If you're chemically addicted to a substance, it doesn't matter how much you are loved or how much you love another person. You literally can't stop. I speak from experience. It requires professional help. Even my mom and Dad, who I love more than anything in the world, can't stop my drinking. I need medical help.

Honestly, if such a thing were to happen to my dad, he'd have my back without doubt. I'd likely have even said, "Does this make you my cybernetic dad, now?" to try and cheer him up post-surgery. Also there's no wrong way to quit either. I tried for several years and what finally worked was decoupling the physical and psychological aspects of the addiction. (Didn't realize that's what I did at the time, but in hindsight it's clear.) Basically I started chewing to get me by when I couldn't smoke, and eventually chewed full time. Switched to snus pouches, then went to gum, then went from gum to regular gum and nicotine patches, and gradually reduced the patches until I was just chewing regular gum. And then since the regular gum was just gum, over time I stopped chewing that too. In retrospect I realized what happened is that by getting my nicotine from multiple different sources, and breaking that hand-to-mouth cycle, I was able to tackle the chemical dependency separate from the physical habit.

After listening to the last story I feel the need to share mine. I quit smoking over a year ago (more specific on January 1st 2023 at 6:20 pm). I smoked a whole pack of red Marlboro or Lucky Strike a day for almost 4 years. Quitting was hard, and honestly, recently I’ve been so stressed out that I’ve been thinking of smoking again. Addiction is something to not mess around with, is something you battle every day after you quit. If you are planning on quitting smoking, you can do it. The best day to quit was yesterday, but is never to late people. Stay strong!!

I quit smoking in May 2020 and I still have strong craving to smoke. Sadly, I still use smokeless tobacco, dip, and I'm finding it basically impossible to stop that. I run out and say that I'm not going to buy anymore, but within 1 to 3 hours I'm at the store buying more. I hate it. It's so much money being spit out. I go through 5 cans of dip in 7 to 12 days, roughly 1 can every 1 to 3 days depending on just how much I dip/how long I'm awake for. 5 cans is around $45. That's up to $135 or so a month I've even tried just keeping Altoids to keep in my mouth. I'm addicted to them now. I go through 2 cans every week or so, but it doesn't help me stop dipping. Don't start smoking, vaping, dipping, etc., just don't. It's not worth the money wasted. Not worth the medical issues down the road. It's not worth it at all.

My husband lost two fingers at work, and we were initially scared of how our kids would react. At first, he had a big bandage wrapped around his hand, so it was easy to say that Daddy had a big owie and we had to be careful around it. When the bandage came off, they were fascinated with the stubs. That lasted about a week. Now, it's just how Daddy is.

It’s also possible that he does care about his wife some, like most cheaters do (or at least about being able to ‘have’ her) and just was telling the affair partner that to make her feel good, so he could have his cake and eat it too. Cheaters often want both the cake and to eat the cake at the same time, and it’s possible the wife saw those texts and assumed that was his true thoughts.

It should turn off the wife completely from literally cloning the ex because otherwise she'd remind OP of the abuse and awful memories he had of said ex. Unless she did told her and she still did it anyways(or after she told her she started to stalk the ex)which doesn't help anything at all and even worsens it.

She's trying to BE the ex, like that character in "The Roommate", where she's stealing the protagonist's looks, her friends, her love and THEN the ex's life! I remembered watching CypherDen's video, where she was being creeped out by "Rose", who stalked her on almost EVERY socials that Cypher has, then stares at her with the creepiest smile, suggests to their group that they should go to Cypher's home, then wants to hug her during the animation presentation at the animation college. If THAT'S not super creepy, I dunno WHAT is!

My favorite cheater story so far was about this guy who, upon finding out about his wife's affair, started faking an affair of his own: returning home late, becoming distant, pretending to be on the phone all the time and being protective of it... this caused the wife to spiral out of control and obsess about him. He then pretended that things were returning to normal, only to later dump and ghost her, leaving only the divorce papers and the lawyer's contact behind, and sending evidence of the affair to everyone they knew.

