Just learning about my Irish great grandfather and the atrocities the government of the country I was born in committed in Ireland. Started listening to the so called rebel songs, love this one, grace, doggy dew, come out you black and tans. They don't teach what happened this side of the sea. I've just started learning Gaelic as well, couple of days in on Duolingo as the brits tried to wipe out the beautiful Irish language.

I think as an American, it is just the idea that another country who is literally across a body of water, having the final say. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Traditionally women have been involved in Irish government and to a certain extent, Irish wars for centuries. My great great grandmother was what some might call a spy 1918-1919. She was an old woman at the time but would go into the village and watch what the auxiliaries were doing then report back to the Irish Republicans. Grace O'Malley was a symbol people rallied around during the revolution and features in this song. Some women actually donned a uniform and picked up arms and fought, in fact, as I understand it, a great many did. Ireland had for centuries been a pioneer in women's rights until the British got involved and even then did what they could when they could.
