R1200RT Final Drive Pivot Point Maintenance
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The BMW RT and GS motorcycles are shaft driven, with a "final drive" unit which drives the rear wheel. That final drive pivots from the end of a swing arm, which itself pivots from the bike frame. The final drive pivot point has two bearings, one a sealed bearing and the other an open roller bearing. Greasing these bearings and the area around them is important because water intrusion and corrosion are possible from riding in rain, etc. In this video I'll show how to remove the final drive so you can grease this pivot point and avoid later trouble. This would be an occasional maintenance item.

This is the best FD removal vid I've ever seen. Thanks very much John.

Glad it was helpful!
1001 Thanks. I have the BMW repair manual, but watching your detailed video made it clearer. The drive shaft on my 2015 R1200RT is NOT secured at the front with a clip -- the whole shaft floats. So I could not easily disengage the rear from the shaft by just dropping it. Easier to just pull the rear and check the needle bearing like you said. BTW, the BMW manual says the torque on that bearing stud is 145 Nm (107 ft-lbs)
Nice work, and some good tips.
Thanks for the video. A nice job to do on a rainy day in the garage indeed 🙂

It's funny--about halfway through this job it started getting hot in my garage. I opened the door to find that the sun had come out and it was a beautiful day! Fortunately I was able to hop on my Triumph while there was still daylight and take a spin.
Thank you very much, you make a very good job!
Thanks John
