Archive

Benchmarking the AMD Radeon R9 290X against 12 popular and recent games on an average gaming PC in 2022.
Ten years since the UHD standard was announced by the Consumer Electronics Association, and it still seems like the gold standard for visual fidelity in modern games. Imagine how it looked in 2012!
In this video, I’m reminiscing on games from 2012 onwards, and seeing just how good the early adopters of 4K PC gaming had it, or whether they had maybe jumped the gun.

Not being funny mate, but your style and quality were exceptional out of the gate. So much so that I thought you must have been a seasoned KZreadr who fancied doing this on the side for giggles. So while it's not "changed that much" that's because it already set a high benchmark. The fact you already had the fun "Impact Reveal" sting at the start gave your videos a lovely sense of familiarity. Oh, and I've owned this card. Sadly, my CEX experience on this was that it was great... but the last 512mb of RAM was corrupt so when it hit near the VRAM limit it would die. Which was pretty miserable because I found it to be a surprisingly decent card... if power hungry. Now I'm sporting a EVGA RTX 2060 that I got on Prime for just £212 new. It's fits and suits my old and trusty Dell Precision T3610 to a tea. 🙂

It was the card from my first own built PC so kept it - and it was such a beast, remember it playing games at 4K 60 on medium/high settings low AA (older titles from it's era of course not a chance now) I also remember it being a brilliant room heater in winter.

I had the R9 290 version of that ASUS Directcu ii until 2019. They are really nice cards. I sold it recently for $80 USD. My only complaint about the card was the temps. It ran about 85C most of the time, and in the summer was at 90C when gaming most of the time. I ran 1080p with high settings in most of the games I played. I was tempted to get the X version over the regular 290, but I just couldn't be bothered with the little difference in performance. I also ran across some articles about BIOS flashing a 290X bios to the card, which would unlock the cores on the GPU and turn it into a 290X. I thought about it, but never did it. I did see people do it, though.

@@kurzschussbenchmarks Oh definitely it can look off on a 1080p monitor if you know what to look for, that's true. But from a different side, you can get 900p monitors practically free from many places or dirt cheap.I regularly see them go on sale for $20 online and are given away on a regular basis. It all depends on what you are willing to settle for. Lower details may be what some people settle for, but it definitely makes things look ugly. I guess it all depends on the person. I used to have a 768p TV ,900p,1080p and 4k monitors for my benchmarks on my old channel and I definitely notice the difference between 900p on a 1080p monitor vs Native 900p, on a Native 900p it feels almost indistinguishable from 1080p unless you look at them both beside each other. Also if someone is willing to hang on to an R9 290x in 2022 , they are probably used to lower resolutions on their monitor. It all depends. But you do make a good point about 900p Native vs Scaled

A lot of people will want to see old gpu's running Darktide, once that game comes out at the end of next month. I suggest trying to get some benchmarks and optimization tips out within the first days. It's a very intensive game because of all the things happening on the screen. To run it just well enough that the fps stays smooth throughout, is a really important sweet spot. I bet people are even willing to use ultra performance fsr just to experience it with good fps. Finding out the most important graphics settings will be super helpful. I do hope the beta server issue affecting fps will be fixed.

I’d hazard a guess that it will still have the same lousy performance in Halo Infinite 😡 I might do a follow up to my NimeZ video in the new year, but I’m buried in CPUs at the moment, and can’t afford to go GPU shopping right now!

Go for it. And compare fury x vs r9 290x vs Gtx980ti!!! That would be awesome. No need for 780ti. Card is gone due driver support. Such a shame. Nvidia knows how to keep money flow.

Quite possibly. There's an explanation at 1:20 - I initially tried to OC the card into a 390X, but temps got higher than I was comfortable with. I used some of the capture footage from the OC runs but the data is from stock.

Haven't tried it yet. There's apparently a workaround to run the game in DX11, which would ofc be necessary on GCN 1, but I don't know any more than that.

300w is sort of an maximum you can expect with things like furmark, 200-220w during 100% load in games is the usual. You can get it as low as 160w with undervolding (provided good quality chip ofc)

These R9s were crap when launched - too hot, too power hungry, under performing for the heat and power. That's why they are so cheap on ebay nowadays - no-one wants them because they are hot, slow and produce a big electricity bill. Oh, and AMD drivers are shit for these old R9s.