I remember my dad nearly loosing his vision when I was younger and at the time it felt a lot like they might've just taken his eye if it was bad enough. I kept imagining that happening to my dad and how scared i was when they rolled him out to my mom and I. It's not nearly as severe and I can't imagine how utterly terrifying and helpless he must've felt nor how his kid must've felt But i'm glad to have my dad in any state so long as he's still truckin along in his optimistic and sweet way. I hope that guy's doing ok, surgeries like that are pretty rough.

the pen15 one reminded me of an old, old joke: there's a male nurse taking care of a guy, and as he's giving him his sponge bath he can't help but notice that his, ahem, part has the word "Wendy" tattooed on it. He's too shy to ask, so he asks another nurse, a very pretty and outgoing woman, to check in with the patient. A few minutes later she comes out of the patient's room and says: "the tattoo doesn't say 'Wendy,' it says 'Welcome to Jamaica, have a nice day.'"

Story 3: scenario 2 is worse. In the first case it's simply mental illness. Imposter syndrome maybe? She doesn't think she's good enough so she's trying to be your type I guess. Second scenario though doesn't come from a place of love. It would mean she's used OP for 10 years to get back at a bully or something stupid. Scenario 2 comes from hate and a disregard for the feelings of others

My dad suffered for seven years from cancer, starting when I was five. When I was six, they tried to explain to me what cancer was and that my dad was really, really ill, and might not have long to live anymore (he was given six months around that time. It was a losing battle but as I said, he stubbornly lived for seven more years). The cancer happened to no fault of his own and it didn't affect his face but there were several physical changes, then there was the medical treatment, daily shots given at home, surgeries... From the perspective of the child I used to be: Yes, looking at him and what cancer did to him was scary. But never because I was scared of him. But because I was scared for him. I loved my dad, I didn't want him to be sick and in pain, I didn't want him to be afraid, or to have surgery. On a side note, I've been an adult for a while and to this day, I'm glad I wasn't shielded from the disease. I knew what was going on and I understood what death was (by the time I was six, we had lost two dogs due to old age and my grandpa had drowned when I was four). Yeah, it was heard but there isn't an all-smiles-solution to a situation like this. If anything, give your children the chance to cherish your time together, as limited as it might be. And do not add deception and broken trust to the grief they'll eventually go through. Kids aren't dumb. Cancer can't be hidden, especially if it is terminal. "I can't play outside with you today because I feel sick today" is something that makes a kid sad but they'll understand. "Oh, no, I'm perfectly fine, you're imagining things, mommy/daddy is doing super well! I just don't come out and play with you because I'm too busy [as the kid hears it: have better things to do and don't want to]" will confuse and hurt the kid and they won't understand why you, despite being so healthy and being "lazy" on the couch all day, don't want to spend time with them. But back to the point: Very small children get confused or might even cry if a parent drastically changes their hair or shaves their beard. Being spooked by the physical damages from surgery is by far not as personal as it seems. If a parent is loving and caring, the child only needs to be reminded that you are, indeed, this loving and caring parent. They'll never see you as a monster, they'll just be sad for you because you aren't well. That's something you can't shield them from (and shouldn't) but it also shows your child that love can come in many different forms and sometimes, being worried or sad is one of those forms. Don't shield your kid from loving you through empathy. Love and care are so much more than smiles and rainbows, especially when the smiles are forced.

Story two: I can relate to OP's feelings. After a quarter century of critical care nursing there are plenty of things I just cannot unsee, and dream about far too often. Based on conversations with my brother, who spent thirty plus years in the RCMP, this may be a problem shared by all essential service providers. "Thank you for your service," is what we hear as we retire, but even after twenty years off the job I still dream about the burn cases. I wonder if OP will be dreaming about a parade of genetalia. We definitely don't get paid enough for that.

I grew up with a grandfather that had been severely burned and had skin graft scars. When I was little I cared more about him hurting than the scars. They don’t bother me at all. I saw him, not the physical him with scars, but the true person. It taught me a great deal about seeing beyond the surface as I grew up. I miss him more than words. The beauty of unconditional love like that is that simple physical issues become nearly invisible.

That last story? That's what plastic surgery is for: facial reconstruction after major surgery for quality of life. Insurance will usually cover it because this isn't about being dissatisfied with how you look. It likely would be considered a medically necessary surgery because being without part of your jaw makes it hard to eat. After he finishes healing from this surgery, facial reconstruction is probably the next step. Either way, don't smoke. Honestly, I'm amazed his kid doesn't have asthma - you don't have to be around a smoker while they are smoking to be negatively impacted. Even third hand smoke - the smoke that lingers on clothes, hair, furniture, walls, etc. - can be medically devastating to those with less than great immune systems, i.e., small children.

"Where this approach is not possible, implants and prosthetic devices can help restore more natural-looking contours and features." This is not new stuff - they've been doing this for years.
